Presentation in school

Archive: 46 posts

Hey there, I've got to make a english presentation in school. (For those who don't know: I'm from Germany)
It doesn't matter which topic we talk about, but it has to go about 5 minutes, and it has to be spoken in English.

I think I will choose Steve Irwin.
I will post my presentation in this thread, and I hope you can rate my posting. Or maybie give me a hand, because I don't know what I could tell about Steve Irwin, 5 minutes are pretty long.

Greetings, IndianaStatic

You could talk about what happened on the day he died. Like the previous events that led up to his death.2008-09-28 14:43:00

You can say, that of all the creatures he went up against, he died from the most peaceful of them all >_>2008-09-28 14:44:00

Yes I already planned to tell about the irony that he died because of a stingray.

Well, I think I can fill up the 5 minutes.

lol! good example! I'm imagining how a caveman got himself into that situation in the first place. "Leave. Water. Hole!" lol

Sorry for digging out this thread, but I just accidentaly my whole presentation. I want to share it with you, there are some parts, you sure won't miss it, I need your help (just words I want to know).
Also I please you to check grammar and spelling, if it sounds good, what I should correct, what I should delete, what I should add.

Here you go:

Hello everybody,
today, you will hear something about Steve Irwin in my presentation.
I chose him because I think he is a cool guy and he isn't afraid of anything (nevermind, just for the lulz )
For all those who don't know Steve Irwin, (I put a picture on the overhead projector while I'm describing him) he was a kind of famous animal-explorer, his nickname was "Crocodile Hunter". I will go on with a detailed description of him
First of all, his right, full name is "Stephen Robert Irwin", but Steve Irwin almost sounds better.
Steve Irwin was born in Feburary 1962 in Australia, and he lived until September in 2006.
He started his contact with dangerous animals pretty early, by helping his father, whose job was to get animals like reptilians out of (need a good and easy word for "areas which are inhabited by people).
With 9 years, he caught his first crocodile, cooperated (can I say cooperated here?) by his father.
During the 80's, he lived in the australian bush and he continued what his father did, he was seen as an expert for survival in the wilderness and the transport of dangerous animals like crocodiles, snakes and so on.
And there's also a turtle that's called after him, because he discovered it first.
In June 1992, he married Terri Raines, she is also addicted to animals, and together, they took the "Reptile and Fauna Park" from Steves' parents in Queensland. This park is today also known as the "Australian Zoo"
Steve Irwin worked in this park, and he did the same job his father used to: Get/Rescue animals out from (inhabited areas). Today, there is still a team that is trained for this business.
In 1996, his documentation "The Crocodile Hunter" started to be shown in the australian TV. It became worldwide famous, about 500 million people in around 137 countries watched it. You can imagine how much that is, that's around 8 percent (%) of the whole world, who knew Steve Irwin, and that's pretty much!
He spent all the money he gained from his show and the merchandising, like toys of steve irwin, souvenirs and so on, to the animal rights group and his zoo.
As a result of his show which went (can I use went here?) 15 years long, a whole generation grew up with his documentations. They saw Steve Irwin as (Well I can`t think of a good word here, I'm searching for: "He is seen as the general idol of Australia), moreover as an hero.
Sadly, on the 4th September of 2006, he was accidentaly killed by a sting-ray. It's kind of ironic if you think about it: He met all dangerous animals you can think of, even played with 15 feet long crocodiles.
And then suddenly he was killed by an animal which killed only 3 people, whose are known in world-history yet.
The state offered a state funeral, but his wife declined polite, because Steve Irwin saw himself as a "ordinary guy", he never wanted to be celebrated like a famous star.
Summing up I want to say that I really enjoyed his show whenever I watched it years ago, and it's very sad that he's gone.
May he Rest in Peace.
Thank's for listening, I hope he keeps in your minds.

Do you think I can fill up about 5 minutes with that?

