Marathon Level Building

Archive: 11 posts

Just thought of an idea. So in LittleBigPlanet for the PS3 we can have people working together to build a level. We've even got a contest going on with level building pairs.

So then the question comes up, what about the PSP version? Now, of course it's not possible for people to be working on a level at the same time, but it can still be possible to work on a level together. I saw some examples for this searching on the community moon just now. Apparently there is a level project happening where people are posting objects and even work in progress levels for other designated people to take and continue working on and use. (I won't give names for the people or levels that are posted because it's pretty obvious that this is their project and they don't want other people taking their work, which is still unavoidable once it's posted to the community moon but oh well.)

So then, how can this work? Well, there are a few ways.

As has already been mentioned, one of the easier ways is making and trading objects by posting them on the community moon. You can set up a password system into your level (A color-coded sequence, an unmarked sticker switch for a pre-specified sticker, etc.) which ensures that only the people working on the level can access it.

You can also help build entire sections of a level, but this gets more risky. If you want to do this then the level in progress will need to be set to copy. There's no way to protect this besides either just not caring if other people take it and post it as their own level, or designating a time where the level will be posted, downloaded by the other person, and then removed. This might not be as efficient as simply having some people working on objects while another person handles the actual level however. (And scenery pieces can be saved as objects anyways, although without the full level for the person currently making the new scenery it would be difficult to coordinate the pieces so they fit together.)

And of course there's simply trading ideas back and forth through a forum, PMs, Email, etc.

So then, here's the question. We have a pairs competition for the PS3 version, do you think this could work for the PSP version as well? Or, even without a competition, how about a level built by the entire community here at LBPC?

A level built by the community would of course require the riskier second method of posting the level in progress as copyable, but if it's a level made by a community of people then perhaps it could just be made for the experience rather than for any kind of recognition. And who knows, perhaps we would start with a level base and then other people could just branch off with their own ideas, and then branch off of the branches that other people have made... it just seems like it could be an interesting experiment in general. (And by other people I mean people here. Other other people would just repost the level as is since that's how they roll)

I dunno, just some things in my head. Does that sound at all interesting to anyone else?

Interesting? Yes!
But hard to coordinate i think...

Maybe we could make a first level thats split in different Areas. Every user that wants to create a part of it gets one Area for himself.

like this | user1 | user 2 | user 3 | and so on.
With this method everyone can take part without overwriting other stuff. Of course there has to be one person that makes the final polish and details. (so that everything matches together).

I like the idea - sounds like it could be fun.

Call it professional skepticism, but I personally would never, ever, ever post any level on the Community Moon as copyable. No matter how tightly you try to control it, you are guaranteed to get burned. Maybe I'm paranoid or maybe it's just because of my line of work, but I always assume everything will get hacked every time. (I know it really won't get hacked every time, but if you assume it will you make smarter decisions. )

I think the only practical method is to use adhocParty to transfer level save files. Alternately, if everybody uses the same exact crater on My Moon for the level, you can isolate the specific files needed and e-mail them to one another. It's a little tricky but not too bad.

It would be a smart idea to publish as copyable
then someone can copy it on your psn (becuase its not on the community moon yet, but it's on your psn "My Published levels")
Then delete it right away, and know one will know its was published in the first place 0.o

Transfer the level back and forth a few times with a friend and you're quickly over 100 views by people you don't know. I don't like those odds.

Actually I've noticed that there seems to be some lag between "publishing level" and "level shows up in new levels." So the level is still uploaded and online (you can find it in a search) but it still takes some time to make its way into newest levels.

That's entirely expected, which is why I was saying that for a community level you simply wouldn't care. If you're working on a level with a specific goal in mind then yes, publishing the level as copyable to the community is a fairly bad idea. For a marathon level though it just seems like people could take the level and change it / repost it at will and that would be fine. People from this community would be more likely to make changes to it, everyone else would simply republish it, but this is just a project for fun so it's not really a big deal. Just keep in mind that whatever you put into a marathon level would essentially become community property, so you might want to hold back some of your more interesting ideas.

Oh, and that also leads into the branching I was talking about. Someone could take the base, add to it, republish. Some else could either take the old base and add to it, making two alternate levels, or add to the newly updated level. And this could continue indefinitely with people simply making changes and eventually the level would be split into a multitude of variations. And if you don't want people changing your variation anymore then simply publish it as non-copyable and people can work on one of the older versions.

Of course there's issues, people will take the level and publish it as their own with no changes (this is expected, which is why I'd suggest not getting attached to the level) and this could also spam the servers depending on how it's handled. (Unless everyone stuck to a single updating version with older versions deleted from the community after being passed on)

Sounds like a fantastic idea! I would definitely take part if it happened.2010-01-23 21:00:00

If it happens... I probably would take part it

but we would need to be online at the same time 0.o

Well, looks like someone beat me to the punch. XD There's a community base level up now if anyone's interested in working on it more.
