do you draw your levels?

Archive: 37 posts

before i ever start making a level, i draw what it is going to look like. i find this to be verry helpful when im making a huge or verry colorful one.

i was just wondering if anyone else does this to help them with there levels.

(i also do this so i can know how my sack is going to look if i make a new costume. :3)

If my drawing skills weren't so abysmal I probably would. I sometimes sketch out designs for objects or rooms, but anything I'm likely to put down in pencil I usually just go to create mode and do it there. No sense duplicating work and my artistic eye is far more keen in create mode anyways.2010-01-20 18:09:00

I usually don't. When it comes to creating, i think in sections or "scenes". I pretty much have the scene on my mind all the time. I think of a cool scene that I want to show in my level and then I just wing it between sections. In my last level tho, I've found sketching very useful. Specially in areas that a lot of stuff is happening at the same time. That's just me tho!2010-01-20 18:14:00

Most of the things I have sketched are mostly platforming ideas or possibly a puzzle of some sort. I am not really one to sketch out the whole level. If there is a quick sketch of the entire level, it is mostly just to figure out where parts go to line up properly.

In fact, my WIP is being mostly done in workshops to create the enemies, rooms, sections, and the transitional parts that get you there. I still do design a few minor bits in the level, just nothing really complicated and nothing that moves! All moving bits are torture tested in workshops before ever landing in the level keeping my level time line safe and happy from the 160 hour bug.

Most of the time actually in level creation is decoration and lighting as well as pulling in the next section and tidying up the transitions. ..and all of that is in pause mode with some "gravity checks" followed by a rewind even if things are OK!

I just get in there and go....face first into a brick wall. I've tried drawing out my level on paper but...I just don't work that way! Maybe I should try again. Might help...might hinder.2010-01-20 19:09:00

I sort of have 3 stages of preperations when I plan a level.

At first I will list things I want to do and decide the overall theme. Just writing them down so I don't forget.
Then I will proceed and draw gameplay elements. All the elements I'd like to incorporate in the level.
Lastly I start drawing the layout of the level, basically map it and trying to incorporate as much stuff as I can from my ideas.

When all of this is done, I start producing the whole thing, simply following my plan (and well, you always make tons of modifications on the go but yeah, planning still save ALOT of time).

I sketch out specific scenes from mine sometimes. Like on the 5th of the CS series the hub area I had to map out to get it to work right, and on my dragons of Egypt I knew I wanted a scene with the giant Anubis statue staring sackboy in the eye from a high ledge. Most everything else in my levels I build as I go.2010-01-20 19:36:00

If thats what you call "notes" jump, I'd love to see your real drawings.

For me, no, never draw, just create, and its turned out well so far.

I've drawn some logic when I haven't been on LBP but still wanted to create something like an elevator.
I haven't drawn any of the levels I've published but I am working on some drawings for my next big project, which will be awesome btw

I've made one level so far and am in the process of making a second, but on both levels I've put some things down on paper. My first level was a multipath one, so I basically made a bubble chart listing what the different paths were going to be. I then drew some basic concepts for some of the characters. And for the level I'm working on now I just drew some sketches of what some of the different settings could look like. (Nothing detailed just a general idea).2010-01-20 22:00:00

Im drawing as we speak! Only cos im at uni... if i were at home id be right on lbp

But seriously, if ur levels are drawn out first, it saves so much time creating, scrapping and rebuilding it all... I managed to complete Planet X in 5 days just cos id had it all drawn out first!

Now back to work... i'll draw this 3-part series out and then in about 2 months time, I should know exactly how to build it!

I'll draw a puzzle or idea if it hits me while I'm not playing LBP. I've tried drawing out the whole level, but I'd rather just wing it.2010-01-21 02:12:00

i usually do three things:

1. draw the level out.
2. show what i want in it (like a specific enemy or object)
3. i usually add some stuff.

and then i finally make my level.

Not only do I draw out several aspects of my level and creations, I create a detailed outline of the premise and flow of the level, and the game play I want to include.

Y'know, if I did draw my levels, they would NEVER look like my drawing. So, I just go where my brain takes me and just create whatever pops into my head... but then I never publish the level.2010-01-24 03:51:00

I don't draw the whole level, but I sketch just some gameplay sections or elements, characters or scenery design.

It helps visualizing things before really making them in create mode, and I usually stick to what I drawn, even if all the ideas don't make it in the final level...

For example, some (bad) drawings in my sketch book, when I started the gypsy circus level

Don't draw, but constantly jot down notes with random ideas that strike me. I have a notebook I started pretty much the first day LBP came out, and it's about 60% full (front and back most pages)

I don't ever wanna forget an idea, and I find writing them down helps lead to more ideas.

EDIT: Actually, I forgot I do sometimes draw ideas I get for Cause And Effect levels, sometimes it's just easier that way.

yeah.. my brain is always kinda in create mode and when i get ideas for my levels, i dont always have the ps3 handy.. hehe.... so i quite frequently write down notes or sketch out ideas on various scraps of paper ... i'v also apparently started a little collection of different envelopes containing all the notes for each individual level.. figured they might come in handy some day... even if just for fun in showing to friends 2010-01-24 11:54:00

I made a few rough notes, sketches and diagrams for the Gothic Reverie series, but there was no planning at all in my latest level, Tenement. This time I decided to work organically and let my subconcious mind guide the creation process, which produced some very bizarre and disturbing results. I'm reluctant to ever unlock it, since I'm pretty sure the community would be grabbing their pitchforks and hauling me down to the bonfire. I think I might play things safe next time and map the entire level out before I start building it.

Or maybe I'll just make a Peppa Pig level instead.

sketching is good when you wanna make an enemy or just part of a level.

but i draw out a whole level when i need to know where things need to be.

Here are a couple of drawings I've made about my newest project... hopefully, it'll give u an idea of how i plan the theme and detailed sections of the levels! Plus it'll give a little glimpse of my newest project:2010-01-28 18:09:00

I dont draw my levels at all.. I just have all these ideas in my head and when im creating they just seem to flow out into a big mess!

Although if I wanted to create something that looks relistic, I'd look photos off the internet and convert it into LBP.

I plan everything out in my head when im at home, then i make a rough draft of my level when i get home. Then i take a couple hour to polish it all up.2010-01-30 17:00:00
