Grammar!

Archive: 88 posts

In the popup whatever thingy telling you that there is a new creator spotlight, it says something like (I dismissed it so I can't remember for sure): "The Creator Spotlight is a bimonthly interview..."

Technically bimonthly means once every two months, while semimonthly means twice a month. Or you could just say "The Creator Spotlight is a twice monthly interview..."

I know I'm really nitpicking here, and there's more stuff to be done, but still.

Hey, I love picky grammar stuff! No, I actually do.

Technically bimonthly means once every two months, while semimonthly means twice a month."Bimonthly" has both meanings: clicky (http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/bimonthly)

fortnightly - every .... Ummmmm.

Surely it's not that hard?

I double-checked the meaning of the word before I decided to use it in place of "fortnightly", and it actually does mean twice a month (http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/bimonthly). As to why I decided to use that instead of "fortnightly", it's due to the fact that a large portion of our visitors don't know what that means, and it's not easy to discern in context. "Bimonthly" is fairly easy to understand even if you've never heard the word before.2010-01-18 18:15:00

It's not archaic in England, where we speak English Looks like this is a dialect thing TBH and I guess this was what syroc was getting at (went over my head at the time)! It is interesting the differences within languages though. Is fortnight considered archaic too?

I still maintain it's the least ambiguous and most accurate, unless you want to go for "every other week" :hero:

I actually think "fortnight" is fine, but then again I've lived in England so it makes sense to me. Like CC said, though, it will probably go over some people's heads.

I love the phrase "fortnightly". If it weren't for the fact that a large chunk of the world (mostly Americans) didn't know what it meant, we'd be using that instead.

I think it's not that Americans don't now what it means, it's a matter of uneducated Americans not knowing what is means, and thusly causing a ruckus about it instead of looking it up...

Personally, I would love fortnightly as well. From a future educator's point of view, it's a good thing to throw out words that others aren't familiar with - it spurns them to look it up, and *gasp* actually learn something.

It should be

'weekly, but not quite, because every week which is a week after this week, this week being the week in which this is posted, will be a week without a spotlight, until the week following the week following this week, which will in fact be a week with another of these.'

We tried that English stuff here in the U.S. and it just didn't go over too well.

As for the most unambiguous, the phrase "twice a month" is slightly better than "every other week" in that it sounds cleaner. "Every other week" feels too informal - like we'll do it every other week UNLESS we don't feel like it.

This thread is both hilarious, and very frightening!

People are quite correct when they say that bi-monthly can mean either twice a month, or once every two months. It may seem confusing, but the grammar is nevertheless correct. Just like a bi-plane has two wings, but bi-annual flowers only come out every two years, not twice a year.

"Every other week" feels too informal - like we'll do it every other week UNLESS we don't feel like it. But fortnighly is more accurate too!!!!! In some months the creator spotlight will occur three times, so twice a month is just a downright lie. Good to see you back btw

How about biweekly?

This actually suffers from the same ambiguity as bimonthly:

bi-monthly vs bimonth-ly
bi-weekly vs biweek-ly.

I suggest taking a new approach. Use "sexvigintanually" in order to equally confuse and annoy everyone. This will not only level the global playing field, but also hopefully spawn more threads just like this one.

(My, "sexvigintanually" does sound dirty doesn't it? It actually is the correct Latin phrase... Have fun Googling that everyone. )

'nazi' being used here is a adjective and shouldn't be capitalised.

"is" is spelt with an "S" and you need a full stop at the end of your sentence. Also don't forget the ' in don't and "don't" shouldn't start with a capital. Oh and one final note you spelt see and about wrong . Should i stop now?

I'm also pretty sure it's not even being used as an adjective. Unless we are now talking about "Nazi grammar", i.e. the grammar of the Nazis.... in this case someone is being metaphorically labeled a Nazi (a "Nazi of grammar", if you like) but it's still a noun.

Now, I am going a little out on a limb here, as language is not a specialty, but I believe that the term "Grammar Nazi", would be a noun phrase, where "Nazi" is the main noun and grammar is a modifier of sorts (maybe a qualifier, or something, I don't know the term offhand - it's required for the phrase to have it's intended sense, rather than just adding additional information).

Now, as to whether or not it needs a capital, I'm unsure. But it's not an adjective