For all those who don't know Steve Irwin, (I put a picture on the overhead projector while I'm describing him) he was a kind of (you don't really need to say "kind of" here. I'd pull that out all together) famous animal-explorer, his nickname was "Crocodile Hunter". I will go on with a detailed description of him
First of all, his right (again, you don't need the word "right" here. It works, but it's not necessary), full name is "Stephen Robert Irwin", but Steve Irwin almost sounds better.
Steve Irwin was born in Feburary 1962 in Australia, and he lived until September in 2006.
He started his contact with dangerous animals pretty early, by helping his father, whose job was to get animals like reptilians out of (need a good and easy word for "areas which are inhabited by people)(I'd use the word "communities" here).
With 9 years, he caught his first crocodile, cooperated (can I say cooperated here?) by his father. (Instead of "cooperated", say "assisted")
During the 80's, he lived in the Australian bush and he continued what his father did, he was seen as an expert for survival in the wilderness and the transport of dangerous animals like crocodiles, snakes and so on.
And there's also a turtle that's called (instead of "called", say "named") after him, because he discovered it first.
In June 1992, he married Terri Raines, she is also addicted(The word "addicted" does not really work here; you may want to say "obsessed with animals" instead) to animals, and together, they took the "Reptile and Fauna Park" from Steves' (Should be "Steve's")parents in Queensland. This park is today also known as the "Australian Zoo"
Steve Irwin worked in this park, and he did the same job his father used to: Get/Rescue animals out from (inhabited areas) (Again, say "communities"). Today, there is still a team that is trained for this business.
In 1996, his documentation (Close, but you should say "documentary" instead) "The Crocodile Hunter" started to be shown in(Use "on" instead of "in") the Australian TV. It became worldwide famous (Reverse the two words; say "famous worldwide" instead), about 500 million people in around 137 countries watched it. You can imagine how much that is, that's around 8 percent (%) of the whole world, who knew Steve Irwin, and that's pretty much(Instead of "that's pretty much", say "that's a lot of people")!
He spent all the money he gained from his show and the merchandising, like toys of steve irwin, souvenirs and so on, to the animal rights group and his zoo.
As a result of his show which went (can I use went here?...Yes, you can) 15 years long, a whole generation grew up with his documentations(Again, say "documentaries" instead). They saw Steve Irwin as (Well I can`t think of a good word here, I'm searching for: "He is seen as the general idol of Australia... Say "they saw Steve Irwin as a national hero"), moreover as an hero.
(This last sentence is tricky; I would write it like "It's kind of ironic if you think about it: he encountered many different dangerous animals, even played with crocodiles that were 15-feet long. And suddenly, he was killed by an animal that had - according to modern records - had only killed 3 people)
The state offered a state funeral, but his wife declined polite (Say "politely"), because Steve Irwin saw himself as a (Technically, you should use "an" instead of "a") "ordinary guy", he never wanted to be celebrated like a famous star.
Summing up I want to say that I really enjoyed his show whenever I watched it years ago, and it's very sad that he's gone.
May he Rest in Peace.
Thank's for listening, I hope he keeps in your minds.

Do you think I can fill up about 5 minutes with that?

The changes I made are underlined. Hope this helps. Good work overall. English is very difficult along with German ironically.

Okie dokie other than the text and grammar corrections that have mostly been taken care of let me clarify a couple of points of fact.

Firstly Steve Irwin isn't really idolised by Australians at all, he is idolised by Americans and that is where he spent most of his time, made all of his money and mainly where he became famous on television, before that no one had heard of him here.

Secondly most Australians found / find him incredibly embarrassing with his hackneyed over used "Strine" (Australian Slang) I don't know a single person here who A) speaks like him or B) says crikey every 10 seconds. He does not represent the 99.9% of Australians that I know and it is a media impression of Australia and Australians in general that is just plain wrong. Other than that it is a fairly good report, but hey you don't live here so how would you be aware of how real Aussies feel about the guy.

I think he just represents (that was the word I searched a while ago :hero: ) the typical clich? the Americans/Europe/and all other had about Australia- a big dry land, with many bushes and kangaroos and many different, also dangerous animals, and the explorer have these nice short pants.
Same here with Tokio Hotel. For those who know this kiddie-rock-school-band: Don't compare them with the rest of us.

You know what I mean? Some worldwide-famous people of countries, represent for other people who don't know anything about the culture/etc. that land. And then the people think "Oh well he has to fit well with the other inhabitants, let's pretend all act like him HURR HURR"

Thanks. Well, I'm hanging out most time during surfin on websites where English is spoken.
And it's funny though, but since I'm a /b/tard my English improved alot

Just a thought, don't mind me for this but English isn't your mother language? Or you just don't care to type your things right ;] But nevermind, I understood it.

How do I say that he left his woman and two children?

"He left his wife and his two children behind"

That would work fine, but - in terms of a person's demise - we usually say something all the lines of "he is survived by...". For example, you could write, "Steve Irwin is survived by his wife and their two children".

English isn't difficult at all.. french is much harder.. as an European it is easy to learn English because the language is pretty similiar.

Topic:
I did it.. yesterday.. he asked a few days b4 who wants to make his presentation, and I wanted to end my excitement.. and said I want2do.. yes.. and today I got the paper with the mark.. I got a 1,2 (1 is the best, 6 the worst), that means I'm a bit better than an A- (A- would be a 1,25)
This presentation counts as much as a test.. and my last test was a 1,3.. I think I will get a good report this year (with this report I want to apply at Gamestio (a gamestop opens next year, October '09) and qualify as a retail salesman

Congratulations on the great mark!

And let's just pretend English is hard to learn, okay? It makes those of us who learned English as our primary language feel better at the end of the day.

Seriously, good job. It's nice when all of your hard work translates into such a good score.

Thank you for the congratz and thank you for your help
I got 5 points on my body language, 5 points in fluently/free speaking, 5 points on the part with the questions at the end (the teacher asks you 3 questions about your presentation and 1 question he searched somewhere else), but only 4 points on the presentation because in his opinion there was a lack of pictures, but in my opinion this is stupid, he wanted pictures of the animals but that presentation was about Steve Irwin and not 'bout animals in Australia

But nevermind, I'm glad.
