Abdullah's Challenge Emporium [Medium] by Pete1991

Archive: 15 posts

Sultan Abdullah is starting to run a little bit low on the money side of things, and so in a desperate attempt to get rich again, he has completely gutted out his old palace and turned it into a gameshow!

Can you become the first sackboy ever to clear the course, or will you become another pile of cotton in the torture chamber maid's sewing basket? Hop in and give it a try.

This is my first upload after many failed attempts and lots of crashed and bugged levels that have nearly had my PSP thrown at the cat many a time. I've tried my best with the aesthetics and I know they aren't amazing, but I think it gives the idea of the sort of setting I am after.

Yes I will be making a Easy and Hard in due time, but I currently have other commitments, watch this space though!

Thanks, Pete1991

Hey Pete1991!

I just downloaded the newest levels on the community moon and then I realised I had downloaded you level too!

But I liked the level. The level just looked amazing! Also the monsters were not hard to make, but they've got still that creepy radiation.
What I didn't like were the characters: I've already saw them in story mode and now I don't want too see them again
And maybe you could put some more checkpoints in the level? Also the end was (for me) a bit hard.

I'm looking forward to your next level.

Thanks Wouties, I tried making a character myself but it just wasn't happening and I didn't want it to ruin the look of the level, so I just played it safe. I might try a custom character for my next elvel, I'll cross that bridge when i get to it2010-01-25 15:15:00

It was a fun, tricky level. I can see some people getting frustrated in some parts, but personally I enjoyed most of it.

If that was the easy one, I don't know what is waiting for us in the hard level!

I liked the level too.
Visuals were good and the were some nice ideas in it.
You dont have to make it harder i think.
Its very straight forward and i think there could be more different challenges. Maybe add puzzles in the next one.
I gave it 4 stars.

This level is great! Like Lleonard said though, if this was the "easy" version I'd hate to see the hard one. Personally I thought the difficulty was just about right - moderately difficult overall and bordering on tricky in parts. If anything I'd say this was "medium".

Anyway, good visuals throughout and excellent corner editing work. Your use of pillars really makes the level seem to have more layers than it actually does. I thought your "safe" choice of story mode character stickers was fine and worked very well with the theme of the level. Speaking of the theme, I really liked it. It's sort of a Smash TV and Running Man meet the Prince of Persia or something like that. Playing as a contestant in a game show of sorts is a good idea, and you made good use of crowd noises to keep that idea going through all the platforming sections. Your use of stickers is good, both adding to the level's environment and also helping the player figure out what exactly they need to do next. Your humor was mild but well-placed, and I especially appreciated that aspect of your work.

There isn't much here for me to gripe about. A couple of the challenges are definitely not "easy", but I've already addressed that at the top of my post. You definitely need a checkpoint at the bottom of the grab winch / spinning wheel section. Because the wheels are more square-ish than round, they squish you about 50% of the time if you ride them all the way around. This makes the whole section far more tricky than it needs to be, and that much more frustrating when you need to go through the fire section again. Probably the easiest fix will be to corner edit a small amount of clearance into the walls on the left and right sides of the wheels to make them squish-resistant. Going briefly back to the fire section, call this personal preference but I think the lifetimes of your fire logs are just a little too long. I don't like how they land back in the "lava" and just sit there for a moment before dissolving. They'll look much better if they disappear right as they are about to touch the bottom. Finally, the descent through the gas was tricky but not impossible. The winches move too slow, making it slightly annoying and just a tiny bit boring.

This is a great effort and a really fun experience. I gave you 5 stars, a level heart, and a creator heart. Thanks for pushing through your problems with the PSP's create mode and publishing this for all of us to enjoy. It's a great level!

Thanks for the replies, Ill try tweaking some things and sort out the wheel problem and the speed of the winches on the final descent. thanks for the feedback

And I think I might change the name to [Medium] xD

sorry for double post but the level has been republished with people suggestions.
There has been a checkpoint placed on the second tower ascent, and the walls modified to make sure you don't get squashed on the wheels.
The winches on the Dark Descent have had 5 seconds chopped off their descent time, let me know if this needs decreasing further
The name has been changed to Abudullah's Challenge Emporium [Medium]

Thanks for the feedback, Pete1991

This level plays much better with your improvements - thanks for taking the time to fix the problem spots. Everything flows much nicer from one area to the next, and there isn't any one spot that stands out as having issues. The descent through the gas is still a bit tricky, but that's likely due to the fact that I'm rather uncoordinated this morning for some reason. Another 5 stars and a re-heart. Good stuff!

Oh, one last thing... You may want to update your thread title so people don't get confused looking for the [Easy] level when it's now [Medium].

Ah, yes that's an easy one to miss.

So, click 'edit post' and then click 'go advanced'. From there you will be able to edit the thread title as well as everything else.

I have re-published the level with 1 major addition

In the second tower, just at the end of the old torture chamber, I have added a race gate, this race ends at the end of the level, making it a race to get up to the top of the tower and down the Dark Descent as fast as possible

The time is set to 3 minutes and 18000 points are up for grabs.

I made this update to give it more of a gameshow feel, trying to beat others or your own previous score

Let me know what you think, Pete1991

PS: this is more than likely the final republish before I begin working on ACE[Hard].

I played the previous version and the level flows much better now: minor adjustments for a much more enjoyable experience. The race gate is a good idea!2010-01-28 16:27:00
