Sackies' Inferno - Now for LittleBigPlanet 2!

Archive: 21 posts

Started work on a level series based loosely off on the Inferno portion in 'The Divine Comedy'. This will be my real level series, and not 'just for fun (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=20956-Bouncing-World%21)' ones (which I forgot about it, like the forgotten city of Atlantis (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=20446-Making-an-Atlantis-style-level-Ideas)).

EDIT: I will now put this series on hold until LittleBigPlanet 2 is released. I will probably need some of the new features it will offer. Also, there will no longer be a hub. Instead, I will make it a prologue level instead.

Sackies' Inferno will be split into 11 levels. One for a prologue level, 9 for the Circles of Hell themselves, and finally, 1 for the credits.

Here's a rough guide to the levels:

Prologue
Boss: Death (First encounter)
This is where you first start. You will get the back-story, where you (basically Dante, though you can be anyone, though the story assumes you are using a male Sackboy) have been playing the game's Story Mode, and only just made it through The Bunker. However, a hidden trap is sprung and your character is subsequently killed.

After dying, you meet with Death, the Grim Reaper who has come to take you to the afterlife. After you escape his clutches, you return home but witness your wife (Beatrice) getting kidnapped and taken to Hell. So what would you do? Fortunatly, your friend Charon (Told you this wasn't based entirely on the Inferno ) knows where the portal (one way only) to Hell is and takes you there on his boat...

First Circle of Hell - Limbo
Boss: King Minos
The calm before the storm (quite literary, see next Circle), Limbo has you enter through a large gate with the famous phrase "ABANDON ALL HOPE YE WHO ENTER". You will also meet Virgil, your guide (who is acually a jester, for humor purposes), for the first time. At the end, you will face off with King Minos, the Judgment of Hell.

Second Circle of Hell - Lust
Boss: Cleopatra
After King Minos' defeat, you and Virgil proceed to the first true area of Hell, where a violent hurricane blows lost souls endlessly while fierce lightning lights the skies. There, you will face puzzle solving in the gold tower, where Cleopatra awaits.

Third Circle of Hell - Gluttony
Boss: Cerberus
Welcome to a winter wonderland. Except it's not a wonderland at all. Here, snow mixes in with the ashes of the wasted food, which gruesome creatures feed off on. Your task is simple: obtain 8 bones to prove your worthiness. Only then, will you be able to fight Cerberus, the three-headed hell-hound, who's description "the great worm" is greatly exaggerated. Cerberus was once guarding the entrance to Gluttony, but he switched jobs and now he's guarding the exit instead.

Fourth Circle of Hell - Greed
Boss: Plutus
With the fall of Cerberus, you and Virgil proceed onwards to the Fourth Circle, where H4H spammers are punished, greedy for the 'Create' trophy. Creators of sinful Trophy Levels are also punished here. This place is overseen by Plutus, the Roman god of wealth, who dosen't appear to be himself.

Fifth Circle of Hell - Wrath
Boss: Fallen Angel
Halfway through Hell, you and Virgil reach the River Styx. There, you must convince Phlegyas to take you across. But some demons aren't too keen on allowing you to reach your destination, and the entrance to the city of Dis is guarded by a Fallen Angel, your toughest battle yet.

Sixth Circle of Hell - Heresy
Boss: Death (Second encounter)
Journey through a graveyard where heretics are consumed in their flaming tombs. After that, proceed through a black gothic cathedral like place with red stained glass windows and red rays of light shining and make your way through the "Gallery of LittleBigPlanet Villains", where hanging pictures of various villains and bad guys who harassed the LittleBigPlanet world are displayed. But beware! Death has heard of your exploits so far, and he will be more than happy to prevent you from reaching your goal: the next Circle.

Seventh Circle of Hell - Violence
Boss: Geryon
The most violent part of Hell is split into three areas, the first area has you fighting centaurs on bridges over lakes of what appears to be jam (Hell once had a jam factory nearby, but it exploded). The second area has you navigating tricky platforming areas on branches, trees who were people who had committed "Retry" once too many times. After that, you must make your way past several Bomb Survival fanatics before you face the winged monster, Geryon.

Eighth Circle of Hell - Fraud
Boss: All Malebolge Enemies Combined Together (claptonfann) (This is still undecided)
After taming Geryon, you and Virgil ride him down to the Eighth Circle of Hell. I am not too sure about this circle, but I might make all 10 Malebolges each with its own enemy. But this might depend, if I make all 10, they will have to be very small to fit the Thermometer space requirements.

Ninth Circle of Hell - Treason
Boss: Lucifer
This endless sea of frozen ice serves as the battleground for your ultimate encounter: Lucifer. Only then, if you can defeat the Prince of Darkness, then you may as well win Beatrice back, and your freedom.

Credits
If anyone is kind enough to contribute ideas, I may make a credits level to honor those who had helped.

