New Style!

Archive: 204 posts

After days (yeah, it only took a few days) of hard work, we've finally finished the new LBPCentral forum style! Now, our hope was to design something that both looks good visually and had flow, so we made sure to retain a lot of the structure that vB4.0 offers. It's just got a fresh new coat of paint (no pun intended). As always, we welcome your feedback in regards to any potential changes you may have in mind. Thanks for bearing with us, and enjoy the new look! 2010-01-19 05:33:00

Dang! That was instantaneous! XD (I click away for a minute and just look what happens)

Looks good, but then that's just a first impression.

CC, it looks great, man! You did a fantastic job!!

Wowzer!

Edit: If I may be nitpicky, the username bar at the top is a little out of alignment, but glad you went with the tab!

Yes! Yes! Yes! Euphoria! Thank you so much CC, mrsupercomputer, and others who might have helped design this new layout. I just knew it would come someday...better than the previous design, but I never imagined for it to be this great!

Thanks! All that waiting was certainly worth it!

I like it - but I'm saying that almost entirely on the basis of the smiling sackboy-head icons on all the sub-forums now.2010-01-19 05:39:00

Ok now that's what I am talking about!!!

Will their be sackboys head on threads? It would be cool to see a new icon replacing the defaults one.

We could have a smiling sackboy when there's new messages in a thread and unhappy sackboys when there's no new post. A cute RIP tomb icon for locked threads would be awesome.

The more I look at it the more I like the fack it's the default icon for the threads. I dunno if my suggestion holds anymore. If ever there's a custom icon coming, it should be different than sackboy's heads.2010-01-19 05:48:00

I'm not? Did I go somewhere? *Looks around confused*

Oh, one thing I forgot to mention in my last post. This skin actually seems similar to the standard skin that the site just had, which is great for newcomers like me who didn't experience the old site at all. We get a cool LBP theme and there's no discombobulatin' jarrin' changes to go through.

*Lives in Kansas btw*

View people's threads? You can view someone's threads by clicking on their username and selecting the "View Forum Threads" option. Or did you mean something else?

When the posts/page has to extend more, the paint scheme will be hard to get to repeat and make it still look great and consistent. Besides the focus at the top is all about the site layout and navigation and when you are scrolling down you're focusing more on the post and the reading. You don't want all sorts of colors distracting the reader from the subject.

I know it's not a big problem but there was another post (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=21533-New-Style%21&p=374131&viewfull=1#post374131) about not having color at the bottom. I just wanted to clarify the functionality of the design. So that people will understand the workings of art&design and how to get a person to redirect their focus/attention to a certain area/subject. Which in return, give them a second opinion of the cardboard with no color at the bottom and the understanding the brilliance behind the works.

Great job on the new style! However I do have some constructive criticism for ya:

- I think the paint splats are a little bold and they can be a little distracting sometimes.

- It would be better if the paint splats continued down the whole page.

- I think the categories section to the left of the blog on the homepage should be removed so the blog can take over the whole page and stand out more.

- Maybe it would be good to have links to the community spotlight and the creator spotlight in the navigational bar with the blueprint background.

Thanks for taking the time to read my suggestions

I gotta be real honest... while I like this WAY better than the generic vBulletin skin, and it's definitely more LBP-ish than the old, pre-upgrade skin(s), I really don't care a whole lot for all this pink. Some of it would go a LONG way. It's just too much. And the paint splats? OK - Again, very LBP-ish... but aesthetically unappealing to my tastes. Sorry if I'm alone in this, and I know I proclaimed it's merits earlier in this very thread, but it's just not growing on me. In fact, just the opposite... the more time I spend here the less I want to look at it all.

You all know I love this place, so I'll just grin and bear it.

Sorry (nuttin' personal Mr.SC and CC - just MHO).

Please acknowledge this moderators: Choosable "main" text color would be a godsend. I really can't stand pink.

Actually, that's not a bad idea. There are some design issues that come along with a non-solid-color-background for content that is of variable size (namely, how do you get the blue grid to look consistent regardless of size?), but I'll look into it.

Fabulous new look you guys! I love it! Thank you for all your hard work.

A quick question though. Sorry if this has already been answered in another thread. Will we ever be able to customize our profile pages the way we used to? And if not, I'm just curious as to why.
This is a feature that wasn't considered necessary in the first releases of vB4.0, but it is planned to be included in future releases, which we will upgrade to eventually. Keep in mind: since these will be incremental upgrades and not completely new software, we will not have to go through the rigamarole that we had to go through for the 4.0 upgrade. It will be extremely easy in comparison.

