Mars & Biggest and Brightest Full Moon of 2010 Tonight!

Archive: 13 posts

Tonight's full moon will be the biggest and brightest full moon of the year. It offers anyone with clear skies an opportunity to identify easy-to-see features on the moon.

This being the first full moon of 2010, it is also known as the wolf moon, a moniker dating back to Native American culture and the notion that hungry wolves howled at the full moon on cold winter nights. Each month brings another full moon name. As a bonus, Mars will be just to the left of the moon tonight. Look for the reddish, star-like object.

Yup... tried to spot this for myself, but we're under a dark ceiling in Vancouver, a long dark gloom with no end in sight called "winter".

Ah well. Next time, moon!

I saw the moon yesterday, it didn't look any bigger or brighter. It actually looked pretty big today.2010-01-31 05:29:00

lol. Yesterday I saw the moon in clear daylight, with the sun only about 60% away from it across the sky. But it was pretty beautiful. No sign of Mars though...2010-01-31 05:51:00

Actually saw this without knowing it was special. It did look pretty big, and a slightly different color.2010-01-31 16:07:00

I saw it, but didn't remember much.
I was ripping flesh from bones.

I did the same thing! I looked up and said, "That full moon looks bigger and brighter tonight."

Then the next day I heard that it actually was. I was just like... wow

But really, it wasn't too much different than usual....

I took a photograph with my refractor of Mars last week. Probably my best Mars photo yet. The focus and clarity is better than anything else I've done.
