Brain Chain 2: Industrial Bounce **Spotlighted**

Brain Chain 2: Industrial Bouncecomphermc
Bounce on brains and avoid the fire to collect points and survive. This level is for one player only.
Hey all. I finally did it! I finished the sequel to Brain Chain Mini-Game that's been sitting on my moon for months! Whew. I had a real blast making this one. The concept is simple, but the challenge is intense. Do you have what it takes to post a top score? Player beware... it's addicting!

A little creator note: I've done something that I haven't seen before... I have a train that zips by periodically, and it would be a real drag if the player just plane-shifted onto that instead of dying... The solution: put the train in the front glitch layer. With a bit of trickery, it's possible. You have to ensure that your wheels are attached via the front thin normal layer. I was pretty geeked when it worked.

Screenies:

Also, I'm open to suggestions for making it better. I'm pretty happy with the mechanics, but if you can figure out some additional obstacle that would work well, I'm all ears. I'm sure I'll be tweaking the visuals all week (dang sticker glitch), so I'll be in the level anyways.

One word: addictive!

Man, it is REALLY hard to put this one down once you start. And I love the different strategies and decisions... it's quite a bit deeper than it first appears. I found myself trying to decide whether I REALLY wanted to go after the paintinator, or treat it as a distraction.

I'm impressed! 5 stars and a heart.

Thanks, Cubb. I was hoping this one would be a bit harder than the last one (no more 1M scores), but shadowheaven is already off to a great start. He has around 150,000 or something. This one is much more random that the last, so we'll see how it plays out. Is there anything you can think of to make it better. I was working on it all day and reached a point where I didn't know what to do next. So I published it. Lol.

Thanks for playing!

You already noticed that I ran on the ps3 to play this, huh? I couldn't wait for this level.
It's Harder, deadlier, funnier and even more addicting than your first one - This level shows how much you've improved; the industrial facility is very good looking, and the train idea is great, other than well-executed. The paintinator and the moving switch make this challenge very exciting, to the point that i started envying the chameleons for their eyes - a precise aim can earn you a lot of points, and the shortage of ammo prevents paint spamming

Overall 5 stars and a heart - republish often, this can stay on cool pages 1 for this whole week. About suggestions to make it better, I have none for now (It's 2 AM now, I can stomp brains, but don't expect mine to work well)

I scored 200k+ points for now; tomorrow I'll go for 500k

NOOOOOOOOOOOO! You're the only one standing between me and first place ;-;

... Stats say I just played this 51 times in succession. Which would appear to be a 6th of your total plays unless that stat lags, I'm not sure.

I see you added a paintinator to make things more chaotic... I really wanna see what happens when you get the paint switch down all the way ;-;

Yeah... Awesome. :kz:

Hm... nice idea, Rock. I hadn't considered rewarding the player for quick shots in succession. Currently, they just stack (within reason), so that if you shoot it twice, you get twice the bubbles. The problem is that the switch can receive paint faster than it can send an output.2010-01-31 01:33:00

You're ridiculous comph. You've made or contributed in making around five spotlight-worthy levels in the last month.

My only complaint is that you don't really get a lot of warning from the furnaces...

Excellent Level comphermc - very subtle, yet genius tech going on in this little beauty too. Too bad most players won't notice. I'll be back but don't expect me on the high score board anytime soon

Wait, wuh? I had an idea? O-o I just wanted to know what happens when the paint thing on the right does down... glad I somehow helped though...? :O

The paint-switch on the right moves up and down on its own. It just does that to be a harder target to hit. You gave me the idea of rewarding the player for shooting it multiple times in succession - I don't know what the reward would be...

[...] My only complaint is that you don't really get a lot of warning from the furnaces...

Do you mean the start of the them all, or each individual one? I'm thinking of putting some flashy lights in when they start, but I didn't want to completely overload the sense, lol.

Ah, but the beauty of it is that they shouldn't notice it! It's just something that I can smile about on my own... You're always welcome back for more...

Played this a couple of times today. Highest Score was a little over 90k. Perhaps hitting the paintswitch multiple times could deactivate the flamethrowers for a set time. This'll add more of an incentive to actually go after that paintinator.

Just a thought

I loved it of course. Really fun addition with the paintinator, but maybe it would be a good idea to give more incentive to use it... More bubbles for longer time, or stopping hazards briefly. For now I'm avoiding it, I found myself dying again and again with the paintinator, then decided to not use it at all and scored 300K. It's a great idea though, I just can't focus on the bouncing as good when I'm also trying to get the paint bonuses.

I suppose that's the point, risk/reward. I'll keep practicing

Thanks guys! I have taken your suggestions and modified the paint switch payout a little. It's mostly the same, but now they emit faster (this means more overall points for it). I'm sure you top-scorers won't mind.

I've also tweaked the visuals across the board. The area under the stairs for the tutorial is now a junkyard. It was kinda fun slicing my trains to pieces! Also, the scoreboard has been updated visually, and I've added in a little easter-egg (Hint: trying playing with two players and going where a single player could not). There are actually two easter-eggs right next to each other...

