Ladylyn1: 'An Abandoned Future'- 3 Part Series. (Includes pictures and sketches)

Archive: 34 posts

Hi guys, so I've been back at university for 3 weeks now and I've had a little time to think about a future project which I will be building around easter/summer time. I'm hoping this series will be my best group of levels yet and therefore I'll treasure any input and ideas you guys give! This planning stage is critical as I did a very similar thing with Planet X and I was consequently able to create the entire level in just 5 days. I even plan out the logic so I don't need to think when im creating lol.

Ok so lets start with a general summary/theme/topic:

''An Abandoned Future' is a three part series based on the future world run by Robots. The entire human race has disappeared and it's your job as 'The Last Hope' to enter the city and free the humans (however expect a great deal of platforming, puzzles and robots to challenge you on the way!)

Three Parts:
1) The Last Hope
2) A Robotic Revolution
3) (Untitled)

As a starting point, a general idea for the theme of the futuristic city:

http://fc09.deviantart.net/fs18/f/2007/177/f/2/Speedpaint___Future_City_by_ANTIFAN_REAL.jpg

A sketch I made on the theme of a future harbour:

Storyline:

Warning (Potential) Spoiler Alert

The Last Hope

The Introduction:

The introduction will set the scene and describe how Robots have captured all the humans and locked them up. The reason for locking the humans up will be explained later (maybe part 2). The survival of humanity consequently falls to you.

H.O.P.E:

The level will start in a lab where you will be informed by a computer about the need to enter the city and disable the central computer network which controls all the robots. A single robot called H.O.P.E (the only robot not under the control of the central computer network) will journey with you initially. I am planning on trying to make H.O.P.E part of the gameplay and thus interactive with the player. Consequently H.O.P.E will do most of the platforming sections at the beginning (mainly jump sections- therefore lots of winches will be used ) and maybe even act as the second player in some 2x sections.

Here is my interpretation of what H.O.P.E will be like:

12160

Note: the wheels and arms move on wobble bolts. H.O.P.E will be positioned on the back layer and therefore its arms must be on the thin layer at the front of its body so they do not interact with the background (which will be layer glitched). It will also have a rocket on the underside of its body in order to give the impression that its flying when the winch lifts it off the floor.

Off to the city:

This section of the level is still in the thinking process and guess what... any ideas here will be really helpful! Basically I want to have a very beautiful backdrop (it will probably end up something like that at the beginning of Whichever Way the Wind Blows- Red) with some simple platforming elements. H.O.P.E needs to be able to pass this area and therefore it can't be too complex. Also any ideas with multi-'player' sections where H.O.P.E helps the player out will be really helpful!

Here are some sketches I made:

An operational crane system to move the player (and/or) H.O.P.E
12161

Yes that's right... a flying train?
12162

The Lift:

I've already planned out this section... basically it will be an awesome (and very unique!) roller coaster lift. I won't explain anymore but here are my plans for it. (Note they will probably only make sense to me lol!)
12164

Underwater:

This section of the level is also still in the thinking process and guess what... any ideas here will be really helpful too! After the lift ride the player will find themselves in an eerie (yet futuristic) sewer section... some underwater platforming ideas would be great here! Note: H.O.P.E is not with the player at this time so the platforming may be more difficult.

The Robots:

The level will end when the player falls out of pipe and into an eerie underground base of the robots. I have this section planned already! I'm hoping it will be a very scary scene to finish off the first part of this series!

A Robotic Revolution

At present I would love input for 'The Last Hope' however if you have a really great idea for the second two levels then I'd still love to hear what you've got to say! Just to let you know, at present I only have the general outline ready for the remaining levels!

Ty! Ladylyn1.

Is this going to have a Myst feel,if so,that would be awesome! I have an idea for the "Robotic Revolution" section of the series, you can make a robotic boss using the P.T.D!2010-01-29 01:49:00

Hm a Myst feel isn't what I was aiming for... but I suppose that without anybody in the level, it will have quite an empty feel similar to Myst. Ah and thanks for the PTD idea... might use that for the finale boss- the Robots will still be around in the last part too!

It's awesome to see that there are still some fans out there Myst is hands down my favorite game/book series of all time. Ladylyn - did you get the books yet?!?

