Switches...

Archive: 9 posts

Hi, I'm new to LBP (Bought it about 2 days ago) and I'm having a little trouble with switches. Apparently, you can't use a switch to activate other switches, which throws a wrench into my plans.
What I want to do is make it so that if you press button #1 it will perform one action, but if you press button#2 then button#1 it will perform a different action. Is this possible to do, and how would I be able to do it?

Also, how can I make a switch that alternates? For example; press it once and it will extend a piston to full length then stop. Press it again and it will retract the piston completely then stop. I can only make it so that as long as you stand on the button it will keep extending and retracting.

Thanks in advance.

Well, I'm not sure exactly what you're asking about "button #1" and "button #2" but I can answer your 2nd question. Use a 2-way switch (the one you can pull back and forth) and set it to "Directional" instead of "On/Off". Also, for some more complex ways of using switches, be sure to go to the Logic Pack forum here on LBPC, and then check out those levels the next time you're on LBP. They can be copied to your moon so you can have the huge variety of complex switch mechanisms at your fingertips. I'm no expert creator, but I hope this helps you out....2010-01-20 05:55:00

Thank you for the quick reply, I'll make sure to check out the Logic Pack forum.

I think I may have figured out a way to make my first question work, I'll go and give it a try and come back.

I do also have another question however. How would you make a switch reset back to its default state over time/slowly? Example: Press a button which extends a piston and then the piston will slowly retract (regardless of whether someone is still standing on the button or not) until it reaches its original length. After the piston reaches its original length, if the button is pressed again it will repeat.

EDIT: No, I still can't figure out how to get my first question working, so I'll try to explain it better.
Example: Stepping on a button (called button#1) will cause bombs to appear and you get killed. But if you go and step on a different button first (button#2) then step on button #1, instead of it creating bombs and killing you, it will cause a door to open.
Is this possible?
(not sure if that's easier or harder to understand >.<)

Yes it is possible, but right now I got no good time to explain.2010-01-20 06:57:00

Yeah, I hate that you can't do this. You need to make (or borrow/use) AND and OR switches.

What I want to do is make it so that if you press button #1 it will perform one action, but if you press button#2 then button#1 it will perform a different action. Is this possible to do, and how would I be able to do it?
Use a pair of AND switches (available from the Logic Pack, or created yourself something like this:

[ ]======b-----[MS]
[MK]-----a======[DM]
[ ]======c-----[MS]
where MK=Mag Key, DM=Dark Matter, and MS=Mag Switch.

Make the pistons Stiff, and the blocks on the ends of them out of cardboard. Use a permanent switch for switch #2, set to Directional and attached to both pistons (b) and (c), with one of the two set to Backwards. Then switch #1 can be set to Directional and attached to piston (a). The when you step on #1, the Mag Key [MK] moves in and whichever of the Mag Switches [MS] is retracted is the one that will go off (bombs or doors).

Also, how can I make a switch that alternates? For example; press it once and it will extend a piston to full length then stop. Press it again and it will retract the piston completely then stop. I can only make it so that as long as you stand on the button it will keep extending and retracting.
The logic pack has two toggle switches that are very useful. They are difficult to explain in this medium - sorry.

Use a toggle switch (again - Logic Pack is your best bet for this). Extend with a piston, retract with a winch. Just make sure that the winch is set to slightly stronger than the piston. When the piston is at full extension, have it trigger a Mag Switch that activates the winch. The speeds can vary between the piston and the winch, so one will go faster than the other. This works because winches can only PULL, whereas pistons PUSH and PULL. I think that'll do it.

That green is awfully unreadable.

You can indirectly have a switch activate other switches, a switch that moves or emits keys will activate the keyswitch. There some good examples - use the following search text "emitters and demitters", there are 2 examples of cascading switches. I cannot think of others off the top of my head that are as good as those two for learning from.

Search the forum for the calculator and play that level, although it is far too complicated for you to learn from directly you should be able to get a big sigh of relief from going there as you will know the instant you see cthulhu that what you want is possible!

It is an awesome piece of engineering if I do say so myself.

If you like, I can send you most of the tools that you need. You'll need to send me a friends request on PSN first though, otherwise I have no way to gift you anything. I'll be going online shortly so I should be able to send you the stuff tonight.2010-01-20 20:34:00

Sorry for the late reply.
Thanks for all the help everyone, I did manage to get all the switches working!

The Logic Pack is extremely helpful!