Looks amazing! I love it!

The only thing I'm not sure about is the nav bar, I think the text would look better in Omnes (the LBP font).
There is a big problem with rounded fonts and the default Windows font smoothers, so we avoided any smooth fonts for in-browser text. We tried many different "smooth" fonts and on Windows, they all looked rough around the edges. Mac does a much better job with font display, but we have to design for the majority, so we picked that font instead.

1) When it comes to design decisions, we're pretty hard-set in what we've come up with. We worked hard to make sure that once you got down to the nitty-gritty content, the paint splats were not bright and did not distract from the forum as a whole. The goal was to set the tone of the site when someone loads the page, and then allow them to continue on to the relevant content when they would like to. I apologize if you find the paint splats too distracting, but I don't think we're going to change much from here on out (aside from efficiency fixes).

2) Wait, so you find the paint splats distracting, but you want more of them? In any case, when it comes to adding more paint splats, we have three options:

a) Make the main background image longer vertically. The problem with this solution is that it makes the page load much more slowly, since you have to load the entire image before it will display.
b) Add more images under the main background that continue the paint splats. The problem with this solution is similar to the above: more images equals more bandwidth to load, which means the page loads more slowly. This is also something we want to avoid.
c) Tile an existing paint splat image repeatedly, so there are always paint splats on the sides. There are two reasons we didn't go with this option: It looks like poor design (with something as random as paint splatters, you'll pick up repetitive patterns very quickly), and it causes more distraction of the eyes.

As I mentioned earlier, the goal was to impress the user, then allow them to move on to the content and disregard the colors. This meant we had to end the splats somewhere, so we chose to end them fairly early.

3) We only have limited space, so we don't want to clutter up the navbar with everything. We post Notices about that content when it releases because we want to allow users to close the notice once they have decided they no longer care about what it wants them to view. We're aiming to give the user more control over their experience, so that means avoiding hard-set links when we can go with something more dynamic.

same here...and i have a go...only way i can view is getting rid of everything and conserving memory!
We're looking into reducing page load, but keep in mind LBPC is not designed for any handheld platforms. It is a site intended to be viewed on a computer - any other options are not (and will never be) officially supported.

It's a little to bright and bold and the paint splats should go all thw way down. That I agree with.

But I think we could have more kinds of banners at the top and more detailed one.

Still, nice
I addressed your first two concerns in my responses above. As to the banners, we have a cycle of fifteen LBP banners going through at any given time. We are looking to add more, and we may at some point re-open header submissions to accumulate more headers. We'll let everyone know if and when we do so.

Aw, I really dislike the pink. What if you're able to choose the color of the text of forum section titles and navigation bars? Please! That'd be an amazing feature.
I actually think that's a fairly good idea, but the way vBulletin is coded, I don't expect anything to surface that would fill that need. In the meantime, have you looked into Greasemonkey (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/748)? It allows you to customize a ton of elements on a website with just a few simple scripts. If you're not familiar with scripting (it's easy, but I understand if you're not), there's thousands of scripts on Userscripts.org (http://userscripts.org/) that accomplish a myriad of tasks, and you could easily learn to write up a simple script that would change the color of links on our site.

Let me be clear, though: I have no plans to support this method in any way. Consider it a friendly tip, not an official workaround.

I don't have firefox, I use chrome.

Why pink out of so many colors though? I really think most people here don't like it, simple as it is.

I'm not sure where you've got that from. By the looks of this thread the lean seems to be towards "loving" the new style. I don't see the pink as an issue - it's clearly defined from body text and background colour and has a mouseover style. What more could you ask for?

The only thing that's bugging me ATM is the default serifed font on my linux box (that was the same before the update, but now it screws with the menus) and there is a bug with the ratings in the blogs - it changes between when viewing the summary of the blogs and the actual blog itself.

I actually like it quite a lot. The one thing that bothers me is how the website's background doesn't blend at all with the meat of the site. (The white part and the paint splattered background are a big change, and it seems kind of random)

Nice work!

Alright, I managed to drop about 2MB from the background image without too much quality loss. I also fixed the issue with the background image sometimes being misaligned behind the profile information (the stuff at the very top of the page). I opted for CSS instead of embedding it into the actual header, which should fix any of the issues people have been having.

