Treasure Hunter and a riddle of old castle

Archive: 42 posts

Finally I published my first adventure level. It's name is "'Treasure Hunter and a riddle of old castle", my PSN ID is Domik12.

Here is the story: You play role of Treasure Hunter, that always search some information and rumours about old treasures and hidings. A week ago you meet strange old man in tavern of small village. He told you a story about old castle in circle of mountains. Several centuries ago there lived rich family. But many years ago all inhabitants abandoned castle with unknown reason. Since that time few explorers went in that place, but no one came back. Old man give you a map of this place and told you, that if you want to explore this place, you must be very careful. And after small preparations you set out for a journey.

Here is some pictures:

Last two weeks I spend in fixing many bugs, that appeared in different places. Now everything work well, but if you will find some bugs or mistakes (especially in my English, that is not perfect, sorry I am from Russia and here not every bear well know foreign languages) - please feedback about it. And of course - please tell me you impressions after playing.

Thank you.

P.S. It is not exactly my first level. A month ago I already published small level called "Tank Manoeuvres " on a request of my friend, that want to see some tank-like engine. It was very simple level, tanks could move forward and backward, moved it's cannon and shoot on targets, that must displeasure after hit. I think, that it is not a kind of level, that can be mentioned on LBPC in separate post.

So long!

Arrestor, no, this sticker is from main story levels. I did not buy any additional content yet. And one more: in any level, if there is sticker switches, then in sticker menu there will be special group above all stickers, and in this group will be all stickers, that will used on level, see picture below:

http://my-lbp.narod.ru/LBP/my/th/b1.jpg

Maybe collection of stickers depends on game version ? I have Multi 12 version for Europe and Russia.

Right now I checked my level on community moon and there is 15 downloads and 4 stars. I think, that it means that some people could finished level. So problem with sticker is not global. But I think it will be better to change switch key sticker to something better compatible.

And one more- on high score table there are only 2 players. It means that 13 others did not finished level or something other?

Lleonard Pler just wrote that if player did not finish story level for 100%, than he did not have some amount of stickers. So it is the reason, that you have not that treacherous sticker. Sorry. For help - it situated on some level in Golden Sands part.

In my future level I will not use stickers for the time being. (detail in tiopic Question about using sticker switch on levels (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=21931-Question-about-using-sticker-switch-on-levels&p=380735#post380735))

I didn't have any problems with the sticker switches, but I got stuck in the eclipse puzzle.

So far, I'm enjoying the level. You've got talent in creating innovative puzzles (like the one where you make rocks fall to press buttons), and I like how you take maximum profit of the scenery with backtracking and intrincate mapping. Sometimes, it's not clear where you must go, some custom cameras and magic mouths would help. The eclipse puzzle is very interesting, but it's too hard for me, or maybe I didn't understand what I have to do. Do I need the two blocks? They seem more a problem than a solution...

The sticker switches are used in a very original way too, but it's risky because as you have seen, not everyone has collected the needed stickers. Sony should activate an option to create custom stickers and put them in prize bubbles, this will lead to new types of puzzles.

Lleonard Pler, thanks for good words about me work, its very pleased to hear it from such good creator as you. For adding some fixes on level I unfortunately have no any amount of free temperature. Right now I can not add no objects or stickers on level. It has 100% temperature. And honestly I don't know what I can delete without rebuilding a big part of level.

About eclipse puzzle - it can be solved in different ways. I tested it with my wife and friend, wife spend about 15 minutes to solve it (she has great patience) and my friend, that has big experience in platform games and in LBP on PS3 solved it in two ways in less then 2 minutes. I solve it not jumping on it above, but firstly push plank in almost balance position and then stand under one end of it and with small jumps keep balance of it. You need to keep balance for about 2 or 3 seconds for open door to next part of level. I am sorry, that this puzzle stopped your walkthrough of my level. Your opinion is very important for me, as you are very good creator and I always have great fun and pleasure when play on your levels.

