Broken Dreams project thread

You're busy traveling to work when all of a sudden, the ground shakes. A huge crack opens in the ground far below you, and things start going crazy. Winches break, materials shatter, the lighting freaks out, and the physics go wacky. As your hoverboard spirals to the ground, you have only confusion and fear in your mind.

several days later...
"Wha... Huh? What happened? Where am I?" you ask as you pull your sacky self out of bed in a rather dark, sleek looking infirmary. Another sackperson answers: "You're in The Compund. Just a few days ago, everything on the LittleBigPlanet went crazy. Now, I'm afraid... we're one of the few places left intact. We're in need of your help: Someone needs to go out soon and see what's causing all of this, and our scouts have failed. We need to train you to go hunting for the source; will you help us?"

That's the beginning of your adventure. Can you save LittleBigPlanet, or will it explode in a massive blast of cloth, cardboard, and dark matter?

The project originally grew out of the first level, which i put a futuristic spin on (since that's my favorite style). I plan to give it a more organic, less grid-like feel in future parts, with another theme being used towards the end. I don't have many sketches beyond a logo and a couple level sections, but i plan to do more sketching soon!

Update: i now have a small sheaf of sketches containing mainly level overviews and specific section designs. I've planned to interweave this with a bigger story of mine, sort of as a side tangent. It's still under heavy development, but you'll certainly be able to read it by the end of my series!2010-02-18 08:49:00

Update on level progress -- I released part 2 recently (see link above), and i seem to have a (very) small group of followers. The style in part 2 is *much* better, and the gameplay still rocks! Part one has some good moments, but overall it needs a *lot* of work to turn it into a true broken dreams level. I've kept the "core mechanic" section (with the rotating platforms), and a couple of the surrounding ones, but i need to basically replace (most of) the rest. I'll apply what i've learned in Part 2, and hopefully practice more with building layer-based challenges! It'll take me till at least the end of next week to prepare the level, but then i'll post a "Relaunch" thread with the new look.

I'll say one thing: it certainly looks different than i originally imagined it might, but it also looks waaay better...
