My Masterpiece: "The Legend of Zelda PS3"

Archive: 21 posts

(Pardon the pretentious title)

Anyways, I finished a very polished and (I think) nice level and, although I've done around 20 hours of just playtesting (hellish to find a different bug every time) I would like you to play it and tell me if there are any glitches / difficulty spikes.

I'm quite a veteran creator who had taken a long hiatus until water

-And the most important of all ...

Go try it and tell me if you liked the level !

When I started the level, I saw some vague letters but couldnt make out what it said,
I assume something like Snakeowns presents.. but I am not sure, and my HD screen is calibrated.
The zelda logo itself is nice, but since I am a huge Zelda fan I have to say that almost every zelda level I have played on lbp was nothing more than a giant slap in the face of Zelda.

That said,
I wrote a page and a half on my noteblock about this level because its that long,
Is it good.. is it bad? we'll know later.

The first tree's outside of Links house could use some foreground/background variation because as it is now, it feels kind of static and empty.
Jumped from tree to tree and saw a grabby attached to a piston, this static movement of the piston is in total contrast with the natural feel of a forest, why not use a winch?
Also, make sure you get lifted up a little more, as I kept falling because the lift didnt take me high enough.
After entering the house up there, in the right top you can see a music box.
I also noticed you used cut-scene like speech, but it was to fast.. give the player the time to read it.
Nontheless most speech was written nice and correctly..
I have to state however, Link does not talk and the moment he did my sackboy was no Link anymore.
Your elf char looked nice though, I could recognize him as the annoying elf blocking my pathway.

Looking at your surroundings (especially a few forest parts, it looks like you have seen mine and adiposes forest vid-tutorial),
Good job there, but try to get more flow into the surroundings, the tree's feel too static and the floors are either too flat, or too curvey (by using the circle to place materials) I would suggest to try and use the corner tool as much as u can.
As you can see in my "temple" tutorial, you can make any shape with it and more than often with less complex shapes used!
Because of this "use circle, Press X and move left analog stick around" placement, I sometimes had the feel parts where done by someone without any real experience.

A little further I came across some weird jumping platform.. it had 6 points.. and looked like a weird sidways cross thingy.
I had no clue on what it was, and because of its shape, jumping on them/using them felt unnatural and kind of annoying.
Especially in the next room where there are three of them with deadly water.
I think me and my mate died around 8 times before we where able to grab the grabby.. only to find out this one doest get high enough to really nicely land on save ground.. no instead we fell down and had to endure the annoying platforms again.
I would really suggest to try and improve the jump-pads into something more gameplay pleasing.
the deadly water was also botched, sometimes we could swim all the way to the grabby, other times it killed us instantly.

Hey, the Master sword.. Lets pull it.
Now, that was a nice and pleasing effect, not bad at all!
Kudo's!
And a boss to use this freshly obtained sword.
Hey.. my super uber master sword doesnt work...
That.. kinda totally ruined the sword moment.
Though, dropping rocks on the boss and pulling his head off was very cool.
Also credits for that.
Link... Kratos... hmm.. Klinkos!
I did expect the spider from OoT, but okay.. the funny boss was nice.

The second rocketpack you come across after putting the skull into the alter..
If you fly left/up there you can see some logic,
go even further and you can see the rays of light you added in a part of the forest, even futher.. you can practically get everywhere outside of the level.

You now enter a snowed forest, not badly done! i can see you are improving.
But at the end of it.. there is lava right next to the ice.. and that is quite.. not right.
It doesnt look good, and I suggest to change it.
The ice would be thawning as soon as the lava touches is...

I do think you should put some efford into the legs of epona, Having a paintgun for an imaginary bow is one thing,
but a non moving epona on wheels would not have been a choice I would make.
Even adding + shapes as wheels would have given a better effect as it would make epona wobble.

There are a few rotating platforms in the first sand part that are kind of botched and dont move correctly,
Nontheless the platforming element here was fun.
I would suggest adding a rock material along with the sand to give it a real nice sand cave feel.
*flips page*

The waterpuzzle, I dont know if i have seen it before, It felt familliar but I dont know for sure.
Nontheless it was a nice puzzle, I enjoyed it.
The rolling pins where fun as well!

I liked your idea of the collapsing/quake effect you tried to create,
but because there where not collapsing/quaking parts right next to it..
It kinda felt weird and out of place.
I would suggest for any future versions of this, to let the floor of the room you are in collapse and let sack fall into the quake-room.

Nontheless, the aquafira idea was very nice, and I could see something like this implemented in a zelda game.

Visually the level was not bad, but you can certainly improve on your work visually as well as in the gameplay department.
The speech was nice, but a little fast.. I think I might have missed 25% of it, and I am a decently fast reader.
The lighting overall was a little bland, and I didnt really notice a lot of changes besides the effect in the room/sword.
You should practice using lighting more, its quite easy and fun to do when you are getting the hang of it.

Now, the length.
No problem there, sometimes the changes from one setting to another where kind of weird and abrupt.. but I was not really bothered by it, though try improving your transitions, looking at your level begin to end you allready improved a lot on yourself so this would not be a problem.

Now.. is it zelda worthy.
I am sorry to say but no.
Especially the OoT Zelda was a piece of art, the gameplay was perfect and for its time visually stunning.
If you removed the zelda related speech and came up with another story it would visually not have anything in comon with Zelda besides the sword, shield, epona and the elf and that is imho not enough to carry the Zelda name.
I dont play zelda levels on LBP that often, but If I do.. I kind of expect the same quality.
You should check out Shawneboys temple levels ( http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/search.php?searchid=35611 )
They where based of zelda, and imho the feel really solid.
You might be inspired by them.
Also, Why not create an original story based upon zelda, Without zelda?

