Jaeyden
The Laidback Trailblazer
Interview conducted by MrsSpookyBuz (http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/member.php?u=3896)

Whether you're looking for levels that offer brilliant bubble chasing, free-roaming fun, or levels of immense and incredible story-telling, Jaeyden fits the bill perfectly. In fact, he's one of the most highly-rated creators on LBP, and with very good reason. Those who've already experienced his creations will know what I mean, but if you need any more convincing, this interview is a must-read...

Stand by for Jaeyden's "Tye Dye" - brilliant fun and highly addictive.

The Low-Down

What video games did you enjoy playing before LBP was released?
Oh boy, I've been gaming for 30 years now so that list would be quite long. This generation though, I spent a ton of time playing Resistance and Warhawk before LBP. I loved Heavenly Sword, Ratchet & Clank and the Uncharted series is absolutely spectacular.

What was the first full level you ever built? And what was it like?
My first level was called Starstruck. I made it in the original beta and it was a lot of fun to make. It's rather aged but still holds a little bit of charm. You can really see that I was just trying to figure out the basics of how to use the tool set and how some of the objects can be used for game play. I am quite proud of one aspect of the level though. The falling lights in that level are remnants of the beta phase. There was no adjustable lighting available. I stumbled upon the candle hidden in the Wedding template and after playing with it for a while figured out I could adjust and detach the flame. I stuck it to some nice little Styrofoam stars and went to work with emitters. I looked at the stats paged the other day and had little ?LOL? when I realized it was published in 2008!

What levels have you published to date?
Starstruck!
Icebound! (Archived)
Invasion! (Archived)
The Jade Fortress!
Grinder!
Starstruck 2!
Ninja! (Archived)
Abyss!
Starstruck 3!
Little Big Contra: Stage 7 Hangar
Tye Dye!
Flutterby!
Stardust!
Submarine Sabotage (With Wexfordian and Fullgorr)
Sandstorm! (PSP)

Which of these is your own favourite? And why?
I gotta say Tye Dye! I wanted simple and fun and that?s what I got. I started working on it when we had a good idea that the global lighting switch was going to become reality. I pretty much had it finished a month before I published because I was waiting to integrate the switch to finish the level. Consequently, I had a lot of time to play and replay the bubble combos. It was a blast trying to beat my own high scores during that time but what made it even better was the competition that ensued after release. These guys blew me away. TommyTheThird has the high score on that level and I couldn?t even come close to it and I've played that level more than a hundred times.

Are there any other creators who inspire you?
Nope!

Lol, just kidding! This game is ALL about inspiration. There are so many talented creators out there that have pushed the LBP envelope. I?m proud to say that many of them are my friends but just as many aren?t. I?m going to list a whole lot so I hope there?s enough room here. Centurion24, Fulen, NinjaMicWZ, ZX497, Morgana25, CuzFeeshe, DrunkenFist_Lee, julesyjules, CandyK, gevurah22, OCK, mrsupercomputer, GruntosUK, MrsSpookyBuz, Wyth, EMDUBB, mother-misty, Wexfordian, xkappax, Teebonesy, Leonidas2123, jackofcourse, comphermc, Tabulator_AT, Nattura, natuneko4, Qugz, mdaj, and truly many more.

What?s the worst thing that?s happened while creating?
I would say that over the last year or so I've probably lost 40-50 hours of work due to some of the old bugs that are now thankfully gone. It's not all bad though. It seems every time I've run into a setback it just forces me to rebuild what I've lost and it always turns out better. In Contra I built these big exploding walls with spikes on them. They were a ton of work trying to get the explosions to pop just right, while also destroying the brain attached so the spikes and left over material would disappear. Nearing the end of the project they just stopped working and I panicked for two days trying to find out what the heck was going on. I tried everything and was just about to throw in the towel and start over when by luck I stumbled across the solution. I had to change all my piston settings from .03 to .02. I?m still not sure why it happened but I can tell you how relieved I was to solve that one.

Hmm, that sounds suspiciously like the 160-hour bug. Comments anyone?

What?s your pet hate in LBP?
The multiplayer camera for sure. In my opinion the creator should have greater control over who it follows or even whether it only follows one player. It doesn?t follow only one single player in edit mode so you should have that kind of freedom in play mode if you want it. I?d like to make races that are REAL races between players?not just players VS. the clock. I've also found that it can cause real headaches in platforming sequences because it will follow one player while leaving the other with an impossible view of where to jump or a skewed angle that makes the jumping even more difficult. I've seen too many creators have to pre-empt their level description with ?One player only? warnings because the camera makes certain parts of the level impossible with multiple players.

