The Metropolitan Sewage Works

Archive: 11 posts

Spent soooo long on this level, more than all the other levels I've made combined. Please give it a go
Level name: The Metropolitan Sewage Works (Water)
psn: Switchfoot1208

There's about four different layers that you can take part on, the easiest route, about the same challenge level, maybe a bit easier, than story levels, is followed by listening to the construction workers and doing as they say, which is probably the best route, probably the most fun.

The rooftops are recommended for second playthrough if you do it, as its not really as fun, just a time-trial thing and goes past the better parts of the level, such as the puzzle in the library and the giant sewer rat chase.

The giant sewer rat chase is found by not listening (meaning, you keep going through the sewers) when the guy tells you to go back on the road or continue at your own peril through the sewers.

The library puzzle is found about the middle of the level, on the road, by listening to the guy when he tells you to go back on the road or continue at your own peril, and involves navigating around a 4 story library delivering the correct books to the customers on the bottom floor.

On the rooftops near the end of them there is another puzzle I'm pretty proud of which involves 5 wheels that you can drag around, with visible magnetic keys on the four compass points, You have to line up the right colours, green frees the dissolve exit, blue gives prize bubbles and red sets off the trigger explosives underneath you.

Also, its not that important to bring the taxi with you the whole way across town, it just gets you some extra points.

So, you've gotta play it with all the effort I put into it

Huge thanks to anyone who plays it, and of course post your level as well for F4F

Cool level, I played it and went through the way with the giant rat chase and it was really fun.

Obviously the one thing you can work on if you want to improve your level is the decoration, truthfully, the game play is fun but its pretty ugly.

Anyway, that pretty much sums it up so I think I won't make a list...

F4F: Sometime I will publish my level StormWaves, I'd really appreciate some feedback on it (it's amazingly fun), but its not out yet so if you check back sometime and its out that'd be great.

Thanks for the feedback, I'll definitely return the favour.

I know the level doesn't look good, but it used to . Unfortunately, the thermometer filled up when I was only half way through, and the aesthetics had to take a hit in favour of gameplay. Surely if I had perfect use of corners etc. I could have managed it, but I didn't really think it'd fill up at the time, and now the thermometer is already full again now that I've finished the level, so there's not really much I can do about it.

Did you know that the thermo is a bunch of smaller ones put together, so you could really probably do some stickering and probably get some new materials in there. You should try, I bet you could.

I agree with the stickering part, however, it looked to me like you use a lot of different materials, and so that probably isn't the wisest approach

I played this last night and thought it had a really cool water level gameplay dynamic in it. I don't think I've seen water level using that particular game play use for water before - at least not exactly like that so that was cool. There are a lot of times where I wasn't sure where to go and some platforming places like the ladders that come up to the road were hard to use. I would also recommend breaking up some of the spaces with the turquoise material with some other decorations as it was a bit flat. I made it through though and nothing broke so that's good.

Thanks for the experience

Ok, played this. Very entertaining! There were a lot of different gameplay elements, and I enjoyed the open-world gameplay.

Here's some notes:

Pros:
In the sewer, I enjoyed the timed swimming segments where if you took too long to get out of the water you would hit spikes
The underwater spinning maze was cool - and, in fact, was my favorite part of the level.
Cool looking underwater jellyfish
Platforming segments across the buildings - nice!

Cons:
Taxi - yes, I realize the material used is called "Taxi".... but I think this car would look FAR better stickered. The "Taxi" material is really overused and is fairly ugly.... but if stickered is one of the coolest looking materials. Maybe sticker it yellow, then use a gradient sticker on top of it to give it a professional look.
Windows stickered on buildings - looked really odd. A better choice would be to shape a window out of dissolve, put the window sticker on it, and copy it into the building so its embedded in the building instead of just a sticker over the top of rough material.
Sewer materials - these materials looked kind of odd for a sewer, and are probably more appropriate for an underwater temple.
The "dissolve switch" in the sewer. It sort of takes away something calling it "dissolve". Maybe build a door, have the switch open it and say "I heard a door open". Saying "I heard something dissolve" is odd... in real life you don't dissolve things, you open things.
While swimming down I could see a section with a guy standing there underwater - maybe hide him until the water disappears.
Scuba tank after water is "safe" is not glued down.
Make sure you hide visible switches and magic mouths - seeing switches and mouths on the books in the library looked strange

All in all, I think this is a great idea and the level has potential, but needs visual work.

Thanks a lot! I always thought it was getting rated 3 stars because of the gameplay, not the visuals, didn't think they had THAT much of an impact on the rating.
I think I can do most of these changes without affecting the thermometer.
Not 100% sure on what materials to make the sewer out of, as it'd be hard to make it look both sewer-ish and good at the same time.

This level's pretty good. I'm not really a fan of multi-path levels like this though cause I wasn't really sure where to go. I had a general sense but the rest was just guessing. The rat race was pretty cool. You also had some unique obstacles that I've never seen before. I gave it four stars.2010-01-26 07:14:00

Hey there

Interesting level! It uses water well and has some neat obstacles, using floating spikes and whatnot. I liked the race at the end, and the level seems like it is worth revisiting. Im sure there is alot i left unexplored.

There's a couple of things i would change, but not much. The maze in the water is made of glass and very hard to se, maybe turn it into a different color or material. The water is also really murky and hard to navigate sometimes. I would also put a camera on the rats so that you can see better, or adjust the angle of the camera there so you know whats chasing you.

Good level, 4 stars!

As your F4F could you try out my sewer level I just finished, called the Aqueduct? It's not really anything like yours, but I thought it was funny that another sewer level came out days before i published mine here's a link to the forums