And big thanks for all people on this forum, from your posts I learned many things and find the way to avoid some bugs that stopped my level creation. Thanks, LBPC!!!

Hi Domik!
I finally played your level!
I think you had some really great ideas in this one! (some already mentioned by Lleonard)
The Dragon is fabulous (even if dont understand why he is made of stone). The Ghost that leads the players around and spawns every now and then is a great idea too!
I didnt have a problem with the eclipse puzzle at all... plus i think thats a nice one!
The next meeting with the dragon is also well made and has a touch of an oldschool arcade game.
I really love the section where you have to use the boxes to dodge the fireballs. (And its important, that the shooting stops when the boxes reach the dragon. This shows that you actually tested a lot and really thought this through)
After that some doors seem not to work in the way they are supposed to and the level nearly broke for me (one door just opened a little bit).
The teleporting after that seemed kind of rough.
The end of the level is great again (nice idea with the scoreboard!)

So my overall rating:
Story: I really like it and i think you had some great ideas on how to tell it (the ghost especially)
Length: This level has a good length and that without much backtracking (which can be good). You fitted much in this level and and i cant remember all that after just one play through. But you have to be careful with long distances of running. That can get boring after a while.
Ideas/Gameplay: You had some great ideas and they fit in this level perfectly. I really like the puzzles, the Dragon and the way you put everything together.
Sounds: You made good use of sounds and music in this level and i think they all fit.
Look: So here i have some problems. I think you could make more use of the corner editing tool. Some areas dont look "real". For example the underground path and some parts of the castle. It looks just empty at some places and the nature parts are too even.

But to sum it up i really liked this level and gave it 5 stars because you really put some time and great ideas in it.
Work on the visuals of your levels and you will have some fantastic creations in the future!

Arrestor, thanks for feedback and for good words! About decoration - I started to place stickers for decoration after finishing all main part of level . At that time I already had about 90% temperature. That is why there is not much decoration stickers and level has some places with only clear walls. In idea, when I just planned level there were many stickers and small objects, that add some atmosphere to the level. But during the work - I discover, that there are not much space for big box of ideas. So level is so many decoration details - as creator mode allow me to add. About more laborious work with corner tool - I just learn, this level is some sort of test chamber to create adventure style levels. Now I have several ideas about new levels - some as continue to Treasure Hunter Adventures and several separate stories. During work on them I will try to do more fine and detailed objects.

After that some doors seem not to work in the way they are supposed to and the level nearly broke for me (one door just opened a little bit).

What doors did not open? And what else problem did you meet? It is very important for me to know it, to avoid some mistakes and bugs in future.

And thanks for you patient while I fix the bug with the sticker.

I have to thank for fixing it!

I meant the doors after you win over the dragon. There is a black one that has to go up but seems to be broken.

I am not sure right now. I will play your level again to give you the exact position (But i cant do this right now sry. I post as soon as possible!)

Edit: Just looked again. Yes i mean the door in the treasure vault after the flight. If you do not run right through it and let it go down again it seems to get stuck.

One trick for that is changing the material in the background. Instead of using a plain material, use another one full of details.

For example, in my Frozen Kingdom of Skadi level, the cave walls don't have many stickers, but they don't look empty because the material I used already has many details. I used similar tricks for all my levels.

I just played through this and I really liked it.

The level is very long and there is a lot of exploring to do, and I enjoyed the story. I like your characters, especially the skeleton and the ghost. You did a good job telling the story and leading the character through the castle and underground caves, and I thought the simple goal of seeking treasure fit the theme of the level very well. There were score bubbles well placed throughout the level, although I personally would have preferred a few more. Players' scores seem to be 300-500 points or so, which is maybe a little low. The sequence of events is very good, and you must have used quite a bit of logic off-screen to do some of the more complex interactions. I thought the dragon was a little simple but still cool, and I really like the part where he opens his eye after you wake him up - brilliant! You have a good variety of challenges throughout the level, from platforming to sticker puzzles to keys/doors. The challenges did seem to be kind of standard, but I liked them. I really liked the 3 portrait stickers you needed to remember - that's a great puzzle. It's not too hard, and if you don't remember the exact sequence you can figure it out anyway. My only worry is that not everyone will have the right stickers, but you've already had some issues with that. I really love your house at the very end! I like the board that lists all your adventures, and the bed where you can "save" your progress is great. I'm not sure if you did this on purpose, but the scoreboard with the chair in front of it looked like a big TV - awesome!