If you worked for Media Molecule, what tool/object/material would you have liked to see developed?
I would certainly try to add an organizer to the line up. We?ve got way too many stickers and objects now in our pop-its. We should be able to organize them how we?d like. I would really try to expedite the sticker cut-out tool that was often talked about. I?d add a transparent sticker option and a better tool for importing pictures. I would change the default of pistons and rods to stiff. I?d love to see a gravity boots power up, a melee weapon, some speed boots, a timed invincibility or some sort of shield power up. I definitely think it's time to follow suit of the PSP version and just give the option to make a material static or mobile instead of having to deal with dark matter everywhere. I?d add more materials with the floaty properties, a bunch more metal textures and change the weight property of glass when it's in water. Maybe I?m wrong, but I don't think glass floats.

Stars, stripes and a whole lotta bubbles! It's Stardust! And it's incredible!

Digging Deeper

You're an outstandingly skilled creator - did this ability come pretty naturally, or did you once struggle like the rest of us?
I?m still struggling with aspects of creation. We all have strengths and weaknesses. I feel like I've really been able to put my best effort forward when it comes to effects and artistic vision but I?m hardly ever satisfied when it comes to the game play elements in my levels. Maybe it's just that I see my own stuff differently but that?s how I feel most of the time.

Some of your levels, such as Tye Dye!, are open, free-roaming levels where players can go more or less where they want to. How difficult were these levels to plan?
You?re gonna laugh. I haven?t really planned any of my levels yet. Well, Contra had a bit of planning to it but everything else starts out with one idea and just free flows from there. To me, building levels is like painting a picture. You find some inspiration, usually a theme of some sort, a song you really like or a player that you really care for and just start creating. LBP is a very personal experience for me because it allows me to express my creative energy in a way that I've always wanted to. I really wanted to be in the games industry my entire life, but we gotta play with the hands we?re dealt and sometimes life deals us funny cards. So for now, I just live out my dream building stuff here.

I've promised so many people that I would ask a question about your Abyss! level, so here we go - do you remember the time when you were building it? Did you get the feeling it would turn out as utterly spectacular as it did?
Well it's been over a year now since I published that level. I certainly remember all the time that went into it? and it was a lot. I basically built the level and thought I was about 100% done. I had ?Beethy? (some of you remember his insane reviews) play it with me and he said, ?I think it's about 70% done? and he was right. I ended up tearing most of it down and redoing it. I ran into all sorts of technical issues while building it though. It's funny in hindsight because game changes have made some of the technical stuff I did seem very trivial. That level has invisible pistons, motor bolts and what not all over the place?and that was before you could just turn ?em all off. All in all I was very happy with the way it turned out and the reception from the community was even more gratifying. It certainly taught me a lot.

And what about the sequel? A few may have played the Abyss 2!, but it seems to have been left at beta status - is it complete as far as you're concerned, or have other projects pushed it to the back seat?
Ah? the sequel. I WILL do one. I have a rough draft of how I thought the sequel might be but many things kept me from really doing anything with it. I wasn?t happy with what I had done so far. I got caught up in the co-op beta and then decided I didn?t want to even keep working on it until after water came out. Now I?m feeling like what I had built before is a little too old for my own tastes and so it's back to rebuilding. I feel like I may have let some people down by keeping part 2 hanging for so long but I want it to be really good and it won?t be published until it is.

Much of your stuff is pioneering and trailblazing. Do you strive for innovation, or is fun still the driving force?
Both. Innovation seems to come pretty easily and I always feel like I've got enough tricks up my sleeve to give people some ?Wow Factor? when it comes to visuals and art. Fun, on the other hand, is an elusive character and I really hope that I can find it and deliver it every time I make a level. I know I have fun playing and creating with all you guys and that?s a driving force in and of itself.

With so many projects ongoing for you, both on PS3 and PSP versions of LBP, can you give us a taster of what we can expect from you in the future?
I've got a bunch of unfinished stuff on my moon. I really hope I can get to wrapping ?em up here soon. I have a score/platformer that?s about half done. I have a new story level that?s finished but needs some tweaking and a project that NinjaMicWz and I did in the co-op beta that I want to put some finishing touches on. I've been talking with milton_TPS, mother-misty and MrsSpookyBuz about doing a themed platformer series and we?re tossing around ideas right now. I've also entered the HASTAC competition and who knows where that could end up.

