Want to take your console on an airplane? Think again.

Archive: 20 posts

Consumerist reader Adam thought it was safe to take his Xbox 360 on a plane with him. He'd received assurances from US Airways that it was. Uh, no. It wasn't. Upon landing, Adam says he opened his luggage and found his Xbox 360 had been cracked open. He also found inside his luggage something he didn't put in there: a small ziploc back. Full of "tiny metal components". Components that used to be inside his Xbox 360, which was of course now completely busted.
Contacting US Airways for a "please explain", Adam was told "tough luck"; seems security suspected something was up with the 360 (even though it must surely be a fairly common item), and security feels it has no need to explain itself.

This is awful, I mean, seriously. This is almost as bad as when some security guards blew up and shot some woman's laptop for no reason whatsoever.

You should never carry electronic equipment or valuables in anything other than your carry-on luggage anyway. It only takes one dishonest/thieving airport employee to ruin your trip, and trying to get the airlines to reimburse you for your losses is an uphill battle.2010-01-21 19:50:00

Aw man that's hard luck. Why didn't they just tell him to leave it at home? Think in that situation I'd just bombard them with letters til they relented and paid for a new one. They're going pretty cheap these days.

Luckily the PS3 is the size of a small African nation so I won't be moving it anywhere anytime soon, so I'm safe.

If it was bad luggage handling that broke it then i would of understood, but the security busted it open? xD

Easiest is to carry it on with you or just ship it to yourself. When I check baggage, I do it while trying to imagine I will never see it again. 2010-01-21 22:30:00

I don't take my consoles on flights, they take me. And if security tried to open me up, i'll shout 'rape' and then kill them.

Simples.

Hate to be devil's advocate, but I would rather have someone a busted PS3 over finding out in the news that some plane blew up due to an altered PS3 system rigged with C4.

To be honest, I suspect it would be extremely unlikely for that to happen, but the PS3 is cheap in comparison doncha think?

Carry personal electronics on as carry on or ship them to you. Don't check them!!!

I think they made it pretty clear in the sign above the guy when electronics will be inspected. It's kind of logic sense, unless they make it easier to understand:

All XBox360s and PS3s will be busted during the flight. We hope to see your misery. : )

That'll make my day.

But ya, they're real jerks for doing that to the guy.

...."Psssst. Duuuuude..."
"Wt* is it now?!"
"Uh, yeah... see that bag over there..."
"Yeah, yeah I see it- god*******, we see bags all the time!!"
"Yeah, I know... that one's gotta 360 in it, though..."
"Woah-woah-woah-wait. You mean that kid's really..."
"Mmhmm. He sorta sounds familiar too..."
"Familiar?! How the he-"
"Shhh-shh-shh-shhush. He's that same n00b who sniped me the other day on MW2..."
"... Oh H*** no. Really?"
"Yeah... y'know what I wanna do..."
"Mmhmm... keep talkin'..."
"We'll just say we were a lil'... 'suspicious', hmm?"
"Sure, sure... blamin' it on the company- Y'know how much trouble that'll cause?!"
"Who cares... that kid sniped me... I'm gettin' back at that lil' punk-a**..."
"Go ahead, dumba**. I'm stayin' here..."
"Heh-heh... if you insist..."

If I had the choice, I'd definitely carry all of my electronics in my carry-on. Leavin' it in your luggage just spells trouble. But then again, why would I bring an Xbox on a flight?

Really, i understand why they'd be worried...but at least they could not damage the hard drive...that has however many hours of your life invested in it...that getting destroyed is not fair, nor just.2010-02-09 23:13:00

This is why I carry the hard-drive seperatly from the console so all my precious game data is safe just incase the console gets into tricky business!2010-02-10 03:39:00

I don't really get how it broke. At first I thought it was the air pressure causing cracks in it, but from reading the responses, I realised it wasn't (yay me being dumb). Did the baggage people open the bag and break it? Or was it just careless 'let's just chuck the bags on without a care what's inside them' thing?

Also, @Smelling-Cowboy, you've made me never want to put my DSi anywhere other than my hand luggage ever again.