I do have a few problems with this level. My first issue is right at the very beginning. I got stuck in the same place Arrestor did and had no idea what to do. I ran around and grabbed things and kept killing myself in the water to see what would happen, and I eventually had to come here to look up the clue. Unfortunately, it's not obvious at all that you need to use a sticker inside the circle and I'm sure that will get a lot of players stuck. The good part is, once you realize that you need to place a sticker there the rest of your level flows very nicely. Every time you see an open space on a wall, you can guess a sticker needs to go there. What you need to do is make that first sticker switch visible so that people can figure out what to do. Your clue is fine, but the visible switch will make a huge difference. To be honest, I think you should make all the sticker switches in your level visible. I've had issues with many different people not knowing what to do in the "search agent" section of my Interwebs level, so the next time I use sticker switches I'm just going to keep them all visible - it's too confusing otherwise.

Moving on, the rest of your level is a little plain and I found myself wanting to see some more decorations. Your choice of materials is good, but there are large sections of walls with nothing on them, so it's a little boring to look at. I did see some places with "brick" stickers, but it seemed more of an afterthought than anything. I also noticed some gaps between the edges of your materials where the back of the level is visible. I know it's a pain, but do your best to close those up and keep the visuals as neat as possible. The only glitch I ran into was at the very end of your level. After your trip into the clouds, you die and pop out of a checkpoint in your basement where you've stored your treasure. There's an elevator on the left side, but it's on the back layer so I managed to jump down in front of it by accident. I had to kill myself to get out of the hole there, but when I came out of the checkpoint again I fell to the right and saw some magnetic switches and keys. I had to jump to the left to get back to the level and was able to continue from there.

This is a great effort and a fun adventure. I rated this 4 stars and gave it a heart. Great stuff!

Taffey, thanks for feedback and good words about my work. As I said early - not big amount of decorations - is result of placing decorations after finishing level with main things. After that I already had very high temperature and there no much space for additional decoration. Next time I will try to do a bit shorter level but better decorated. About problem with stickers- I can do it all visible, but imho - more better way- to do first one visible for example of position and using and all others - invisible. About bug in vault - I'll try to fix it and door from vault too (thanks, Arrestor, to feedback about it). About a little free spaces between edges of material. - It is result if my first practice with tie-in materials. Sorry for that. I'll try to avoid it in future. Thanks again for many useful advices.

Sorry it has taken me so long to leave feedback on this level domik. You have been an incredible encouragement with all of your awesome feedback on my levels, so I really wanted to be able to leave some feedback on yours

Going into this level, I really didn't know what to expect, and the start of the level had me a bit worried. It looked a bit bland with the green below and the odd shaped sponge above me. I started thinking that this may be a level full of simple platforming with odd shaped platforms, but I couldn't have been more wrong. Soon after starting, I found the castle nearby and my adventure began.

I have to admit, I was confused right off the bat with the sun sticker. I wasn't really sure what to do (even though you gave the sun clue), and I actually had to log on here to figure out what was going on. In retrospect, it should have been obvious that I needed to go into my sticker collection, but I guess I just wasn't thinking straight (by the way, what was that block of cement floating in the air above the bridge to the castle???).

After getting into the castle, I had no more problems figuring out what to do, and the level played smoothly. I'm going to be honest with you here, I think that you have an amazing level on your hands. I am astounded with just how epic this level really is. I think that if you could really fix up the level with better scenery, and also fix a few of the bits that were buggy, then this could be one of the very best levels on PSP.