And finally, is there anyone, anyone at all, who is more laid back than you when playing online?!!
No

Ha ha ha! I don't doubt it!

Every fish tells a story - from Jaeyden's incomparable level, "Abyss!"

Our Conclusions

I sometimes find it difficult to summarise the creators in these Spotlights. All of them are unique, talented and genuinely modest. Jaeyden is even more difficult to sum up for me, as it was him who inspired me to create (sorry everyone, but now you know who to blame!). It was early December 2008 - before I even knew Jaey - when I stumbled across his masterpiece, Abyss! I can still vividly remember it - honestly, I was stunned, and all I could do while playing it was shake my head in disbelief. Bear in mind, at the time of its release, there was no water, no global light and no DLC. It was, and still is, an astounding level - and one that I will play again and again. But Jaeyden didn't stop there. He continued to produce level after marvellous level - always fun, always cutting-edge, and always trailblazing. I want to thank him for his wonderful levels. And I want to thank him for inspiring me to create. Where LBP is concerned, Jaeyden, I owe you so much.

A laundry list of great 5 star levels, congrats!

(from ask-a-word or dictionary.com) one of those webby-places
bi-monthly;
The term is often confused to mean an occurrence which occurs two times every month, though this is properly referred to as "semi-monthly". The prefix bi means "two".

OMGosh - Are we still squabbling over grammatical semantics? It's just fine as it is. Even if you get it every eleventh, odd-numbered day, you'll still get it when Cartman sees fit to publish it.

Focus people - this is about our friend Jaeyden!

Awesome awesome awesome awesome!!!

All I can say is, Jaeyden is tops - and one of the few creators who can pull off every skill at once - visuals, special effects, fun and unique gameplay.... an all around artist. I still remember the day Abyss! was released.... I was at work and saw the screen shots - I was absolutely stunned! And still am. Between Abyss!, Starstruck 3, Grinder, and Tye Dye I may be the biggest fan!

Because bimonthly is still perfectly accurate.
Bimonthly is every other month.... Semi-monthly is twice a month, and biweekly is every other week.

I think this is actually biweekly.

So.... bi-monthly is also semi-monthly and biweekly... and biweekly is semi-weekly AND every other week at the same time....

That's it. I'm switching to another language. English makes no sense whatsoever.

However, this works well for MrsSpookyBuz - if she gets tired she can skip a month and a half and we won't have to change the schedule.

Congrats Jaeyden! You are on one huge roll this year!

Seriously this was a great and fun read. Been a huge fan of Jaeyden for quite some time and so glad we have a great interview to honor him!

Thanks MrsSpookyBuz, you are so awesome with these interviews! Thanks so much for doing them as it is great fun seeing the perspectives on LBP of all these wonderful creators.

Awesome, congrats on the spotlight, Jaeyden - unbelievably well-deserved. Great interview as well from the always-charming and sharp honorable Mrs Buz. Jae's definitely one of my favorite creators. What's he doing on spotlight 200 or whatever we're on now? What took so long, jeez.

So that's going to be my catch-phrase for every creator spotlight from now on. "What took so long, jeez." Nothing to do with the spotlight being "bimonthly", more to do with the sheer magnitude of great creators we have.

Jaeyden is the man, and a great friend of mine... one of the few creators that always made think "why didn't I think of that?" and his style is just so free and uninhibited. I would almost get frustrated working with him in cocreate, because I was so anal about thermometer, jagged edges, points, and whatnot, but Jaeyden is like a free spirit and somehow just makes these masterpieces without so much worry or concern - no anxiety to it, or impending sense of doom that space is going to run out, and if it does, oh well, it can work. I remember when Abyss first came out, I had just recently made my ship in False Idols 0 with the paintball rain (that killed my therm) and I was really proud of how crafted and nuanced the ship was, and how stormy it felt... then I played Abyss and saw the Krakken, and the boat just rising up in the tide of a truly torrential storm, with pieces rolling around and this rolling gas that really looked and behaved like water... man, it made me go "wtf, how can I get my ship to do this?" lol

If you ever get the chance, watch Jaeyden create a new visual effect. We were in the beta once, and working with rapidly spinning objects, and he would slather them with stickers, lights, change the settings like a madman and just create looks that were totally unreal and unlike anything else in LBP... without even really trying.

