Spinning acrobat poles

I was playing "Lara Cloth: Tomb Raider-Helgardh" by Kiminski and I thought the poles that you spin from were awesome, so I set about making my own and trying to improve them. I thought it would be cool to be able to swing either direction from them (Kiminski's all spin counter-clockwise) so I rigged up some goofy logic and now sackboy has to grab it and swing in the direction he wants to spin.

The problem is that you have to REALLY swing to get it going: like your whole body has to move to the side to trip the sensor switch and they're as close as I can get them. The ideal solution would be to have the pole hang loosely so you could spin it with your weight and then have it take off once you trigger it, but there's no way to make a motor bolt tighten mid game.

Any ideas on making it more precise? If you want to see what I've got so far, it's published in a copyable tech demo.
