Creator's Block... Feedback please!

Archive: 9 posts

So I just recently started working on my first official creation... You start out in pitch darkness, and after a few seconds you say something like "Am I dreaming?" Then the level lights up and you are in a small coffee shop. Outside it's raining (I used water and pistons to produce a rain effect) and on one side of the coffee shop there is a locked gate. On the other side is a back alley, which is where you find the key to the gate.

I brainstormed this idea while I was sitting in my classes at school (lol), but now I'm having creator's block... I don't know exactly what should be behind the gate... Some possibilities I've thought of have been a cemetery, a park, or a forest. I know this is my own level and it should be original, but I would love to hear some recommendations that might spark my imagination a little bit. Thanks in advance! :star:

(Also, what do you think of the level so far? Anything you think could make it better?)

Well, so far it sounds like it's got potential. I like how you described your opening sequence. Given that its a dream sequence, I think you should tweak the color correction to give you a washed out color palette (but not full black and white).

Really, anything could be behind the gate. My advice would be to create a plot/story for your dream sequence. Chances are, this will dictate what *should* be behind the gate. What is going on in your dream? What happens to you? What are you doing? What's your objective/goal? How will you reach it? Perhaps on the other side of the gate you meet someone who sends you on a task. If the person is an undead apparition of your grandmother who sends you on a quest to retrieve the bones of her late husband, perhaps it will be a cemetery. If the person is a crying child who has lost her cat in a tree, maybe it should be a park and the goal should be to get the cat out of the tree.

Hopefully this will provoke some thought and you can come up with something interesting. Having a plan will make the level much easier to create, trust me.

Sounds like you have an awesome idea coming on mate!

To make it all seem more dreamy etc, you could dip in and out of the dream. So you walk through the gate and wake up in your bedroom. You do some stuff in the real world, somehow get knocked out/go to sleep and return to the dreamworld through the gate. For ideas of what could be through the gate, check out Thegide's post above me ^^

LOVE the gides idea! You could be dreaming that you are a super hero and you save the cat from the tree, then you go and do good deeds for others XD2010-01-24 00:29:00

Just jot down an idea when you get one. I would help think of ideas but sadly I need to actually see the level first.2010-01-24 00:49:00

Take a break, then come back and make something great, you can't rush things. 2010-01-24 00:57:00

Do what authors do. Carry around a notebook! And jot down whatever comes to mind.2010-01-24 01:25:00

Maybe you could do a level about a creator's block. No really, the story of a sackboy who tries to find inspiration in a dark, dream-like world (that's starts out normal but gets more twisted as you progress). As for what's on the other side of the gate, I... uh... I don't know. You decide.2010-01-24 02:08:00

Have the dream coincide with real life. Like, what you do in a dream influences what happens in real life, ya know?2010-01-24 05:55:00
