This is the official thread for my last project, the full name is Edward Stone and the Mysterious Case of the Phantom's Curse. Investigate on a mysterious case as Edward Stone, a detective with a great intuition and eye for the details, and his helper, Leon (probably name will change), he helps Edward with his skills: open padlocks, enter in strangers' houses and fight murders. They also have a little black cat, it will help them to find clues invisible to humans.

Story
Edward receives a call a night: a mysterious event happened in a village: a phantom appeared and threatens to kill the authors of his...situation. Obliviously i can't reveal all the info, or i will ruin the surprise.

The Village
Our detective comes to this little village, in the style of XVIII Century, a mix of Sherlock Holmes and Prof. Layton. NPCs will be very important in this level: everyone will be able to give you clues, and, most important, you have to found who is the author of this mystery.

Style
The style is the factor that makes this level unique: this level will be a real investigation level, where searching clues in the crime scene and asking to the villagers is fundamental to find the killer. After that, you'll think on these clues to find how the crime was made. Solving the crimes, the case will be easier to solve!
To find clues in the crime scene, you can check every particular, obtaining precious infos. Gathering them, you'll be able to understand how the victim was killed. To find clues from the villagers, you have to solve their puzzles. Logic, intuition, the puzzles will require many things t be solved.
Basely, the level will be in a SteamPunk style.

In Game things:
I'm working on some things to make investigation more funny but more deep too. Your helpers, Leon and the cat, will be useful. Leon, pressing R1 on him, will give you hints, this will make the investigation easier but you'll lose points too. The cat, pressing R1 on it, will make you enter in "Cat Senses" mode: all the scene becomes in gray tones, except for some special clues that will be colored with a shady light. Pressing R1 on them, you'll be able to gain additional infos, invisible for a human.
You'll have your personal notebook, where there will be written all the suspected, some infos and the clues you found. Checking it will make easier to organize the ideas and find the solution.

Concept Arts:
Edward in the one on the right, Leon on the left.

Suggestions and comments appreciated!

Thanks for the comments! I'm still projecting the level, so now we started to create only buildings (McRedFox). I'm drawing some NPCs and writing the story, and i'm making some puzzles for LBP from Layton's ones. I'm directing the create of this level, and i'll create the NPCs, make the village using the buildings of Fox, making puzzles, and do the most of the level. The team will help me, and i'll say them what to do, basing on what they can do best. I'm going to publish the level, but in the introdutcion and in the description there will be all the names of the helpers. I'm still searching for other ones, the more we are and faster we will end.2010-01-27 18:20:00

It shouldn't be too hard to reacreate something simular, but the thermo might stand in your way, I gave an attempt at recreating it. (Used about 1 hour)

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4019/4309092635_d9df9ea8cc_o.jpg

It does take quite alot of thermo for it's size. :

Cool, but i need to make it thermo freidnly: no useless corners, and use stickers for windows. If you want to send me that buildings, i'll check if i can make it use less thermo.
EDIT: if you made it in an empty level, there are some reason because it use much thermo: you used for the first time material and stickers, so it raises. Using many buildings of the same material will reduce the thermo cost.

Ok, next time i acces to PSN i'll send you a friend request. Anyway, i'm projecting the crime scenes: they are very detailed, because every object is a possible clue, and pressing R1 on it (or placing a sticker), a balloon will appear, talking as the think of Edward Stone.
Ex: Pressing R1 on a window, a balloon appears: "A nice window, it hasn't any sign of intrusion from here."

How are you supposed to pick the murderer? Will there be some kind of wheel you rotate with a switch, then you press a button..? Explain 2010-01-27 21:30:00

There are some suspected, but then, after some investigation and when the story goes on, you can shrink your suspected list. You'll have to interrogate suspected and asking to the villagers, insect about suspected's alibis, and finally, basing on the clues of the crime and solving how it was committed, you can think abut the real suspected. Solving all the crimes, you'll be able to see who is really the killer. There will be a part, where Edward must say who is the killer: the suspected will be in front of you, and there you choose who you think is really the killer. But, after that, the story doesn't end... I can't say anymore Just know that there will be multiple endings.2010-01-27 21:37:00

Ok, Dante...for the moment, I'm wrapped in an online create...approximately how big do you want the cave, so i can figure the size whenever I have a chance? What shape, what type of passages, how many layers do you need to be able to walk through...what kind of lighting?

Sorry if I'm being needy, but knowing this ahead of time will save me a lot of time later. a lot.

The...cave? I don't think there will be a cave in this level I need some help in puzzles, maybe indoor houses, and overall village. What can you do better?
If you have other level working on in this time, you can help me to adjust the level, the investigation and the details, and i think the level will be at that point in 1 month.

I swear you had asked...oh, nevermind. I'll just go checking my inbox and see who asked.