I think my favorite part of the whole level was the dragon. You did a fantastic job of throwing multiple boss fights at me with the dragon. And the dragon looked great! I also liked the simple door unlocking mechanism to progress through the level, but I felt that it was sometimes confusing to figure out which door I just unlocked. It would be awesome if you could somehow hint toward which door was unlocked.

Hmmm... I really don't know what else to say. I seriously loved this level. I can't believe how low the rating is on it! I really feel that it is probably due to the difficulty figuring out what to do at the very start of the level (with that sun sticker), and also with the scenery throughout the level. If you are still interested in improving the level, it would be awesome if you would experiment with adding more trees, decorating the castle, and making the sticking issues more obvious. If you are having a hard time decorating (because, I know that it can be very difficult), check out levels made by JackofCourse and Lleonard_Pler. They both do a great job with scenery, and it's easy to learn a thing or two if you just look at their levels and figure out what you like. One easy thing to add some flavor is to just add a thin plane in front of one of the thick ones, and make it fun and jagged. Hmmmm... that is sort of confusing... here is an example from one of my levels:

http://i609.photobucket.com/albums/tt179/amazingflyingpoo/LostatSea4.jpg

See how those sections of the wall have a thin layer in front of them that doesn't match up? That can be a fun way to add a bit of zing to the level. Obviously, you should do a lot more than that to add flavor, but that is one small thing that you can add here-and-there for some flavor.
Also, some of the walls in the background don't meet up very well. Just mess with the corner edit tool and you should be able to fix that.

Lastly, I had a few technical problems. One of the elevators didn't take me up until I jumped? I'm guessing that it had something to do with a proximity switch issue, but either way, that would be something good to look into.

My last issue was once I finally defeated the dragon, a HUGE wall of graph paper popped up and I was really confused as to what I should do. I think the idea was that the player should run to the left and be killed and teleported somewhere else. Well, I was in the dragons mouth at the time, so I couldn't run left, and I couldn't see, so it was a guessing game for me at that point. If you want to kill the player like that, then there are plenty of ways that would work better than this. Just message me if you are interested and I will be glad to give some ideas.

So, I had a lot to say, but it was mainly because I liked the idea that you had sooo much! I have no idea if you are even interested in this level anymore, but if you are, then I would love to see how you fix it up

Great work domik, I am thoroughly impressed!

amazingflyingpoo, thanks for detailing feedback and good ideas for doing level better. Right now I think about fixing something on my level, but I can just fix something, that already is on level, because I can not add anything - thermometer is overheated. So I plain to make visible first sticker switch as example of its appliance and some fixes with broken doors. I'd like to do more fixing and additions, but for doing that I must first delete something from my level and I don't know what it can be, because all things in level are used in gameplay process. Do you have some ideas - what is needless in my level? I tried to delete some stickers and do less amount of corners in caves - but it did not change temperature. So right now I can only think - what I can change and fix, but can not do much. Waiting for you supply.

And right now I work on second level, that will continue adventures of Treasure Hunter and I try to avoid most disadvantages of my first adventure level.

P.S. I just republished level with several fixes:
First sticker switch madded visible
Several problems with doors and platform fixed (thanks amazingflyingpoo, Taffey and Arrestor for feedback about bags)

Lastly, I had a few technical problems. One of the elevators didn't take me up until I jumped? I'm guessing that it had something to do with a proximity switch issue, but either way, that would be something good to look into.

amazingflyingpoo, what platform did not work? one after fireplace? I fixed it today and all work fine in last version. Thanks for good feedback and playing on my level. And if you have good ideas - please write it, I am always waiting for such things.

Hey Domick12,

Let me begin by apologizing for my naughtiness . You have been such a wonderful reviewer for not only my levels, but also others throughout various LBP forums, and I feel ashamed to have taken this long to give you the review that you so rightly deserve. Like others have mentioned before me, this level is full of fresh ideas to compliment a quirky storyline, and your characters like the skeleton and dragon made the player interaction with the story that much more engaging. The level also had a good length and great variety of gameplay elements.