I like the new style. However, there are a couple of things that bother me. Both the "What's New?" link at the top and the "New Posts" link just underneath it lead to the same page. I think it might be worthwhile to remove one of the two to have a little bit more space.

Also, the "Thanks!" frame seems much bigger than it used to be and I think it could be made shorter to save a bit of space (I often find myself scrolling down a thread and thinking I'm on the last post because of the large gap left between a thanked post and the next one).

Of course if no one else is bothered by these, or it's too complex to change, I'm willing to ignore those issues.

Yes, Media Molecule use a lot of pink...
Pink should not be considered as girly or stuff like that, but more as a pop, modern and fun color.

So it doesn't bother me, I think it look nice and noticable, and I don't see other colors really fitting better... (...maybe orange can work too...)

Now it's more a matter of each one personnal taste, so it would be very difficult to please everyone

I'm pretty indifferent I honestly don't see how it could cause a problem. From a slightly more objective veiwpoint, the colour is highly visible (important for links and navigation), fits with the rest of the theme and has strong associations with the subject matter of the website. But it's pink....

No concerns really. I just dont care for the look. The background and the actual content of the site just dont work for me, but this site is not just for me. The top graphic, torn graph paper and background have a fun, carefree LBPish look and the rest looks like something from a more serious site pasted right on top. They just don't mesh IMO.

Just seeing the LBP skin instead of the vBulletin logo has made my day. I need to wait for the euphoria to wear off before I can judge it objectively. Thanks for the hard work, CC!

That being said, one major critique I have is that I no longer have screenshots from my levels included in the rotating background images for the site banner. As I understand that the dimensions for background images are likely different now, I will attempt to remedy this problem immediately by offering up new eye candy levels for new pictures.

5) I'm not sure if you've noticed, but the "Thanks" text now appears under the Post-Bit instead of the Post. ie, when someone clicks "Thanks!" and it comes up with that person's name under the post to show that they have given the thanks it's way over there <- instead of there V To me, it looks wrong, plus, if only one person thanks it then the post just looks like it has a big box below it, unless the user specifically looks to the left, which they are unlikely to do.

OH MR. CARTMAN, SIR, SIR, I FOUND MORE!

Ah, I see. I tried to find it by trying stuff on a blank document, but found that the t's are different from arial rounded. But the photoshop font tweaks explain that.

By the way, I'm not just randomly asking about fonts and I do have a reason to want to know such things

I'm making an alternate stylesheet for the site, like I do with many other sites, to fit my tastes.

I guess that's a detail I won't be able to reproduce, as the computer with photoshop is currently about 95 miles away

I guess I don't really want to use that font now that I think about it lol

1, 2) Hmm, that is odd. Chrome is such a fickle browser. I'll look into remedying the problem.
3) That's a core piece of vBulletin functionality and not something I'm comfortable changing now (seeing as there will be many maintenance releases in the next couple of months to fix issues). Once the vBulletin developers decide they're happy with the stability and functionality of 4.0, I'll start making more fundamental changes, but as of now I'd rather wait and see what they fix officially.

EDIT: I looked into the Thanks box issue and it looked normal to me. Under the post, as usual. Is your version of Google Chrome out of date? As to the second issue, I can't for the life of me find out why that's there, but I have posted a troubleshooting thread on the vB4 forums about it, so I expect some info within the next day or so.

I don't know if anybody is interested in this, but if you use the Stylish plug-in for Firefox, here's a (very simple) style sheet that makes all of the pink text orange (along with a lot of other text, cause that makes it easier to do and it looks cool in my opinion).

Just make a new style sheet in the Stylish plugin and add the CSS:

@namespace url(http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml);

@-moz-document domain("lbpcentral.com") {
.navtab {
color: #FF6600 !important;
}
body a {
color: #FF6600 !important;
}
#pagetitle img {
visibility:hidden !important;
}
#pagetitle{
background-image:url('http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=11905&apos !important;
}
}

@-moz-document url-prefix("http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/showthread") {
#pagetitle{
background-image:none !important;
}
}

@-moz-document url-prefix("http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/blog") {
#pagetitle{
background-image:none !important;
}
}

@-moz-document url-prefix("http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/search") {
#pagetitle{
background-image:none !important;
}
}

@-moz-document url-prefix("http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/newreply") {
#pagetitle{
background-image:none !important;
}
}

@-moz-document url-prefix("http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/forumdisplay") {
#pagetitle{
background-image:none !important;
}
}
There, so no more complaining about the pink, ok?

