Open Ocean

Archive: 10 posts

This is a level I have been wanting to do since I heard that water was coming out "soon." It's an open ocean level that uses just nearly the entire level space! I have already gotten the level borders and darkness with depth finished and now all I need are some nice creatures, some friendly and some evil. I may also need a good boat to start on. Kinda like a small Yacht or something that doesn't move. I will release it as soon as I get some fish in it. If anyone has any creatures or tips on making some that don't float or sink, I could really use some help! Thank you for reading!2010-01-25 04:32:00

I hope it's nothing like that movie, Open Water, that was a major bore!

Regarding the fish, if you don't want to tether them down with ropes, pistons or whatever, you need to get the correct balance of a floating material and a sinking material. I heard 50% metal, 50% wood should work. There are some threads about material weights and water physics in the Help section, have a look at those.

I made the entire ocean part and have only used up the little ball at the bottom of the thermometer. I am planning to fill the level with plenty of creatures and hope it won't be boring.

The problem with the water patch is that everything either sinks or swims. I'm not aware of any materials with the same density as water.

But that doesn't mean you can't be successful in filling your ocean with critters. The trick is to tether things to solid surfaces using stiff pistons or rods, or winches. I do this throughout my sea section in Fireball Island. Fish are made to "swim" using invisible stiff pistons. My dolphins are on invisible rods attached to a hidden rotating block. My jellyfish... are a secret (hah!) but a hint is by using connectors in innovative and INVISIBLE ways, you can generally do anything underwater.

The link to Fireball Island is in my sig - it might give you some inspiration. Good luck!

I know it is POSSIBLE to make a real swimming fish (that shark everyone keeps making identical levels with) I just needed some ideas now on making critters. I can also make creatures that stay in a certain depth because the level has several bars of invisible dark matter across the level to put global water/light switches on. They could also hold pistons =32010-02-01 07:21:00

I have tried this, and i eventuaally worked out the correct Ratio. 6 Small grid squares of metal for every 9 of wood is the perfect balance. It's quite difficult with more complex shapes though - I usually balance my creatures through trial and error.2010-02-01 22:47:00

one big rule...DON'T FORGET THE CORAL...thats a first lol....and maybe have some starfish, crabs (nobody seems to use them underwater so it would be something unique about your level) maybe using the LIVE FISH object that Mm has in your pop-it, also maybe have some nice creature that you dont see often...like an octopus or an eel.

hope that helps

Sorry I was grounded for having failgrades and wasn't able to reply for several weeks.

@SatansPit
Thank you. I will remember these for when I get on tomorrow =)

@Shadowcrazy
I will try to make some swimming fish objects that have more than one piston. I think it's annoying to see people use just a piston and end up having the front and back ends of the fish floating up as if it's dead! Also I will get my brother to help me with coral, he's a good designer.

@Ainsl3y_xo
Thank you!

I have a sandworm made (a worm that hides in the sand and occasionally pops up trying to kill you)

You can have it if you want.