Oh, and thank you for the update on the sticker switches, particularly in the beginning. I've been watching this thread since you first published the level, and I'm glad you addressed the issue by making the switch visible. I think this was effective particularly for the first switch as it tells the player to be aware of sticker switches later in the level, and I think the other sticker switches were adequately framed to suggest stickering without showing the actual switch. Very effective modification...

In terms of suggestions, I'm afraid others before me have already mentioned what I would've said to improve your level. I'm aware that you ran out of thermo due to the length of the level, and I would agree that sacrificing a bit of length for decorations is definitely worth it. Other than choosing a material that has a busy pattern to fill up space, you can also choose one sticker and use it repeatedly on the same background material to make a custom pattern without affecting the thermo. I would also follow Arrestor's suggestion to use the corner-editor tool more to give organic shapes, particularly in the underground sections. Other than that, I would suggest avoiding "blocks" of material to give the level more polish. For instance, you created four blocks in the "eclipse" puzzle: two out of dark polystyrene and two out of wood to prop the moon and sun. For the dark polystyrene, you should try to incorporate it more to the design of the room, perhaps shaping them into planets. The wooden props in the area seemed out of place and were distracting to the celestial atmosphere. Definitely sculpt those pieces to give them more of an appeal and a sense of belonging to the space.

Also on more than one occassion, I didn't know what pushing a button or hitting a switch did. An easy way to show what a switch does is to place a magic mouth to create a cutscene to where the change occurs. If the switch or button is set to on/off, attach that switch to the magic mouth so that activating the switch will trigger it to go to the section. Just make sure the trigger radius of the mouth is large enough to be activated from where the player is when s/he is activating the switch. Did that make sense? If not, just PM me and I can explain it better...

I also read in another forum of someone commenting on your grammar. I for one am truly impressed with how well you communicate your ideas given that English isn't you native tongue, and I would totally be a disaster if I were to write Russian! If you ever need help saying something or if you want me to edit text for your levels to give it some extra polish, just let me know, and I would be more than happy to help...

Overall this was a fun adventure, and I'm looking forward to playing more of your levels. Here's 4:star:s and a heart for all your hard work.

Balancing the universe,

Hey, jeffcu28! Thanks for positive feedback and good advices. I agree with all your comments. And I will do my best to improve something on my future level. By the way - I tried to delete a lot of different stickers to decrease "temperature" but there was no any effect. Maybe - if temperature is already 100%, then deleting stickers - not right way to decrease it? Or I did something wrong. I have big with to learn useful things about creator's mode and it's features and read with interesting many post on this forum about glitches of LBP and way to avoid it. But I just learn to create big and complex things, so please accept my regrets for some bugs and disadvantages.

About using magic mouth as help to explain what change after using some switch. I know about it and plained tu use on my level, but when I try several times to add this, I got terrible things - mouth work, but it show not what I want from him, but some random part of level, several time a quite far from initial point. After several tries I decided not use it feature. But when I try to tune it on my test level - everything work fine. I try to do multiple mouths and all were fine. But when I tried to do same thing in my Treasure Hunter level - I had that sad bug. Can anybody explain me what it was and how I can avoid it.

And, jeffcu28, thanks for offer of assistance with English texts. I will use it if I will need to. And by the way - did you find some big mistakes and strange places in my texts?

Anyway - big thanks for feedback and many good offers.

Hidy Ho Domik12! I've given the level another play and I was reading back through the feedback and I think I can answer that last question you asked:

did you find some big mistakes and strange places in my texts?

I think that everything that you say is completely understandable, but there are many places where the sentence structure makes it difficult to understand if you do not carefully read it. If you are interested in the help, I would also be glad to play through an early version of your next level and point out how I might say something. But that doesn't mean it needs changing! You deserve a lot of credit because not only are you creating, but you are also using a language that is not your native language for the text!

Keep up the awesome work!