For right now, I'm workin on an online create entry for that contest, but the background layer glitch is giving me a headache...I could try to layer it more, but I don't have the time..i need to get the scenery done, and then the lighting (the first was at 33% completion till i had to fix all the lighting issues...blech)...and lastly will have to be the gameplay. ANYWAY....

I can do almost anything you desire...I simply need to know in what manner you desire it to be designed, mood, atmosphere, what materials i'm limited to, etc. yeah.

So, for the design see the pictures, the atmosphere is like prof. Layton, the sky is blu/gray, there isn't much light, and there is a mystery feeling in the air...
I have to choose the materials, but we need the fewest possible, the level will be complicated and we need all the thermo.
I have drawn the introduction: in the evening, a carriage is coming to the village. Credits appears, and there is a little prologue, then you come to the village, where the story begins.
And, i'm taking inspiration form the last Sherlock Holmes film: here's the trailer, where you can see many aspect of the style:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cv883wfeTtw&feature=channel

Maybe try to search for Steampunk on Google.

Yeah, if we work well, it will be awesome I said to Fox to make some buildings in this week, like my screenshots. In this week, i'll draw projects, make some basic village parts, write the story and make puzzles and NPCs. What can you do better? I'll like some help making indoors houses (but you need to follow the style of the entire level), some puzzles or anything.2010-01-28 22:09:00

@grayspence: Ok, so you can work with Fox making buildings or village part: carriages, houses, details and objects.
Deviant, if you want you can make some mini tests of each investigation, so i can see if it's hard, works well and other things.
Then, i projected a thing that will make investigation more cool and intuitive. I think i'll call it "Eye of the Detective", "Edward Stone's Mind", "Cat's Senses or something similar.
When you have to find clues in a zone, you can press R1 on a particular object, and the visuals become all gray, but a strange light comes from each possible clue. Pressing R1 on them, Edward will formulate a hypothesis, helping the player and making the case more simple. Obliviously, it can say only a little help for each object, but founding all them, it will not be hard to find the solution of the mystery.
Another thing: i think that will be a good idea to use, maybe near checkpoint and crime scenes, a little notebook, pressing on it you will see the Edward's Notebook, with some notes, the list of the clues, and the list of the suspected, maybe other helps.
The last thing: i' thinking about making some pats of the level when you swamp character: from Edward, you take the control of Leon, making different gameplay parts.

I really hope it won't be so super obvious answers to the mystery, and that you really have to think some to figure it out.

Suggestion: Make something simular to luos_desroc and TheAdiposes' butterfly helpers? (If you struggle, you can grab a butterfly for advice on how to proceed) That way, the ones who want it easier can use this kind of help and other people who want to try to solve it without help can do that aswell (Maybe the cat could give advice when you grab it, for example)

It was exactly what I was thinking of, but anyway I don't want to make the suggestions make the level very easy. I projected this: grabbing the cat, they'll appear some other clues, invisible in "normal mode". If you have problem, grab your helper, and he will give you some help. When i'll make some investigation scenes, i'll do many beta tests, so i'll see if it's too much difficult/easy.2010-01-29 19:53:00

That's the spirit! I was able to draw some puzzles... A little gears puzzles that will be the first puzzle that you'll have to resolve, and another still incomplete.
One crime is made, now I need to make it in the game, and here i need a bit help. I need someone that wants to help me making this things: the Black Cat, touching it you'll enter in "Cat Senses Mode": gray visuals and some clues are shiny, touching them you'll gain other precious infos. Basically, i thought using a Toogle for the visuals, and then some ANDs for the different balloons.
Then, i'm projecting a different gameplay part: Edward and Leon have many suspects about a locked building. There's no way to get the authorization to get there... There's only one chance: break the lock, and stealth inside: many minigames there: a puzzle to break the lock, and a gameplay part to sneak: if you pass that part, you'll gain useful clues, if they find you, you can't repeat it.

Argghh, McRedFox, my godmother had cancer some years ago, fortunately she recovered from that sh*t and she got better ^^

Dante95, you made me want to keep working on my level There are so many awesome things you can make with this game.

Your project is excellent, I've always loved the Victorian steampunk period, and I see a lot of people have wanted to work on a similar period since the new Sherlock Holmes movie came out !

Making a good level based on an investigation would be great :hero:

If cancer is diagnosed in time, it's not hard to cure, and some days ago they make a manifestation here in my city, showing the lots of progress made in the cure of it.

