Is this level idea too boring for anyone to want to play?

I can't seem to get inspired to finish proper platforming levels and I'm working on something that satisfies my own creative urges but I'm not sure whether anyone will actually be that interested in playing it. The idea is that you're in a museum where there is a history of transportation exhibition and you go through from area to area, where there are fairly accurate and detailed replicas of important historical vehicles, which you control and have to complete a pretty basic task with in order to move on to the next area. I've also included some rather dry information about each one, like who designed it, when it was made, and a few technical specifications. There will be three areas: Steam Locomotives, Flying Machines and Automobiles, with three exhibits in each category. Does this sound dreadfully dull? | 2010-02-01 11:33:00 Author: SalieriAAX Posts: 421 |
It all depends on execution, salieri. The idea sounds interesting to me, going through a museum unlocking the way by using items stored there. Sounds to me like there should be a reason he is in the museum in the first place though, trying to steal an item or something. | 2010-02-01 11:40:00 Author: Zwollie Posts: 2173 |
Sounds to me like there should be a reason he is in the museum in the first place though, trying to steal an item or something. The reason for being there is the same as the vast majority of people who go to a museum - to see cool stuff and *gasp* maybe learn something. Maybe that is too boring... | 2010-02-01 12:07:00 Author: SalieriAAX Posts: 421 |
I don't think you need to be stealing anything, education could work. Just make sure the education happens in a fun way, it's a game after all. | 2010-02-01 13:46:00 Author: Rogar Posts: 2284 |

I like the idea a lot. You'll need to be careful so that it doesn't come across as a "look what I can make" kind of experience. I like your idea of using the exhibits to grant access further through the level. Alternately, you could take a theme park kind of approach where the exhibits are optional and entertaining each on their own. Adding score bubbles throughout will encourage exploration. | 2010-02-01 18:16:00 Author: Taffey Posts: 3187 |
You could also try to add some humour wherever you can or maybe you can make the player have to "accidentally" break everything in the museum to move on or something. | 2010-02-10 18:40:00 Author: Unknown User |
Thanks for the responses. I got to the end of the railway segment and ended up starting out on a completely different level that I'm actually properly committed to and WILL FINISH (honest). In the meantime I might just put all of these vehicles in one of those levels where you try out the vehicles that other people have made with no pretense of a level around it. | 2010-02-11 09:51:00 Author: SalieriAAX Posts: 421 |