Edit: there's one problem with it, I'm fixing it
fixed!

I noticed two problems with the PS3 internet search and LBPC.

The password bar and username bar and squished together and look like one typing space. It's more annoying though because you can still log in.

When I try to upload exported PS3 pictures to my lbpc album from my PS3 and click on the green "upload pictures" tab it just redirects me to the forum.

I'll say it again: we do not officially support any browsers other than Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome, Safari, or Opera. If a browser does not render the page in a similar way to one of those five browsers, then it is not up to the standard of the general internet. The PS3 browser is one of those browsers, and we have no plans to re-code portions of the site to work around it. In our eyes, it's Sony's job to provide a browser that supports modern code, not the other way around.

I would expect that that's how most people upload their pictures here, or at least a lot of them. Just reconfiguring album uploading would help a lot of people.

Actually, that's not a bad idea. There are some design issues that come along with a non-solid-color-background for content that is of variable size (namely, how do you get the blue grid to look consistent regardless of size?), but I'll look into it.

I was thinking have:

White paper image at the top as if its been ripped (as one image) and then a white block underneath (so its easy to repeat). Maybe a ripped paper image at the bottom if it looks too plain?

Also I agree with Oli about the news section. It doesn't seem to go with your really nice theme overall.

Thanks for replying by the way.

I'm loving the new creator/community spotlight banners, btw.

I have been very quiet yet supportive of LBPC's conversion... for the most part I think everything honestly looks better... still feeling out how to best navigate the site now... Generally, I try not to view the front page, (invariably there is some form of idiocy in some new and daunting disguise that just doesn't interest me), since I'm still gettting my socks wet though I figured what the heck! That is when I saw the most disgusting sight these old eyes have ever beheld!

While the font and splatter design are awesome on these two new banners... CHANGE the COLORS immediately! The Pink would be fine but we really should be 'Pink'ed out by now... NO? And the Blue and Gold don't fit at all... consult a freakin' color wheel... they are in no way related to anything anywhere... sure they compliment each other nicely but that doesn't mean you can just plop them any ol' where. It's hideous! A different hue or value sure, it'll work then but what you got now is ugly.

And I get-- you've been using the paint colors that go with LBPC icon, it looks great! but that gold in 'creator spotlight' doesn't match the orangey color from the 'Little Big Planet Central' sign, and if it is the same color, then the generic blue is the culprit as it has changed his partners appearance. It really is starting to look a little unprofessional, (and its the first time I said anything negative so give me a break!), a little haphazard.

Look at Top Stories. Some matte metallic grey, followed by pink, followed by green, blue and gold, pink, pink, pink,pink, pink, pink. I just know you can come up with better choices and a little more diversity.

edit: Apologies to Night Angel. I'm sorry. In the thread where and when I posted, up to what I had read, no person had been named so I wasn't directly insulting any individual... after reading on, it would seem that I have infact insulted you. Again kindest apologies. I hold your work and your time in the highest regard. With that said, I still think pink and white, and blue and gold are not the way to go.

Huh? Hold the phone, Grav.

I've noticed the Community Spotlight banner has changed, but the Creator Spotlight hasn't. Or at least, I've not seen the 'new' one. have a look at the Creator Spotlight archive - it's been like that since they were introduced.

Is it possible, Mrs. SB, that you're looking at a cached image? When I first read that the images had changed, I saw no difference. I had to go in and clear my browser's cache before I saw the new images. Maybe?

Well, those were the colors of the old banners, we just re-worked them in a different design for the new style. I assume you saw the old ones - why did you not object to those?

Well to be fair... (if you don't mind my speaking for you, Grav) the old ones were made for the old, primarily BLUE skins, where:
a) blue and gold would not look at odds with everything, and
b) pink would not be lost in the sea of pink that is now before us

I've been real happy with the way things are turning out, CC. In fact, I would be donating more - to show my continued support -if it weren't for Haiti, (kinda hard to justify that expenditure, if ya know what I mean). Can't think of any higher praise than that CC... I do appreciate all you do for me through your services to this site. Perhaps I was a bit touchy yesterday, (and I still wish to reach-out to Night Angel to apologize... someone who gives of their own time really should be above the banal sort of commentary I started, so again, Night Angel, I am sorry).

