Play, Create ... Shoot-Em-Up?

Archive: 9 posts

Ok so this isn't exactly LBP-related, but it has to do with creating stuff on the PSP so I thought I'd post it here.

In a recent Playstation Blog post (http://bit.ly/aqYFLf), developer Just Add Water now says that the upcoming PSP version of their retro space shooter Gravity Crash will feature a level editor, just like its big brother on the PS3. I've had a lot of fun playing Gravity Crash over the past month or so, but I have yet to do any level creating. I'm very excited to hear this feature has been added for the PSP, and I may finally start dabbling in create mode here and there when that version is released.

So, are any of you planning on giving this game a try? The price has not yet been formally announced, but it shouldn't be more than $10.

Not me, I'm not a big shooter fan. I'm still in doubt over ModNation Racers, too.2010-01-27 21:49:00

Mod Nation Racers looks pretty cool in it's own way I think, the characters and cars are so customisable and the way the tracks are built up is quite fun (you drive around to create the path of the track. Ok so you won't get the puzzles and complexity that you get in LBP but it's still a really accessible game that everyone will be able to create levels in. I think it's actually be easier to make levels in fact, so you're less likely to get a load of rubbish levels like the ones that just have a scoreboard and a load of bubbles! 2010-01-27 22:21:00

Ah ya beat me to it Taffey. I haven't played it much of the PS3 version (though I hope I can soon). But I am quite excited of this so I can have something else to play. LBP PSP is better of course its just there's not that many levels that I like to play atm.

Though I'm crossing my fingers on the controls, cause I didn't like the single analog control setup, so I'm hoping there's a good substitute for the double analog on the PSP version.

Taffey, I played Gravity Crash on PS3 and it was fun. It is very cool, that it will be on psp and that there will be level editor. But IMHO gameplay and opportunity in LBP is much better and wider that in Gravity Crash. One big difference is in gameplay - Gravity Crash - is arcade scroll shooter and LBP is platform adventure. It is only choice of players favor - in what game they will play. As for me Gravity Crash - is great as scroll shooter, but its opportunies in creator mode are much smaller than in LBP. I only wish that authors will add paintenator to psp version of LBP as they added it to PS3 - it will be great.2010-01-28 10:07:00

Thanks for letting us know, Taffey. I just love games that include a level editor, whatever the genre.

LBP PSP is like a dream come true, but before that I enjoyed the wonders of Mega Man Powered Up, Practical IQ 2, Echochrome and others. I never created a shoot'em up, so it will certainly be interesting to give it a try. ModNation Racers looks promising too.

I'm still hoping for a RPG editor for the PSP (NDS will receive RPG Maker).

I know what you mean about MNR. LBP can be almost anything it wants to be, but in the end every MNR level will be a race. I'll probably still play it though. Gravity Crash does suffer from some of the same problems as MNR in that it will always be a shooter, but there are a lot more options. You can make door-opening puzzles, exploration type levels, and of course action-based levels. I was surprised at the game's versatility.

I think it's [MNR] actually be easier to make levels in fact, so you're less likely to get a load of rubbish levels like the ones that just have a scoreboard and a load of bubbles! Never thought of that! Very good point.

Then again, I have an extensive background in Lunar Lander from all those years hanging out in bowling alleys as a kid.

I also have PixelJunk Shooter, and I've been playing that via remote play when my television isn't available (i.e., when my wife is watching her shows). PJS is a 2-stick shooter (and a really fun one), but their PSP control adaptation is quite good as well. They use a lock-on format where the right shoulder button will target nearby enemies or halt rotation of the ship. When R is not being held the ship rotates and moves simultaneously with the analog stick. It has a very good feel to it and plays well this way - I hope GC PSP does something similar as an alternative to the single stick setup.

But IMHO gameplay and opportunity in LBP is much better and wider that in Gravity Crash.I definitely agree with that. LBP is much more flexible and there's a lot more you can do with the editor. GC will still be fun to mess with though. I tend to play other games while I'm trying to come up with LBP ideas - it helps clear my mind when I'm stuck trying to think of a way to create something.

Well some news has finally reached about this

http://blog.us.playstation.com/2010/07/19/coming-soon-to-psn-gravity-crash-portable-for-psp/

While I would be happy that its coming tomorrow, but I'm a little undecided.

You can only share levels by sending files to friends. (Not a big deal, but it will be hard to find good levels)
A new challenge mode
New Control Ship
And an easier "difficulty" (things have been made eaiser such as radar, Game Overs, etc)

The story mode looks exactly the same as the PS3 (its not mentioned in the blog entry, but those PSP screenshots look like story levels from the PS3) Can someone who is planning to get this tell me if the story mode is the same or not? Thats whats making me undecided on it.

Well, it looks pretty cool and it has me interested! I just want to know what kind of stuff the level editor can do. Maybe I'll watch some PS3 videos of it on youtube. And if it's under $10 and the game is good, then I'll most likely get it.2010-07-20 00:13:00