...and I know what he means about pre-patch invisible pistons and winchs... we'd both go on about how amazing Simplexity was all the time, and I remember having to do all that myself.

"The Laidback Trailblazer" - What an awesomely fitting and appropriate title for Jaey! Jaey is definitely one of the most brilliant creators I've had the honor and pleasure of meeting. He can take an absolutely unimpressive thing and turn it into something made of pure awesomeness. He has such a wickedly sharp mind and eye for creating and his intellectual curiosity always blows me away. But, as those who have been lucky enough to meet him know, he is so laidback and fun to play around with, and he is so generous with his time. If we counted all the time he spends on helping other people with their creations, he probably would have 50 levels published by now! Anyway, Jaey, you know I am a huge fan, and how much I admire you, so I will wax on no more on your awesomeness, but congratulations on the spotlight, it's one I've been waiting for a long time!

Thank you again MrsSpookyBuz, I love how you are able to really bring out the essence of these creators in your interviews. Excellent work and a ton of thanks for all of the time and care you put into these.

What’s your pet hate in LBP?
The multiplayer camera for sure. In my opinion the creator should have greater control over who it follows or even whether it only follows one player. It doesn’t follow only one single player in edit mode so you should have that kind of freedom in play mode if you want it. I’d like to make races that are REAL races between players…not just players VS. the clock. I’ve also found that it can cause real headaches in platforming sequences because it will follow one player while leaving the other with an impossible view of where to jump or a skewed angle that makes the jumping even more difficult. I’ve seen too many creators have to pre-empt their level description with “One player only” warnings because the camera makes certain parts of the level impossible with multiple players.

I agree it sucks,
But with any level editor for any game.. we are the ones that have to adapt the way we work.. not the editor (obviously there are limits etc).
It is so easily possible to make 2p vs challenges/levels without much hassle of the camera.
it just takes practice and some efford.

nontheless awesome spotlight!
I am sure to play dye tye!

It seems we are always seeing the same names on this site, mogana25, mrsspookybuz, Wexfordian, NinjaMicWZ etc they aint bad at making levels but I feel this site is just a popularity contest between a few main people boosting each other its getting boring, I have played levels from the members of LBPC that were the best I ever played! But because they don't network well on LBPC they don't get any credit, I never see their names pop up and they have little plays. Its getting boring

I shout you out all the time whenever I end up talking about some of my favorite levels or underrated creators, even though you don't post much - same with Shris. You're one of my favorite creators and influential to me, but alot of people think I have weird taste sometimes. I would personally love to see an interview with sighwhatever, but he barely played LBP other than coming back to make episode 3, and probably wouldn't even be available. Voltiare would be cool if he still played, Teebonsey would be cool because I'd just like to know more about him, and same for IceMaiden 'cause she's so mysterious heh... but so would people like MrGenjii, CaptainCowBoyHat, phife24, deboerdave, centurion, JonMartin, vanemiera, miglioshin etc

jump_button, jackofcourse or steve big guns are the one everyone's waiting for. mmamet box and candyk would be great. I think they just try to pick people they think people will be interested in, and it seems like alot of the newer members haven't heard of alot of the names you and I know -

I can't recall playing any of Jaeyden levels, exept for the submarine sabotage, but I will play some as soon as I sit down in front of my PS3 to play some LBP.

...but yeah, the more new names the merrier.

Nobody mentions me unless they know me... gevurah mentioned me in his spotlight as influential I think because I discovered capturing paintballs and a bunch of uses for it (weaponization, switch manipulation, rain/water etc), and it helped him with what he was doing with armor boy early on and probably 'cause I worked with him indirectly on Contra, and directed him to my layer glitch tutorial for the comiccon level I didn't even know he was working on.

Gruntos mentioned me 'cause we've been down for each other since way back... before we really knew each other I was a big fan of the Siberia series, and he liked some of my stuff, and we'd throw feedback at each other like always. Then in the cocreate beta, we spent probably a few hundred hours together making levels, experimenting and just really delving into what LBP is and what makes good levels.

wex mentioned me, and said why... 'cause I would make bizarre metaphysical poetry levels with no real goal even if I thought nobody would get it or even like it.