Oddmania, are you making a steampunk level too? Thanks for the compliment, i'm working hard in this project because i think it came be a innovative level. I'm making it mixing Victorian Steampunk with Prf. Layton style. I'm reading the first story of Sherlock Holmes too, A Study in Scarlet, and i'm loving it: the real character of SH is not as many think it is: i searched on Wikipedia and i read that he was never imagined with the hat and the pipe, but he is an eccentric and unique character, he is ignorant in politic, astrology and literature, but he knows well anatomy and chemistry, and obliviously, he has an incredible sense for details.
Sorry for this OT, but it really interested me and i wanted to make it public to everyone XD
And, as i said, i'm searching for other helper, so if you're interested in join my team and contribute to this level, let me know All the helpers will appear in the credits in the introduction, and in the description

Um, well, not really a Steampunk level, just like Prf. Layton or Sherlock Holmes, I'd say a Victorian one (maybe 1885 or 1895). But yes, I guess I'll put some loony zany machines anyway

Joining would be an excellent idea, but I've been working on my level for weeks so I'd like to finish it first :hero:

But I'd be very very interested to figure out how you turn this idea into a detective level, with proofs, clues, etc... this is gonna awesome ! :hero:

Don't worry, you'll have time to finish your level: i think the "real" works for this level will begin next week, now i'm only projecting and making separate things. I projected the 89% of the investigation mode: how to take clues, Cat Senses, asking to suspected/villagers, and the notebook. I can't reveal all the infos here, but if you join us i'll let you know that soon 2010-01-31 20:44:00

Probably the most important thing that i want in this level is innovation: LBP isn't only platforming, it can be everything, investigation too. A level that requires intuition and logic but that isn't boring, and that is very satisfy when you came to the solution. Like Prof. Layton said: "Every puzzle has an answer!"2010-01-31 21:42:00

2 new concept arts, some characters (only some ideas, probably i'll change them), and the look of the intro, with our detective in a carriage, going to the village with Leon and the cat:

but what i have seen in this thread it looks like its potential is great to great for my amatuer building status :/

Oh, Tutor Hitman Reborn, I know it a bit, I woulda never thought you got it out of this anime ! ^^ Well Blue Toad Murder Files is a PSN game, I didn't know it at all either until I came across it by looking for the LittleBigPlanet forum on a website (The Mysteries of Little Riddle It reminds me of your project because of the little (and probably quiet) town, which hides something more mysterious behind a fa?ade of tranquillity)

Good, I'm glad you want to use some Steampunk stuff, I thought you wanted to make something more realistic, much like Sherlock Holmes (which woulda been great too, but I still prefer Steampunk universe ^^)

And yeas, i want to mix realism and steampunk, i want to make a "out-time" village, it won't have an exact date, it's a strange village like in Prof. Layton! But i'm taking much inspiration from Sherlock Holmes film!

To be honest, Blue Toad Murder files is a boring game.
The challenges/puzzle thingies are easy and it's easy to figure out everything.
I bet the game is ment for 7 year olds or something. I got überbored playing it.

Anyways, now that we are on the topic of theme..
I'd like to see some fantasy. Like, a house built on a tree, a house IN a tree...
Magicians which could give you clues or special abilities (for a limited time, of course ),
etc.

So, we made the intro of the level, a first part of the vilage and the first 2 puzzles. I made some NPCs, the workman of the village and the mayor. We're starting to make the first 2 investigation scenes: the one were the "ghost" appeared, and the first crime scene (fully projected). Soon i'll post screens. Trip, your help wil be very appreciated, any thing that you can make will be helpful!2010-02-21 13:57:00

Hmm, sounds like it's coming a long nicely. Cant wait to play it eventually!

BTW in the OP it says you still need help here and there so if you even need some gameplay ideas or help with something else I am just a PM away (unless I am playing MAG of course, then it's different).

To help you don't have to be online the same time I am, you can simply make some objects and send them to me, make some puzzles, or give ideas in the forum group.
Ultimate, I'll be happy for your help too, can you show me something you made, so I can see your "Create Skills"?

Made something similar, we made the first 2 sketches I did, but we didn't make it yet. I know it can be very similar, but to save thermo e can't use so many stickers. Do you think you can give a hand? 2010-03-04 20:12:00

I think we have over 300 stickers in "Discworld" so dont worry,
you can also create new stickers from i.e. a sticker setup.
for instance, if you use a black sticker for sky, use star-shaped stickers for stars..
You might want to make a picture of it and use that instead.
(depending on size and quality) but it can really save you between a few up to 40 or more stickers.
Add me on psn and we can give it a try.

wont be on lbpc for a few weeks though.