I hope that it will help players to find my level in big world of community moon. And it is cool that JHKthree did that video. For me it means that I did not bad thing. Big thank fo you, JHKthree!2010-02-08 09:51:00

Just played this level and I am amazed at just how big of a level it was. It had a nice little story and sever amazing puzzle sections. The dragon was really a work of art and the lava that emitted fire was a neat trick. The only thing I found that could use improvement was that the materials in the first section were all the same and sometimes made it hard to see differences in layers, such as when you have to go into the rock to avoid the gas. Other than that, it was a great level. :-)2010-03-19 19:07:00

Hey Domik! So I went to download this and it turns out I'd already played it and hearted it a while ago before I found the forums Anyways, I just gave it another play and wanted to let you know how I liked it! (Keep in mind I haven't read anybody else's replies to this, I want to give you my personal impression before I do)

I was amazed at how long the level was! You fit so many challenges and puzzles. That balancing puzzle was really tough(I loved the intro for it about balance in the universe!), I could see it scaring away some players but I don't mind a tough challenge. I liked how you used the sticker switches, that's something I don't see very often and you used them very well, it adds another layer of interactivity when you involve the popit The corner editing in some parts was a bit blocky, but then again I'm sure that's part of the reason you were able to cram so much interesting gameplay into the level, so I can't really complain about that ;p

Overall I gave this one 4 stars and a heart for some clever and creative mechanics, the dragon character was fun too After playing the second treasure hunter level from you, I can see you've already improved a lot! Looking forward to more from you Domik!

Hey Domik!,

This level was prettyy good. The scenery and visuals could use just a bit more work, but its okay. There were many platforming parts in this level that were basic, but fun. Your corner editing is a bit chunky and such, I hope you could do better in the next level.

Your puzzle elements with the stickers and such, were well put into this level. Not too challenging, except for the remembering the past owners of the castle. The first time I played this level, I was a bit confused. Your sayings in the level were very wise and well put. The balance puzzle was pretty hard. I did not even know what those block were for next to the balance beam. I left them alone, since they probably would make the puzzle harder. I got it though. The dragon was a nice touch. I loved the saving joke about "Monster Hunter" I laughed up a bit there.

Nice work, nothing outstanding and could use work on visuals.
5 stars and a heart.

Hey there. I've just tried this level out. It was great. The Use of stickers was great. The sticker riddles were nice. I really enjoyed the other riddles, even though the one with the Moon and Sun were pretty annoying. But I completed it. There's much space for improvements in the visuals. But I can allready see that your second level is much better there. Great level.2010-05-01 10:10:00

Thank you, ghik, for feedback on my first big level. It was long story of it's creation and I had many bugs with this level because we haven't at that time patches for it. And some players had problems with stickers switches, so I changed it for better compatibility. But I an very glad that my work still have new players how can have some more fun with it.

Thank you, TheNerd, for good feedback. This level was my experiential work in lbp on creating something big with some long story. And it is very cool that this level has so good players rating. And of course I learned much in creating visuals during work on this level and my new levels too.

hey domik!

i liked the level for 3 reasons!

1- the level had little bits of plataforming puzzles, etc...
2- i found all of the dragon parts pure genius cuz it had fire and humor (two thing i love )
3- the lenght of the level, it was long, and like 99% of the parts are good, so it was a good level to play!

although i found a bit lazy the fact that the pistons activators were all programmed to turn on/off instead of direction, but thats not much, so i gave you :star::star::star::star::star: and hearted...

Hello Domik,
Wow, your first level huh?Already you showed such great promise that carried on to your next great adventure in the pyramid. I had no problems getting around, and everything worked great. As many mentioned before, the Dragon in this level is great! It turned an ordinary castle level, into an extraodinary one. Some of the sticker work in this level is really good too, like the section with the 3 portraits. Also, your puzzles are very unique! I loved the eclipse puzzle in particular, never seen anything like it. I also like the story of the treasure Hunter, and I hope he returns in part 3....
