LBP Secret Service

Archive: 5 posts

I have started to embark on making a series of levels. The first is called "LBP Secret Service" I made it to test the water and see if it would become popular enough to make a sequel. I am hoping to get at least 100 plays before I make a sequel. Please go and give it a try, you might even like it!2010-01-27 21:37:00

Hey, great to see you here! I think you'll find everyone here extremely helpful and friendly - definitely more so than YouTube.

I'll replay your level and post my detailed review in a bit.

Hmm... As an introduction, it looks great and promising. But it doesn't work as a level: it's just a corridor. I understand you want to test the waters before investing too much time on a level, but you should have added some puzzle or challenge before the scoreboard!

Check Taffey levels, he's a master when creating headquarters where you receive your mission, and then interesting challenges to complete that task.

Sorry it took me so long to review this one. I played it when you first published it, but I needed to refresh my memory.

In any case, this is a good start to your series of levels. I like the look and feel of your headquarters, and your sticker work is very good. Of course, I like your automatic doors - although the timing seems to be slightly off. It looks like you may need to reduce the trigger radius of the proximity switches attached to each door. Your "hi-tech door" sound objects seem to be set up well, so don't change that at all. Speaking of sounds, you did great with adding sounds throughout the rest of the level. That's an important aspect that often gets overlooked, so keep doing what you're doing. The right sounds in the right places can often make or break an enjoyable experience.

So my one main complaint is that this really isn't a level... but it is a good "tester", or intro if you prefer. You obviously need more challenges, more length, and more for the player to do before reaching the scoreboard. Don't go crazy trying to invent the newest and greatest thing ever - sometimes good, old fashioned platforming is all you need. Make some things to hop around on and a few score bubbles and you're well on your way to a great level. It can be hard to think of things to fill up the space with, so do what I do: play a bunch of other levels, particularly good quality ones, until something inspires you. I'm not saying you should copy someone else's work exactly, but use it as a source for your gameplay concepts.

One last thing I'd comment on is that you mentioned you're looking for 100 plays before you make a sequel. This is a tricky one, because there's an interesting relationship between plays and creations. On one hand, who wants to waste time creating something if nobody is going to play it? I certainly wouldn't. Then again, who wants to play something unless they know it's complete? The truth of the matter is, creating at its best is done simply for the sake of creating something. Honestly, it's fun! Smile while you create, enjoy the journey, and go from there.

So anyway, I rated this "worth playing", which equates to 3/5 stars. You definitely have the skills you need to create a killer level, so let's see it!