Jaeyden mentioned me, 'cause we played the crap out of the game together and spent hours upon hours discussing new ideas, and worked like crazy together on Contra, and discovering all the tricks of bakscratch's layers together in cocreate. I was always supportive of whatever he was working on.

All these cats influenced me in one way or another too... we've spent over a year hanging out and reciprocating ideas and feedback. Also, I think I was at least a little better than "not bad"

Peace

Well you gotta give them credit....they did do some amazing things.....and other creators are starting to pop up on spotlights......plus remember that a lot of levels do get submitted to the site so think about how much the team has to do...

Its nice to see new creators growing and you cant blame them lol some of these creators have been doing it for a while

Popular creators are good picks for interviews because people know them and will be naturally interested in learning more about them. Still, we're actively trying to maintain variety, and I think we've got a good mix between the well-known and the obscure so far. We're constantly trying our best to ensure we retain that variety I mentioned, but help is absolutely welcomed - if you have anyone in particular in mind that you think deserves a spotlight, send it on over to me or MrsSpookyBuz and we'll take a look at their levels ourselves. We're not promising that we'll fill requests, but we will consider everyone.

Also, keep in mind that there is an immense backlog of interviews that have yet to go up on the site, so just because you haven't seen a particular creator yet doesn't mean we haven't interviewed them.

Man I really love these interviews! It's a shame we only get two a month! Jaeydon's levels always make me feel like I'm in a playground. There are just sooo many things for Sackboy to play with/on and I often find myself running back and forth between them! They are just solid, silly, smile inducing fun! I love it!

While those creators you mentioned are popular (and rightly so), many other, less active, creators have been recognized on this site. For example, the Level Spotlight has featured many levels from rather unknown creators and members of the site. A good level is a good level and the spotlight crew makes an effort to recognize them. You'll see other nonmembers are often mentioned on this site as well, Oil, candyk, etc. I would also point to the previous creator interviews of coyote_blue, Kiminski, and myself as examples of creators interviewed that are not the most active or "popular" on the site.

Great interview, I've been a big fan of Jaeydens levels since the beginning of LBP, 'Grinder' and The Legend That Is 'Tye Dye' are especially immense. Pure mayhem! Great guy and a deserved spotlight, well done Jedi!2010-02-04 22:21:00

While those creators you mentioned are popular

I'm not really popular, I don't think. I'm known around here by alot of the really old members, and respected a little 'cause I blabber alot or have always been supportive of people or tried to come up with new ideas (wether for me or others), and my friends on PSN, but I barely ever got onto page 1 (twice, for half a day), and have never broken the 8k mark on plays. I do alot to try and make myself known lol, but I think I'm "underground" as Ccubbage usually puts it. I'm certainly no jackofcourse, wexfordian, mrspookybuzz, or steve big guns, an MM picked guy like you or jump_button, an all respected visual artist like candyk... I don't think I'm even a comphermc, captaincowboyhat as far as name recognition on the site goes.

Jay-Z once said "i'm your favorite rapper's favorite rapper" ha, I sometimes want to say "I'm your favorite creator's favorite creator" to boost my self esteem.

I've literally just arrived back home from holiday, and this is the first thread I've read. Many congratulations to Jaeyden, and I'm sorry I missed your Spotlight being posted last week, but judging by the comments here, you've been very well looked after!

A few words about these Spotlights...

The original idea I had for doing these was to inspire newer members (or inexperienced creators) to read about how certain creators here on LBPC design and build, and offer a fun insight into their processes. Naturally, the creators chosen may be 'well-known', but if they share their problems and triumphs, hopefully their answers will provide interesting reading. I produce these on my own and forward them to CC for publishing. As far as I know, there are no plans to change this, so timing is quite difficult. I try to have one or two ready so that CC isn't hanging around waiting for them, but I can't do them too far in advance or else they'd be out-of-date by the time they were posted.

As to who is chosen - well, it certainly isn't a popularity contest. I choose LBPC members who's levels I've enjoyed, or who have introduced something interesting or different to LBP, or don't have too much exposure but in my opinion deserve more. I won't be able to please everyone, and there have only been nine spotlights so far so many more creators will get their chance.

As Cartman already stated - anyone is welcome to suggest who they think could possibly be interviewed, though I think in future it may be more appropriate to discuss the Spotlights somewhere other than in an actual Creator Spotlight thread!
