I still have half the thermo, but...

Archive: 16 posts

I have no idea what else to add! I have to make a sorta caverny deal, and more underwater challenges, but I can't think of anything...and I'll still prolly have 40% thermo left...

seriously, what else can I cram in there?

In The Crate Escape, I still had half the thermo left after implementing every room and puzzle. I used the rest of the Thermo to add as much detail as possible. If you want, you can invite me this afternoon and I'll see if I can help you add some more detail and/or any more Puzzles or platforming sections.

It's perfectly fine to not use all of the thermo. 2010-01-31 11:08:00

I find myself getting frustrated if I got too much thermo left when my level is done. The solution is to simply turn it off! 2010-01-31 11:50:00

I would love that, except in the afternoon I'll be busy on scholarship stuff. After that, sure...but that'll be in the evening.

I haven't thought of any true puzzles yet, except for having to retrieve this one object...and that's a simple magnetic key switch deal. I'm thinkin there will probably be some underwater platforming (sorta like that one level in pirates dlc where the sides slowly came in to crush you. the only challenge is that it has to be able to be done in less than 30 seconds, since there's no scuba gear and no bubble machines.

tricky, eh?

This happened to me with Puzzle World. It's finished now but still has just less than a 1/4 of the thermo left. Play other levels, that what I did.2010-01-31 17:35:00

"Remember, it's not a race to the top. You don't need to fill the Thermometer to make a good level, and in many cases, if your level is overheating, it may actually be worth splitting it into two levels." -John, Media Molecule2010-01-31 23:42:00

I suggest adding some sort of mini game at the end, so that the player won't go to the scoreboard for a while. =P You know, like a duel with cannons...2010-02-01 16:51:00

Fire millions of bombs at the player just as they get to the end! lol joke. Like someone else said if you play other levels you can get ideas from there, it works!2010-02-01 17:51:00

Easy ways to fill the thermo:

- use more types of materials
- make your shapes more complex (more corners)
- use more story objects
- having more moving parts and/or enemies with creature brains
- make your level larger

I usually have the opposite problem and run out of room

Why do you want to fill up the thermo? It's good if it isn't full it means you can add more later when more features are announced and you have more ideas!

As Syroc said above, you do not need to have filled up the thermo to publish a level

I know...and I mean, I'm at about 25-30% now...but it feels empty, still...because I haven't introduced some of the challenges, or the characters, or anything...but I mean, I figured using so much of the background layers would cost a lot more. are background layers not counted in the thermo or something?2010-02-01 22:18:00

I find that emitters can use up a large amount of the bar, also the 3D glitch, that definitely tops it right up!
As "Thegide" said, making shapes more complicated helps, making the edges more ragged etc

You shouldn’t just make the level unnecessary complex to fill up the thermometer… if your happy with the level and the thermo’s low thats a good thing, because then it’ll load faster and will most probably lag less.

But if you want to fill it up more, just make the level prettier… try using different materials, complex shapes and adding little details like cracks, holes and that sort of thing.
Or even add logic to make sequences look a lot smoother and how you want them to.

Theres way too many things that you could do that I possibly couldn’t list em… but, you should have naturally done them all in the first place if you want to create a good level though.

A low thermometer shouldn’t be a problem… a high one should.
