Shenmue: Forklift Racing Competition! F4F

Archive: 15 posts

Remember the days when Sega made systems not games? Well I sure do. One of my favorite games for Sega's last system was Shenmue. So I decided to recreate one of the memorable moments for LBP. The level begins with some dialogue from your coworker Mark. He explains the rules and controls then sends you on your way.

Here's a screen shot of the forklifts. I'm currently working on a way for 4 players to race, but for now 2 is the limit.

The key to a making a faster lap time is to use the forks to your advantage. Don't put them too high or you might crash!

And if all goes well you might just make it to the finish.

For those of you who are interested, I'm having a competition to see who can achieve the high score on my level. The person with the fastest time will win a custom prize by yours truly. The competition ends 2/28/10 but i may consider giving out prizes monthly. (Depending on how many plays it gets) So invite your friends to play and challenge them on this wacky race. Thanks in advance for playing!

If anyone could give me advice on how to make my photos larger I'd really appreciate it. Good deeds don't go unrewarded!

EDIT:
Thanks guys for helping with the photos!

Hi, I loved Shenmue and was really disappointed when I found it there were to be no more. I was really looking forward to seeing that story reach a conclusion. I hoped they would continue it on PS3 but it looks like that's never gonna happen. Shame.

Anyway your forklifts look great. I made one too in the early days of LBP in a MGS level which I deleted unfortunately to make way for new levels. I still have the forklift though and it has 2 separate forks. Of course I had to make custom boxes because of the forks and boxes being on different layers but it actually worked great. Looking forward to seeing yours.

As for the photo size I always had trouble with that too until the guys on here told me to use a photo hosting site ( I use photobucket ) and upload them to that first. Be sure to go into more options before uploading though ( I usually choose 320 x Something ) and then when they're uploaded to that you can simply copy the IMG code under each photo and paste it into your post. Hope that helps.

One last word ( well 3 actually ) BRING BACK SHENMUE !!

Just played through, and thought I was a great level. The Forlifts were well detailed and the race mechanic was great. My only qualm was that I managed to flip the forlift across the finish line and subsequently ended up having to pop to get out. Maybe have the forlifts Demit at the end if they flip?
All in all a great level, 5 stars and a Heart from me.

Thanks for the feedback. The two problems I've been having are: 1. finding a way to let four people race without having them crowd at the starting gate. The gate won't activate until everyone's within reach. 2. Making the forklifts more stable without making the race too easy. I made better forklifts but the race is too easy with those. I plan on giving away the realistic forklifts as prizes.2010-01-29 02:13:00

First a big welcome to MR enigma!
I tried your level last night and I must say that I am very amused.
Your Forklift are really well done and thank you for your gift.
Now I fully expect a level created with the 3dglitch!!

How are you capturing your images? My personal preference is use a digital SLR on a tripod in front of the TV with no flash. I then resize them to something around 1000x600 and upload to flickr, which automatically gives you a variety of images sizes to choose from when providing image links.

Color representation is a bit off with my camera, but I find the detail can't be beat. I suppose the next upgrade would be using a capture card in a PC.

I think that has captured directly from his ps3.
you have to take a picture within your level then from your pod you must select the photos you took and with the square button on the controller you must click Import on the hard disk of the ps3.
Then you must connect a USB stick and transfer the images on it.

Shenmue is just like real life. You embark on an epic quest but chuck it all in when you discover they've got Outrun in the local arcade. Oh right, great level by the way. The forklifts have a unique feel to them and the styling is very Shenmue 2010-02-04 01:05:00

Thanks for all the comments guys! I'm thinking of updating the racing mechanics again. The 1st time I updated, I accidentally deleted the new level and published the old one. Would anyone be interested in designing a background for this level?2010-02-13 18:29:00

I'll check this out, I still have a Dreamcast & a copy of Shenmue, I was near the end of it, where you have to fight that Gollum-like character but I lost.... you can actually continue but I wanted to train more so I could beat him.... I never got around to it & I'm sure my game save is probably erased...

I also have an untouched copy of Shenmue 2 for Xbox, I meant to play it after beating Shenmue but, I never did...

Ah, that's too bad, Apecheese. Unfortunately, I had to lock my level for several repairs. Apparently there was a problem uploading the scores a few weeks ago. I'll let everyone know when I republish.2010-03-04 07:16:00

I loved Shenmue 1 and 2, i was disappointed when they discontinued the series and left the end of the story empty... I hope the level is open again soon so I may play it. 2010-03-04 10:41:00

Me too Stephanie. I loved that game and was really disappointed when the Dreamcast was scrapped. I thought they would surely carry on the series on PS3 as it was such a groundbreaking game at the time and had an epic engaging story and characters.