As for the shapes of most of your objects,
Learn to see flow.
here is a small example of what I mean with flow:

http://fc09.deviantart.net/fs70/f/2010/030/8/9/flow_example_by_cursed_soul.jpg

Overall, I have to give it a 3.5 stars.
I gave 4 ingame though.
Its a good attempt, you have put some efford into it and there are a few points that had mayor potential.

Cheers,

Luos.

I hope you understand this is advanced critique.
It might sound a little harsh, but I did my best explaining how to improve that what I felt was wrong with the level.

Wow, that was a long and in detail review , impressive :O

Well I'll certainly try to change some of those things. Thanks!

About the Zelda thing, well, I agree no Zelda in LBP would match OoT, cause it's like the best game of all time . I know I could have made it an original theme (it would have been even easier cause of the copyright stuff), but like you I'm a huge Zelda fan so that was the thing that every day motivated me)

But it's really not based in any of the games, as you see the first boss is a Stalfos, you find the M. sword in Lost Woods but you have Navi with you, etc (oh and Link doesn't talk in the level it's only Navi, though maybe it seems Link heheh) and the different environments have to fit in the level.... LBP has it's limitations and ALL horitzontal space is full so you gotta "compress" everything.

Finally, the speech is so fast by popular demand, I had to make it cause you know the random lbp player gets easily bored...even though yea you have to read very fast now.
Yay 4 stars allright (maybe 4.1 if it wasn't named Zelda? lol joking )

PS: What do you mean about "the sword doesn't work".... when it goes dark it's supossed to disappear (brain-connected), did it work??

I think luos forgot to mention the paintinator... It doesn't fit at all :
You could have made a real bow using a shoulder-pad type of build, check this out: https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=21771-Paintenator-type-weapons-Now-has-Photos

Oh! And Epona, it's fine that you use wheels, as it is easier, but you could atleast add some legs that move, cause when the legs are straight down and don't move, it looks so fake.

Yeah once I saw a bow sticked to a paintinator and like "moving in 3D", thought it was an accessory but couldn't find it.... anyways the paintinator is for a change of gameplay, and I think it goes quite well, not challenging but some R1 mashing is welcome

By the way I saw that Luos didn't find lots of global lightning effects... which surprised me cause in every new zone there's a new type of lightning even inside the temple :O. I guess it's good it doesn't get too noticed then heh

PS: Just out of curiosity since here in LBPCentral you guys seem to really like good visuals (I do too though I prefer logic):
What's in your opinion the best looking level ever? In my opinion its Post-Apocalipse, I just fell in love with everything, the visuals are just... magical in a way

I played this level yesterday but quit when I couldn't figure out what to do at the start. I gave it another try today and really liked it. I think I dragged the key down instead of over the bridge. Maybe that should be prevented. I had a bit of a problem with the boss. I couldn't grab the head and place it - if that is what we are supposed to do. But I could move on because the upper jetpack was long enough to reach the next section. Also I could escape the level using this jetpack by going up and left. The highlight for me was the water puzzle. Nice work.

As for best looking level I would say Temple of Magic by Rio_Lotta is one of the best in a natural setting.

I tried it to and loved it but I too had some strange problems, for some Odd reason, the Paintinator wouldn't shoot (don't know why), it wasn't too bad when riding on Epona, but the was the water temple2010-01-30 20:52:00

Oh no the Paintinator not working??? I was sure I had solved that. It happens because the level overheats in Play mode (my thermo is really exploding) and it really sucks... anybody knows a solution other than crushing the level? :S2010-01-30 22:30:00

Most beautiful level?

"The Miracle of life" ( https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=14132-The-Miracle-of-Life )
"Land of crumb" ( https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=18672-The-Land-of-Crumb&highlight=land+crumb & https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=18959-Land-of-Crumb-2&highlight=land+crumb )

And you should really check out the level I will be releasing tonight:

Btw, the sword did not dissapear, I think I kept hitting the boss with it for about 5 minutes lol.
I would also suggest to make the navi speech between stars *hello i am navi*.
I did not deduct points for it being a zelda level, else you would have gotten a point less lol.

Also, I do not agree that the text is ok as it is,
it is too fast.
Look at my levels to get an idea.
Also I think Gek83 or Miglioshi had a level with a working bow.

@ fredrik, I did mention the paintinator.

The forest is very zelda inspired, and looks pretty good. However the temple looks a bit bad and could use some decorating, also it looks more an Indiana jones temple than a zelda one. The sand looks more snow first before the lightning change. And i didn't liked the secret areas thing, but that's just me because I like getting the prizes on my first play.
I really liked the Stalfos, if you want, send it to me, I would like to use it in my next lvl.

F4F my rise of undeath level if you can.

Heheh, the Stalfos is a reward for 100% the level! For the people who like finding secrets, they are actually pretty well hidden. If you use the Secret Area Sticker,at the end of the level there's an extra zone which tells you clues to where the secrets are.

Good luck

Well I made the final update and polished everything I could without the thermo exploding in my face (seriously, I made a corner with the tool and it overheated lol). That's it, thinking on my next level heheh

By the way last time I looked it was on the first page of Cool Levels, WTF???? I don't get it it seems so random

Hey I played this level 2 months ago. It was really like a Zelda level and there's a bunch of various challenges to be astonished with. The skeleton boss is great and the water puzzle is awe-inspiring. I forgot what else is in this level because it has been 2 months since I played this level. Amazing level.2010-04-14 18:06:00

This is truly amazing. Really like playing Zelda. I like the way the boss, was in the start/middle of the level, and how you hid all the items at secret places. I really recommend it for everyone. I'm looking forward on your next level.2010-04-16 15:43:00
