Enter: The Flipper
Archive: 7 posts
With my introduction to LBP:Central, I thought I'd share the first level I ever finished on LBP. LittleBigPinball: Enter the Flipper I put some fresh paint on, though it is a still a little dated. The Logic is way old-school but still functions properly (Hint, it is actually built into the backboard, behind the skin). It is still a blast to Play, however. http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4068/4312578773_d95dddd588.jpg Here'e Flippey, Welcoming you to the board. Don't fret if you are moving too fast to catch it the first time around, he'll wait for you to come back http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4038/4312578885_29fed5f616.jpg High Performance bumpers, guaranteed not to trap any unwary sack-persons. http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2726/4313315438_17be1f7e2d.jpg Check out the middle board with plenty of scoring opportunities and a few secrets to unlock. http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4009/4313315128_aa62eb8126.jpg Your main bumpers and flippers, as well as a back-lit status monitor. This is your last chance to stay in play before you lose a ball/life. Note the working (and resetting) Ball-saves to the left and right -- only once per life though. I hope you all enjoy it! Feedback is welcome, but I do not plan on updating this level shy of a complete remake. | 2010-01-28 22:37:00 Author: Aezuriel Posts: 5 |

Oooh, this looks interesting. I have a special spot in my heart for pinball levels. I will definitely have to check this out. It looks like this table has quite a number of features, something that's usually absent in most pinball levels. I'll post a review later. If you like pinball, you should check out Asteroid! Even though you aren't updating the level, here's my feedback for future reference if you build a sequel. Pros: +I enjoyed your table. It was fun and well decorated, better than most tables I've played in LBP. +Very diverse table mechanics, a big pro!. I like the kickback bumpers. +The water theme fit the table well... I like it when pinball levels have a point to them other than just smacking a ball, or sack, around. (No dirty jokes, guys) Cons: - Mechanically the table needs a wee bit of work. It was very tough to trigger the flippers... they seemed pretty unresponsive (and I understand why this is... I had the same problem once). - The scoring system is inconsistent and depends on you catching your points after you've already "won" them (as far as I'm concerned). Also, a few things seem to activate only once... and hitting these again later on they become essentially disabled. How are you supposed to win more big points? - The upper parts of the table aren't reachable after the initial launch, which was too bad because I liked your froggy up there. | 2010-02-01 17:39:00 Author: Thegide Posts: 1465 |
Thanks for the input Thegide! In some defense I will say that it can be tricky getting back to the upper board. There is a tunnel to the left that will kick you back up there, and you can use the Starfish on the right (once its activated by hitting all the targets AND pulling the suspended ball -- middle right) to throw yourself up -- as well as a suspended wince above the star to pull you up. The hardest part is learning how to kick off the bumpers and land on the platforms up top (adding a bit of platforming to the mix). Flippy himself can activate a bonus section repetitively, allowing you to score big points, even if you've gotten all the other bonus activations. Setting the initial flipper design has always been awkward, especially considering that back when I first built the table some things would stop working properly or break, when I was working on other parts of the board. Mind you, this is back when the GLUE glitch was a major issue. My second Pinball table addressed some of these issues, though I was less satisfied with the overall design, even though it had resetting goals, as you mentioned this level lacking. Without using a ball or camera gimmicks, It was hard to decide how to collect points without having alot of permanent score bubbles emitting, clogging the thermometer, so I decided that scoring and collecting them could be part of the challenge. This is also why I tried to have score bubbles going in many places once a bonus was scored; you can't possibly collect them all before they destroy, but at least you have a good chance of picking up a score boost when it happens. Maybe its time I revisit this board and see what I can do with offboard logic as well as some of the other tricks I've learned since then. BTW I love your Asteroid Pinball. It has come a long way from pinball wizard. Grats! | 2010-02-14 08:24:00 Author: Aezuriel Posts: 5 |