I'm working on the 3d background, making many houses, so that the village effect will be very beautiful. Someone who uses well the 3D effect will be very useful! Then, I made the first investigation scene, where the phantom appeared, and the pursuit to the solution. I like how the village is coming up, and I'm making many NPCs, the atmosphere is one of the most important things in this level!2010-03-09 13:44:00

Oh, that's the spirit Well, I think my PS3 won't be back before a week, so you have time to create. Well, NPCs will be cool, you can look at the drawings or see some picture of Prof. Layton, I like quite cartoonish NPCs, that will fit well in the atmosphere of the level. Some 3D will be very useful too, some buildings like the ones in the screenshoots, an alley, some trees, use your imagination, looking at your levels I can see that you have much of it! 2010-03-24 20:18:00

Hey a quick suggestion for your level, from the photos on the 1st page of this thread, it looks like you are going to implement background buildings to make the town appear realistic. I have a great suggestion for you, go to this thread thats was created by TheAdipose https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=22765-How-to-use-the-3D-layer-glitch-video-tutorial! It has a great way of putting objects into the 3d background. What you could do with this is make several buildings that will be used as the background buildings and use this useful way to put them into the background. Good luck with the level series and hope you get your ps3 fixed soon! Peace! 2010-03-25 19:47:00

Oh great! Can you start trying Okisaan's level, and making some screens? I really want to see what he has done! Then, as I said to the others, you can just create what you want, NPCs, parts of the village, 3D buildings, puzzles... What you think it's helpful for the level.2010-03-29 17:40:00

Ok. Is there any tally of what is done, so I don't go around creating something we already have done? I don't seek to waste my time making something already made and in use, waste time arguing about it, waste your time by making you deliberate whether it should be included, and then in the end all of it becoming a headache.

So yes. Inventory would be nice. I'll try Okisaan's level.

Check the screenshots and the group thread to see what is already done. Some NPCs are always welcome, parts of the village such as houses, street lamps, roads, or some puzzle. You can make the inn where Edward and Leon sleep the first night: make the reception in the ground floor, and a room with 2 beds in the first floor, if you like to make it. 2010-03-30 14:18:00

Hey dude! I've been following this thread for some time and I think I could make some good contributions to it. I think I read that ducky was already working on the cat sense, I had an idea for it that uses a glitch u can get from the port royal house. I'm not sure what dlc you have but if you have the potc dlc the glitch I mentioned is an fairy light seperated from the light source it emmits. Basically you can have the fairy light somewhere hidden and the light source somewhere else. I was mentioned by Sehven in a thread and it's pretty impressive having a light source withouth the fairylight around. I could make some scenery parts as Im good with making scenery such as trees and foliage and stuff. I'm on LBP at odd hours so if you want, I would like to help

EDIT: I can post some pictures of Okisaan's level if ya want. I'll take some pics next time I'm on LBP

Please do some photos next time you're in LBP, maybe make some photos of what you create too and post them here, now LBPC is the only way I can check the progress of the project.2010-03-31 18:37:00

I just googled "retrieve data from my PS3" and got this (http://boardsus.playstation.com/t5/PlayStation-Tech-Central/HELP-How-can-I-recover-my-PS3-Game-Save-data-from-a-broken-PS3/m-p/35564689). I'm not sure how but I'm sure there is a way

EDIT: well... alot more people are saying it can't be done.

DOUBLE EDIT: maybe if you can get a external USB drive that uses the same type of hard drive you can replace the HD in it with the one from your old PS3 and just plug it into the USB slot on the new PS3. I've done this, not with PS3, but with other proprietary systems and it worked in most cases. as long as you plug it into a system that uses the same file system it should work.

It's worth a shot at least If you can get the right adapter. Here's one (http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=48965&doy=14m3&C=SO&U=strat15) that was mentioned in one of the threads.

EDIT:
The data in PS3's internal hard drive is per-PS3 encrypted, that's why you can't use it in another PS3 or PC without first formatting it, losing all data. External SATA or USB enclosures are no solution (SATA: does not change the situation at all, USB: PS3 only supports unencrypted FAT/FATX partitions on USB connected drives).

Oh, I just read it. Well, I think the only solution is checking if I have published a locked backup of the level, honestly I can't remember if i did it or not...
EDIT: I cant see that video: is it YouTube? If yes, can you simply say me the title of the video?

Mmm, bad news for me. I was quite sure about having another online backup... Well, that means that I must save my HDD.2010-04-03 21:43:00

You're already helping me making me feel not alone in this trouble . Anyway, I found a way to save the HDD and get a PS3 Slim. The only problem is that it will cost min. 200 €, and it will take a month. The only way to make the project go haed is in your hands. Who wants to create anything for the level feels free, when I'll be able to get onlne, I'll mix up all these parts toimprove the level. Ah, funny is thinking how a little yellow light makes all your projects blow up. And my Heavy Raon still is in the cellophane!2010-04-05 23:55:00

I am mainly focusing on scenery right now so if you need something that is some type of scenery, I'd be glad to help

Thank you! I'm working on a Door Puzzle now. It makes you open and close several doors at the same time, corresponding to the colour on the floor.2010-04-08 09:42:00
