Being signed out while typing a message in is really starting to annoy me now

Archive: 6 posts

CC can you please do something about this stupid system that signs you out.

I've just been doing some F4F again and typing a long-ish reply, nothing overly long though compared to some and when I tried to post it I was signed out again. It tells you to refresh the page and sign in again but when you do your message you've just painstakingly written disappears which is really frustrating.

Surely while you're typing the site should recognise that you're still active and keep you signed in. There must be something you can do about this isn't there? It's not a new thing either , it's been happening for as long as I can remember and I'm sure people have complained about this before.

I used to have this problem, too - now I always check the "remember me" box near the login, so that there's no time out; just remember to log out when you're about to close the browser 2010-01-27 13:26:00

Oh thanks Shadowheaven. Does that keep you signed in then even while typing a long reply? I thought that was just to remember you next time you logged on to save you putting the password in every time. I always used to do that but don't use it now since mrsvista set up an account too as it would mean every time she opened up the site she'd be logged in as me and would have to log me out and sign in herself and vice versa so it's easier for us to not use the remember me option.

I guess that's why you say to remember to log out whenever you leave the site?

If you are concerned about leaving yourself logged in, for whatever reason, then the alternative is to use advanced edit mode and hit "Preview Post" occasionally.

Not only will that tell the server you are still active, but it will also store the text you were writing in the browser history, so if you do leave it too long you should be able to go back to it. I think.

sorry, didn't see your reply there as I posted! The option just leaves you signed in forever (or until you sign out), so if you chekc that when you sign in and then sign out before you go offline, MrsV can sign in when she comes to the computer.

Well, I use firefox with a no hystory log policy, and every time I close it, all the cookies are deleted - I log out just to be sure to not leave an open connection server-side (I have to admit that I have no idea of how it works)
About the fact that you and MrsV have separate account: the first thing that you do when you get here is log in, right? Well, when you are logged in your name is shown near where the login box would be if you weren't logged in, so there shouldn't be any problem, just be a little careful.

This has been happening to me ever since I upgraded firefox and added a few new add ons, but not on here... usually only on a board I use where after I type some huge essay, I click submit, then get told to log in, then log in, and it's gone, then go back a few screens and it's still gone... then I tear my hair out and forget what it was I was even typing in the first place.

I used to habitually ctrl+a/ctrl+c posts before I submitted... I need to get that habit back.