Thanks again.

Do you care if we can escape the level? If you grab the layer behind you at the start you can fall down to the floor. I saw a train to the left and some small stuff. Nothing to exploit though. I just got fifth place but that probably won't last long. It's more fun than the first because it's more convenient to restart and of course it looks a lot better.2010-01-31 20:54:00

Lol, that'd be tough. I am at just under 3/4 thermo with this one. (I added a bunch of details that shot it up some more)

I fixed the problems of falling to the bottom of the level. I hope. Was it just right at the start?

Great minigame Comp. Replay value is "out the roof" (said as I recall seeing "57" notices that RockSauron has achieved a score of X on Brain Chain 2). Please stop it Rock, I beg of you.

Very detailed stage design, dramatic lighting, and annoying distractions (the train...the train). Although our score did not reflect how much we enjoyed this level, Lady and I did manage to get high on the scoreboard in 2-player mode. And don't let her 1-player score fool you (there was some RickRock in there).

I believe it is fitting to dub you "Minigame Master". And I was thinking...with your creator skills, you should make the "Bomb Survival" of all "Bomb Survivals"...something so great, so wonderful, so awesome, that all of the would-be "Bomb Survival" creators would bow to one knee, and then throw in the towel. Could you do that for us please...could you...maybe draw it our on paper tomorrow, and have it completed by the end of next week...please.

I see your "stickied" to Cool Pages already, in less than 1 day...looks like this level is destined to "Chain" to page 1. Good Luck!

Awesomely fun level! Pop pop pop pop ! However when I play it I break the chain much too early... I will have to return here in a bit to try and improve my score.

Fantastic design and well decorated. Love the use of the front layer glitch as well. Very cool and adds greatly to the scenery.

Top notch stuff!!

55 stars and a few hearts. ...though it came out as 5 and a heart in game.

Haha, funny you should mention that. I actually have a mechanic down for an actual level, but I may just put it in a survival challenge. It's pretty bomb-survivalish, so I'm hesitant to go through with it. Does "Rocket Survival" count?

Thanks! A tip? Try bouncing a few times in the same column before moving to the next. You should notice it's easier to get the timing right, and it helps keep the combo up.

I noticed that Shadowheaven got dang near 500k points. Ridiculous.

I remember first playing the original Brain Chain and dying within 10 seconds every time, like Comp said, bounce in the same column at least 3-4 times then switch to another. I just assumed I should change columns every bounce when I first tried, but it's impossible to do good doing that.2010-02-01 05:48:00

Well, one of my top 3 survival challenges got a lot better. I still stink at it, but it does'nt stop me trying. I have enough problems staying on the brains without attempting to use the paintinator to. I need more practice, and will definetly get it, seeing how addictive it is.

I loved the visual style to, it looks fantastic, and is dripping with detail and little touches. Sorry for the brief feedback, I'm half asleep after work and my head is even more empty than usual

Thanks, guys, but quit playing it so much!! When I checked last night it had like 2300 plays and 38 hearts. What a terrible ratio!!

Just kidding. I'm glad you are enjoying it. I'm thinking of adding in a hint bubble telling you to bounce in the same column multiple times before moving on. Thoughts? (it would be added to the tutorial area)

Edit: better idea... if you die too quickly a mouth plays at the checkpoint... Genius!

Good idea with the tutorial. For some reason your first instinct is to bounce around all over the place. If you ever make a third you could try actually visualizing the basic strategy. Like show a little cutout sackboy bouncing in the same column, then switching, rinse repeat. It could be done.

And with the upgrade added to the paintinator bonus, it's definitely worth it now.

You aren't trying to jump off them, right? You should only need your left joystick to survive. I assure you that you can get around 10 bounces in the same row before dying.

No. I tried not pressing anything once I got a bounce going so it would stay in one spot and after after around 3 bounces he ended up hitting the floor before the next brain went up. Still fun tho

Sorry you are still struggling. I wish I had a way of capturing video so I could demonstrate how it's done. Perhaps tonight I'll try to record something with my digital camera (if I can find it). Thanks for trying though... I know it's hard. The last one had too many 1,000,000 scores, so I tried to make it harder. I'm not sure I accomplished that, but it looks prettier...

Edit: well, that was easy enough. Sorry for the quality, lol:

Okay I had another go (actually who am i kidding I think I had another 30+ goes) and did a bit better. I managed to stay alive long enough for the thing to start spitting fire at me and even shot that target a few times for the score bubbles but once again I bounced, hit the ceiling and fell straight down and hit the floor before a brain appeared.

What you may find strange is that I actually live longer on this game if I keep moving around instead of bouncing on the same column.

Ah, does this only happen when the fire starts to go? The brains under a fire-thingy actually stop emitting when it comes down. This is done on purpose, so the brains and fire don't bounce off of each other. They should start up immediately once the fire stops shooting.

