Too scary?

Archive: 4 posts

Well, with the new PEGI 7+ guidelines being enforced for all LBP levels, I'm now worried that the level I'm working on might be considered "too scary" for 7 year olds and moderated after it's uploaded.

So anyways, some background info on the level.

The level starts out in a graveyard (I know, strike against it right off the bat. >_<) BUT!!! There's nothing scary. Some gargoyles, tombstones, you go into a mausoleum and come back out to see it struck by lightning, a person shaped tree that you find beheaded (ok this part I'm already going to change. XD) you walk around in the background scenery, nothing too bad. And then once you get some light you go back to the mausoleum and can see through the shadows, revealing the words "Are you afraid of the dark?"

Next part! You fall into a dark pit and have to follow a guiding light. You'll see eyes peering at you through the darkness only to find... rats, bats, a shadowy hand that grabs the light and snuffs it out (originally this was going to be a full shadow creature where you wouldn't see anything, the light would flicker, and then it's there glaring at you for a split second screaming before the light goes back out. But that's scary, so it'll just be the shadowy hand.)

Next part! You walk out of the shadows into a ruined city landscape with giant shadow creatures lifting up out of the ground and roaming around. Eventually you get to a place where you find yourself face to face with one of these giants and... I haven't really decided what's going to happen here. I was thinking it might eat you / breathe shadows on you and send you into a kind of negative universe room / series of rooms but A. I likely won't have enough thermo and B. having the shadow creature affect you at all might be considered scary.

So yeah, basically I'm just really worried now that if I take the time to finish the level it's going to get to a point where I publish it and it gets banned with nothing for me to do about it. What really worries me is that I don't have to think about the level being too scary for a 7 year old (it won't be, since that's not the goal of the level) but instead I have to worry about what other people think is too scary for a 7 year old. And there's not really any way to predict that.

So anyone who's more familiar with PEGI guidelines want to share some more info on the kinds of things they might find too scary for the 7+ age rating?

Yeah, PEGI sure is scary!

It all sounds perfectly acceptable, but I'd wait until Sam_Protagonist from LBW sheds some more light on this. He's supposed to come out with more details and specific examples soon.

I don't think it's something to be worrying about. If moderation is anything like on the PS3, only popular and offensive levels get moderated AFAIK (someone has to actually grief the level; they aren't checked systematically). I also haven't heard of anyone losing their level on their moon or being banned from the PSN over it. So while it's annoying, I don't find it particularly scary to the point where I would alter my level design for it.2010-01-18 18:10:00