Truth be told my 'unnatural' devotion to all things LBP has turned this passionate guy into a 'Passionate Guy', so for the most part I think I do an admirable job keeping myself in check. Just keep away from my flannel LBP Pj's...

Vortex; the world may be a better (and safer) place... you're hired as my official spokesperson... what you said, Yes that!

Making them less transparent and more contrasty, would look better. Perhaps it should just be left without splatters?

Well, I'm going to point out my, really only big bother with the new style; the notification bar.

The old style had the notification "box", so to speak, under the header. It was also clearly visible, sharing a space with some other specs.

In this new one, the notification bar is very small, almost in the corner, and above the header. To be honest, there's few ways you could make it more invisible. Is it possible to make the coloration a bit brighter, or maybe change the position to make it something you can see easily while browsing?

This is just a minor grief, don't even know if it's possible, so don't worry about it much, just wanted to put in my $.02

The new design is a lot easier on the eyes. It's a pleasant surprise after not visiting the site for a few weeks. I'm curious about the design process. I'm assuming that it's a skin, but is the framework/skeleton a new version? Or did you have to re-code some things manually?

Overall everything is much easier to read. The links in the grey-blue nav bars could be a bigger and more spread out. I think the font size of the Quick Reply form could be increased as well.

Personally, I don't mind the current rep images - they fit with the style and they look good. I don't have any plans to add in the crown again, because I agree with you on the point that you couldn't really tell what they were unless you knew beforehand. We could try point bubbles, but rendering them out would be difficult because they're so transparent.

It's one of those things you just have to re-train yourself to check. It took me a little while to get used to it, but I think it works better now because you only notice it if you're looking for it. It's less "in the way" of other content.

a simple convenience that seems to be taboo is the simplicity in viewing your own threads. in order to do it, you have to go to a post you did, click on your name, THEN you can view your threads.

i think below the view posts button on your profile there should also be a view threads.

also also when i look at my posts i cant tell if someone has posted on that thread since i did. when you're looking at the forum you're able to via the icons at the left side, but when i look at my posts all i see is a pencil icon and so i have to click on each one of them hoping maybe that someone posted after me. its kinda stressful :/

They are supposed to be brighter. If they're misaligned, it's likely a browser issue - what browser are you using? (please provide the version number, usually found in Help > About)

Posting a picture on your friends profile page can mess up a lot of things.
I saw it before, and it's on my list of things to investigate. I just don't have time to tackle most of these things during the week, so I'm waiting until the weekend to make any significant changes.

And I know you know that rep icons get brighter after the fifth icon, but why?
That's also on my list of things to do - I'm going to look at changing the style of the notification bar, to make it fit in with the theme a bit more. Regarding the rep images, those get brighter because the step between the fifth and the sixth rep bar is a big one. It's meant to visually distinguish the first five from the rest - to make the ones after the first five more obvious.

Spoilers are working fine for me as well. What specific problem are you having?

Regarding the Notices, they've been updated to fit the forum. The ads have been moved between the content to prevent things from getting too cluttered, so now I think notices will be eye-catching without being that ugly shade of yellow.

Well, speaking for myself... Chrome does not seem to play well with the spoilers (or vB in general, it seems). I've even taken the time to make a note of it in my VR Challenge - Room Design contest blog: http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/entry.php?995-Design-Contest (http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/../entry.php?995-Design-Contest).

The URL linked images within the spoilers do not all appear. I can't determine any pattern or consistency with it. Some of the them appear and others don't. I know that some of them need to be auto-resized and thought perhaps that was it, but it's a mix of both that are not showing.

So I switched over to Firefox entirely - at least for the time being. There has been other wonky behavior between Chrome and the new LBPC (vB) layout (sorry - don't recall specifics right now). Firefox works perfect with it though.

EDIT: On a different note... I know this has been mentioned before and you've probably got it on your list, but it's easily the one thing that bugs me most with the new format. The 'Go to first new post' links: http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/LBPC-Style/buttons/firstnew.pngalways bring me the top of the page that has the first new post, then I have to click the icon again to get to the newest post.

The first issue is a problem with the way Chrome handles those images, and there's no way to fix it without sacrificing features. vB still does not fully support Chrome (due to oddities in the way Chrome handles certain things) but there are fixes in the pipe for future vB updates. The second and final issue is one that affects everyone using vB 4.0, and there's a fix on the way for that as well.