I hope it's not something else that is the issue.

well that time it may have been because of the fire but there was times when there was no fire as I never made it that far before I fell faster than the brains rose

You could use dissolve for the emitted brains, and put keys on the emitted fire, so that the brains disappear when they're about to collide with the fire - this way you don't need to disable the emitters and the chance of dying because of an un-emitted brain lowers.2010-02-02 21:56:00

But how would I dissolve the brains? Do you suggest I just kill them? I don't like that... there would be a high score exploit then.

I don't know if anyone has noticed, but you can go for a ride on the paint-switch. I thought it was funny, and there's not really an advantage to it, so I left it in there.

I noticed that on the first play, and in fact I took a photo off screen (widest zoom on the highest point of the screen) to see the DM and the piston over the flame launchers
Also, the dissolve idea was a bad idea, since you could stay on the moving target on the right for a long time to slowly achieve an high score. also, nice idea putting a video tutorial on yt.

Sequel coming??

Haha, I'm not so sure. This was the sequel! I don't have any ideas that I'd use in a new one... the only difference would be the location/visuals. Sadly, the Cool Pages response has made me not want to do another Very Difficult level. I already have a project that is 80% finished that will be set aside to work on something that I just started yesterday. This one, if I predict correctly, will take a very long time.

maybe a wider playing field? or a higher one? or even a map to traverse while trying to maintain the combo? too much for the thermo??

Sadly, the Cool Pages response has made me not want to do another Very Difficult level.

cool pages should never be a measure of success for you guys. 80-90% of the cool page levels are terrible...i think most of the regular lbp players would know how to find the really cool levels...(ie - here, others hearted pages etc.).
you know most famous artists aren't(weren't) famous while they are alive....not saying you have to die before your levels get recognised, but you know what I mean.

CAN'T WAIT

Seriously this level is like computer-game-crack for me. It's the 'Pacman' of LBP.
Congratulations!

Great follow up to my favorite minigame! Love the added visuals & extra content. 5 stars & a heart. I'm surprised my score was in the 30th rank or so, with 8000+ plays ! I thought I was doing terrible, haha.. Will definately be back for more.2010-02-06 07:42:00

I can see why this didn't do as well as the other one, it is incredibly hard, even though it is 50 times more beautiful it is rock solid. Yet i absolutely love it.2010-02-06 09:07:00

Looks like this level doesn't have the same strange behavior of the first episode; when I died with 16k points and a x100 multiplier on, the score went down to 950.000 - now I'm waiting for a copy of this level 2010-02-17 18:38:00

But... but... I'll give you some hints: keep pressing right since before entering the level, so that you will bounce on the first, second and sixth column, then slow down and bounce from the last to the first one, finding yourself in the best position for when the paintinator pops up - you can't get an higher multiplier at this point; the other hint is to aim the paintinator at about 15 degrees upward, and never touch the right analog stick again during the rest of the game - also, the fastest way to collect the bubbles triggered by the paint switch is to bounce from one brain to another, to the point that you would normally pass through the smoke of a just demitted brain and break the combo, but it will be saved thanks to the bubbles - you will collect a lot of them while falling on a lower brain; don't have fear to shoot through the fire (it will get through 80% of the time), and shoot only when you're sure to hit, one paint shot per try (you can't activate the paint switch more than once in about 1 and a half second); lastly, if sometimes the level becomes laggy, delete the moving decorations that are in front of the game zone.

Just to let you know, I played it over 500 times and am still playing it.

Another tip: if you're *really* good, you can "skim" a bubble column and collect the entire thing just about but it's incredibly hard.2010-02-18 02:00:00

Sadly, I've played over 600 times, I can get as far as a 60x combo but after that there's just too many flames!!! aaargh the flames!!!!!
You sir, are a freak.
You are the Steve Wiebe of this level!

question - how are you deleting the decorations while your 'combo-ing'? Or are you resting on the 'target area' in-between combo attempts?

I tried this method too, but you need a perfect eye or an oversized screen to do it efficiently - can be good to do it for the first section of the game, when the flamethrowers don't get too crazy.

lol, thanks - I delete them before starting to bounce on the brains, it would be too hard to do after; I noticed that after 4-5 plays without decorations you can play for a while without the risk of slowdown. For the flames, it's partly a matter of luck, expecially when you are cornered - Don't feel forced to use the paint switch when you're having a hard time; I did from 85x to 93x without the paintinator (that's about 40 brains)

Edit: better idea... if you die too quickly a mouth plays at the checkpoint... Genius!

I must be terrible, because I read that tip every time I died hahaha

Wow, just wow. You have this down to an absolute science. I tip my hat to you. And, as promised, you will be receiving a copyable version of the level for "beating it." I don't know what you'll do with it, but hey!

Over 900,000? That just boggles the mind. Boggles it. I had a pretty good run (for me anyway) a few days ago, but I'm still number 11. I just barely missed the leaderboards! So close! So close to eternal glory...2010-03-28 22:19:00
