World of Black and White (with MGS3 tribute)

Archive: 7 posts

So I made a level I was hoping more people could play (I think total my level has gotten 30-40 plays). It's a story where a machine goes wrong and it ends up turning the whole world to a dismal palette of black and white. Your task is to find and defeat the company behind the madness. It has four boss fights (one hidden). I'm a little worried its not polished well enough. So I'd like to get some feedback. I tried my very very best to be original. There's a torture segment where you have to use different devices to interrogate a boss. And there's a cameo by a very neat Cobra Unit boss. So please. I'd love it if someone could play it and tell me what they thought of it.2010-01-18 23:42:00

Checked it out tonight. Had a couple things I really liked about it.

+ I like your boss design. The way it moved and spun was cool. Hard to kill but very cool.
+ Cute story

I did have a few problems. There's a lever that's attached to a sponge that goes up and down but I can't activate the lever and ride the sponge at the same time. If this is a 2x section you may want to put a sticker letting people know that.

The bombs that go off when the machine malfunctions didn't kill me - maybe you want to put more bombs or some gas so player is killed and goes to the new checkpoint.

I got to the area where there were four black levers with fire, gas, bombs and something else and I got stuck. I couldn't figure out what to do.

I like the work you put into this one. I can see you payed attention to details like stickers and keeping shapes cleanly designed and sounds. Keep creating

The good:
-clean visuals
-good story
-creative bosses
-torture chamber

The bad:
-when you beat the rotator boss, I didn’t notice he was laying there till after I had played with the torture devices. I backtracked and found him laying there. The person who commented above me had the same problem; we just didn’t notice he was there. Try to make it more noticeable once you beat him that he is laying there.

-the first two bosses we kinda boring, both of them moved too fast to really track them with the paintball gun so I just ended up standing in one spot with my gun standing still and just shot away. Not very much fun. I think you need to slow both of the bosses down. Make the chicken slide slower and the rotator spin slow so that you can actually pick your target instead of just hoping the paint might hit it.

-The Pain was a clever reference and accurately portrays the fight from MGS3 buuuuut, it’s not very fun. I almost ran out of lives (if I did run out I wouldn’t start over) so you may want to put an infinite life point down there. Also, the part where the gas comes down and prevents you from coming up is accurate to the original game but doesn’t translate well to LBP. Consider removing the gas because at first I couldn’t tell why I was dying but even when i did figure it out its hard to tell if the gas is still there when your underwater and everything above water is distorted by the camera.

- And lastly, what's with the achievement unlocks? I love the concept of prizes and unlocks but considering 100% of the people that will play this level are playing it on a PS3, a trophy unlock seems to be a little more relevant. Oh well, not a big deal.

So ya, that's my input. Slow the bosses down and maybe get rid of the gas when you fight the pain (or just make it appear for a few seconds and then go away). I liked just about everything else, color, story, characters, torture but the boss fights need some tweaking so they can be fun and not so repetative.

Wow. Thanks for the input guys. Very detailed. I'll make the rotator boss tell you what to do when you beat him, I'll slow down their movements as well. I really wanted to make the pain boss original but also loyal to the original fight. I figured that people would understand the gas coming. I originally had an emitter which warned the player, maybe I'll do that and make it more obvious. Because my point was to keep the player from surfacing and forced them to stay underwater and almost drown. I'll take notes and give it some editing. I'll also be sure to check out your level2010-01-22 20:35:00

There's actually a sponge you can grab and set on the lever. I put some white stickers on it to make it more obvious. That's where the hidden boss is