This is just the planning stage. But is this a good idea?

Bump. To generate some interest in this, I will be posting some very early screenshots of Limbo, to prove that I will work on this.

http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=12429
The Gateway to Hell. To enter it, you will have to press up in front of it, like those old Super Mario games. Note that there's supposed to be "red swirly clouds" in where the black is. (Points to the in game camera tool )

http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=12430
And this is ... the other side. After a very smooth fade to black transition, you end up here. Note the board to the right. When you complete the level and use the First Circle sticker on it, you'll unlock the race with story elements removed.

First meeting with Virgil. Sackies' Inferno will borrow from my own inspirations as well. For example, here, Virgil is portrayed as a psychotic jester, who likes laughing and breaking the fourth wall.

Finally, here's King Minos. This is only a prototype of his form displayed here, I might make some changes. Also, he does not have any attacks implemented in him yet. So far, he can only move, but his opening dialogue is written. Also, note that there's supposed to be massive flames in the background. It's a shame, he looks cooler with it.

Alright. I will need some ideas for the main portion of Limbo. I already have the entrance down.

Basically Limbo is not that "hellish", although in my interpretation there is dead grass and trees with the odd spike pit here and there. However, I only have approximately 45% of the thermometer space remaining.

But the good news is that King Minos is fully functioning now with attacks. I only need to apply some finishing touches to him and then I'll have completed my very first boss battle on LittleBigPlanet. :hero:

Good news! I just bought Dante's Inferno, the new hack and slasher recently released, so I'll use that for most of my inspiration.

But, my levels will certainly not have the nudity or violent gory deaths present in the game. For example, the tower in my Lust will be a generic Ancient Egyptian theme, and not as depicted as what I think it is in the game, which I keep hearing about.

I like this idea! Maybe, for the hub, your stickers could also unlock something besides the keys? Just an idea.2010-02-21 19:08:00

Very nice so far, and I like the concept. For your signs, I would suggest creating your own font and numbers, then use those to make your words/messages and take a picture of them, which you could use in place of the letters/numbers in the Stickers popit. This was suggested to me on a level I made, and it does make a big difference in the polish of a level.

Something to consider.

I would recommend re-reading the cantos where Heresy and Fraud are talked about, and look for any major characters to use as a boss for those respective circles. Also, I agree with RickRock: using custom lettering will be a step in the right direction for your signs. Don't take too much from the video game unless you are creating a LBP tribute to it (as well as a tribute to the Divine Comedy's Inferno, obviously).

I look forward to the finished product I'm sure it will be exhausting, but still rewarding (even though you'll be eating up 11 out of the 20 slots for publishable levels...)

Great! I will try to find a custom font. Though I won't make one myself, it would be too much work.

I also updated most of the first post. Though, I'm still not sure how I would handle Fraud, even though it probably won't have a boss.

Maybe the "boss" for Fraud could be a crowd of enemies, made up of people from all ten malebolges?2010-02-22 19:57:00

I'm done with King Minos now. Can't wait for people to finally fight him. Yay! :hero:

The only problem now is that the main level itself is far from completion and I only have 40% of thermometer space remaining. AND I have to correctly make Charon who ferrys you to the Hell Portal. (He's already in, but he looks ugly. I will have to remake him).

Shall I make Limbo a short level, with no basic enemies? Hey, it's NOT the most punishing part of Hell, but some ideas and traps would do, right?

Actually, Fraud is still a long way away. It will take me months before I would reach that Circle. My plans may change as I progress.

If I don't die of boredom first.

Having enemies merge together to form a powerful monster sounds cool. But it depends if I have enough thermometer space... 2010-02-24 21:39:00

And Heresy is actually a pretty uneventful circle in the Inferno XD Dante talks to two guys and moves on. Perhaps Death itself is a good choice for that one.2010-02-24 21:50:00

I've already decided here that I wouldn't put in Satanic Imagery (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=22435-Imagery-regarding-Hell) (I've decided on the Sigil of Lucifer, which is less known).

Besides, I won't put in extreme gore or nudity (enemies would dissolve like normal when defeated). And besides, some levels using minor "blood stain" stickers are still out there. (The Terrible Oni's Volcano comes to mind)

I just beaten Dante's Inferno! :hero: I defeated the ... um ... final boss and now I'm done. Although I was disappointed with how Fraud was depicted, though.

Fraud was nothing more than 10 special challenges that required you to do special actions, like stay in the air for 7 seconds or get a 100 chain combo.

Now, to finish off on my Limbo...

Bump. This project is not dead. It has not gone to Hell (pun!). I have been away from LBP for quite a long while.

This project is now on hold until LittleBigPlanet 2, so I could use some features that would be benifical (Sackbot NPCs, for example) Also, some level explanations have changed. Gone is the hub and now I will have a prologue instead. See first post.