Ok, so about this project:

I think it sounds awesome. I love the idea of the robot acting as player #2 and helping you complete 2 player stuff. The mechanics (flying train, crane system, roller coaster) sound like my kind of LBP level! You know I'm a big fan of your stuff, so if you ever need any help, someone to bounce ideas off of, or a level tester, please don't hesitate to ask! I do have one suggestion - you should incorporate some sort of puzzle. And maybe it's as simple as getting the robot from point A to point B .. but there should definitely be something - then you'll have an element of gameplay for all types of sack people

I have some new level ideas as well - surprisingly nothing to do with Myst, yet still Myst-like I'll PM you when I can collect all my thoughts - and when you clean out your inbox!

Lol yeah im pleased to see some Myst fans out there too! Its nice to know people remember the classic pc series and that im slightly connected with it- even if on lbp. And no... im still yet to read those books!

Ok so i love the idea that perhaps the H.O.P.E helps the player through the level, but also there may be times when the player has to help H.O.P.E through tricky sections of the level. A section perhaps where H.O.P.E gets an electric shock and is unable to operate therefore forcing the player to help the robot out and get it to a power section...

I think i'll keep the gameplay generally pretty simple but with a few 'wow' moments. With my time on lbp I've noticed that people tend to like games with easy elements but impressive visuals and mechanics... hence the roller coaster, flying train, cranes etc...

Thanks again for the input!

You should give Myst a go! It's pretty challenging but worth a play through and very rewarding when you finish. The first level in the series ('The Last Hope&apos will be half plat-former half puzzle game and should have a mix of things for everybody. Also plenty of action and an ending with plenty of suspense!

I hope I can find it at a local store or something. It sounds like it was successful,so finding it shouldn't be hard =)

ahhh I doubt it Look for it on Amazon.com or just google it. Ebay might even have it. I recommend getting the Myst 10th Anniversary Edition because it has Myst, Riven, and Myst III, Exile all on DVD's in one box. I think I bought it for 19.99 USD.

lol except your level might have slightly better graphics than Myst

I love the idea of H.O.P.E. shorting out from electricity and the player needing to help him! And I completely agree about what most people like in LBP. But I guess you have to decide who your target audience is. If you want more plays and hearts, then yes, keep it simple and add a few wow moments.

Yeah I saw that on the PSN ... why would they only make it for the PSP?!? I would've considered buying a copy for my PS3 just so I wouldn't have to open my PC copy.... yeah, I'm weird like that Oh and if you're not allowed to buy stuff online (because of parents).. maybe you have a birthday coming up? I just seriously doubt you will find the Myst 10th Anniversary at a local store (you might get lucky!), and I can almost guarantee you won't find the original Myst at the local store. Maybe "Real Myst" or "Myst Masterpiece" .. but those are hard to find as well.

Here's what you should look for: Myst 10th Anniversary DVD Edition (http://www.amazon.com/Myst-10th-Anniversary-DVD-Pc/dp/B0000AFWWH/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1264868567&sr=8-1)

Sorry LL1 for getting off topic.....

Personally it would be cool if HOPE was a flying robot that say over a broken section of platforming it hovers over it and helps you swing2010-01-30 16:41:00

Yeah the actual game is very difficult to pick up on its own. Although i would imagine that it wouldn't be impossible to find real myst. You can even get it for ipods! Your best bet is probably to buy the collection and get ready for a lot of problem solving!

Don't worry about going off topic lol!

Yes this is an idea i was thinking about earlier...

Keeping HOPE grab-able means a player can use the robot to get to different locations, however when Hope has to leave (flies off into the sky) it means that the player could go with it too.

If HOPE's not grab-able then it reduces gameplay but stops this problem occurring.

Hmmmm, decisions decisions.

Oh yeah and anyone up for CCTV camera's that shoot plasma balls? Or is that a bit on the cheap side...

Make hope fly through a invisible layer of gas

Yeah I could do... and with a laser (like in Planet X) make it look a bit more authentic!

Instead of security cameras that fire plasma why not do it so if you are detected by the security camera the doors lock and a turret pops down, that you have to avoid...2010-02-02 07:59:00

So I should use locking doors and pop down turrets or not?

What about a Pest Vent, that you have to navigate your way up but with Laser grids you have to deactivate to proceed upwards.2010-02-16 08:51:00

This sounds awesome, loads of ideas bouncing about at the moment. The popout turrets sound like a brilliant idea, and if implemented differently need not be the same as the MGS levels. When you're infiltrating the robot base you could use searchlights to activate them, and until that point they could be invisible. You can use the popout-of-a-door thing for pretty much anything, it's something that isn't done that much on LBP. Might make for some interesting platforming sections too.2010-02-17 11:41:00

What you could do is a floor based turret... so if you activate say a pressure pad, the doors slam shut, up from the ground rises a turret that times out... :kz:2010-02-17 11:50:00
