Spyro the Dragon Level Series Demo levels out now for a LBP2 release!

Archive: 82 posts

http://i462.photobucket.com/albums/qq347/Lucario_Dragon/spyrolbplogo.png

Ok, after seeing the trailer.
I am definitely going to move this to LBP2 before releasing it.
I will build what I can now and leave room/thermo for additions.
Judging by the trailer, this will work a lot better than what is currently in the works. Mainly because sparks will actually follow you judging by 1.35 in the video.

Dragonfly racing anyone?
A proper fully animated intro?
Credits featuring sackbots dressed as those who helped?
Sackbots dressed as bosses? e.g. Toasty would have the pumpkin head.
Any other ideas?

What you will be using...
http://i462.photobucket.com/albums/qq347/Lucario_Dragon/Spyrobot.png

I am working on a big project based on the very first Spyro game released in 1998.
It uses 16 levels.
Artisans
Dark Hollow
Toasty
Peace Keepers
Ice Cavern
Dr. Shemp
Magic Crafters
Crystal Flight
Hurricane Hat (Blowhard may get good griefed)
Beast Makers
Tree Tops
Metalhead
Dream Weavers
Crawdad Farm
Jacques
Gnasty Gnorc/Credits

All levels will be locked until I release the first level.
Within here, there are:
A costume tutorial
An intro to the story
The first level.
At the end of each level is a sticker for releasing all of the dragons.
Once you get all of the stickers, you will win a super secret prize that I am not telling anyone about until the levels are released.

I have received enough Dragons for the levels. But I now need some puzzles and gameplay ideas.
Those who contribute WILL be put in the credits.

I really love the spyro games.

I have the first one on my psp.
i could build this whole project with you, im pretty good at art, if i do say so myself.

and i could have the game with me to help you with the color palette and make the style similar.
Do you have a mic or headset?

Yes, I do have a mic. Also, the fact that you have the game is great! I have been using my original PS one copy (never get rid of a classic).
I am not asking for people to help me create the levels (but if you want to, terrific!), rather, that they create scenery as it is my creative downside. But any gameplay ideas would be great!

Items that need making (will update):
An invisible P.T.D that goes up/down and left/right with a dragonfly attatched. (Or some other mechanism to get a dragonfly to follow, maybe even make a thick/thin dragonfly if you can!))

Dragons, and lots of them, they need to be in this style:
http://images2.wikia.nocookie.net/spyro/images/b/bb/Dragon.jpg
Colours should vary along with age and muscles.

Some Cardboard Dragons would be great! I am going to need a lot of them, but if you could make some differing styles that I could sticker differently, you are hired!

Ok, anyone willing to contribute to the series can do so, much easier.
I have published a level with a template for you to sticker however you want, (except of the parts already stickered) it is called: 'Spyro Dragons Template'
I need at least 30 dragons to go throughout the 18 levels.
Anyone who makes one, that goes into a level, will be credited in the credits level.

I remember playing Spyro the Dragon. The first three games on the first Playstation were the best. The rest of the games sucked.

Good luck on your project. You WILL need it.

(P.S. Are you going to include the bonus Flight/Speedway levels? I doubt it, but it could be possible with jetpacks and race gates)

(P.P.S. Are you also going to make the bosses retreat to another room/area when you hit them? The first Spyro was just like that. The other Spyro games, though, just had you fighting them in single enclosed arenas)

There will be a level that is primarily jetpack. But no speedway (however, the egg thief does return in a chase level).
Also, although it was only in the 3rd game, Sparx will get his own level in the style of a scrolling shooter (Space Invaders but scrolling).

As for the bosses, I think that Gnasty will probably be a room to room boss but not the others. In between fighting him will be a difficult but possible gauntlet.
Also the bosses will be races, so whoever can beat them the fastest will get onto the high scores.

Lo and behold, a third Insomniac series on LBP. I can die happy. Spyro the Dragon was one of the earliest and best games I have ever played. Heck, I still play it. This is gonna be awesome. When I get a router I'll make some dragons. Oh, and please use the names they used in the game, I would be grateful. Spyro ftw!

@Beed: Insomniac had to sell Spyro after Year of the Dragon in order to get by. But don't be mad, or else they never would've made R&C!

I was planning on using the names from the game. Great, can't wait to see your dragon!
Also, they said that because Spyro had no real thumbs, he could not hold a gun (hint @ Ratchet) so he was limited. Fortunately, Sackboy can hold a gun. But the paintinator will only be in 2 of the levels so that it does not lose Spyro Charm by having a gun.

I was thinking about doing R&C but they have already been done.

Or, think of some awesome gameplay ideas!

So are gonna have Sparx follow you around the levels? That'd be great. Also, a cool idea would be an occasional sheep that could be dissolved in order to destroy the current checkpoint and replace it with a new one. (To emulate replenishing Sparx) I don't know how do-able/ thermo friendly this is, but it's just an idea. But of course, it couldn't be done too often, or it would make it too easy. Perhaps it could be done in boss levels?2010-01-23 14:28:00

Unless someone can make an invisible PTD, sparx will only follow in a few levels.
But the last level (before Gnasy Gnorc) will be a sparx only level.

BTW, loving the sheep idea! I will vary the animal on each level like in the original.

Main HUB with intro, costume etc is now finished.
Work on the levels start now.

Question: Will you use Infinite Checkpoints in the levels? I see one in one of the screenshots (although it is a costume tutorial). If you do use them, then I will play your levels when you finish.

Other than that, this looks very promising!

Another question: Do you have to rescue all the dragons? Or some of them? If so, will you make a super bonus level for 100% completion?

Infintie life checkpoints will be used throughout. You do not have to rescue all the dragons, but if you rescue them all, you will recieve more gems (points) just before the scoreboard.

Have started work on the Artisan level, will post some pictures.

And, I still need lots of Dragons (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=21645-Dragon-Template-for-you-to-sticker-for-my-17-level-series) otherwise I will have to make them myself, but I really do want this to be a community effort.

The basic Gnorc is finished, they will vary in style but in general, will be the same. Bigger ones will appear about half way through the levels.

Awesome! Will you also assign the voice acting to the dragons when you free them?

Btw, is it possible to release each world separately? I mean, when you finish Artisans, for example, and Peace Keepers isn't finished. With the system you have, you wouldn't have to replay Artisans for the new key since you would be able to use its sticker at the hub.

Sorry, it was difficult to phrase the question.

(BTW, looking at that diagram, you have some of the bosses mixed up. You have Toasty and Dr. Shemp in their correct worlds, Blowhard is the boss of Magic Crafters, Metalhead is the boss of Beast Makers, and Jacques is the boss of Dream Weavers. No comment for Gnasty Gnorc.)

The boss placements were done by memory, but thanks for pointing that out. I will change the diagram.
I am going to try and vary the voices for the dragons: have some as King jolly, king informative, geezer, pirate, scientist etc.
Do you mean release Artisans when finished along with its level and toasty. Then release Peace keepers when those levels are done? I'd rather release them all at once really.

Actually, in order to make the gameplay from getting repetitive, the levels probably won't be too long. I am bout to start the 'flying' tutorial in the artisans world which will lead to the finish.

Which leads me to: Any gameplay ideas, any even if it may not work, would be greatly appreciated. Be it puzzles or platforming because at the moment I can only think of about 4 levels worth of gameplay.

Should I publish the tutorial as a demo? But not give out any stickers/prizes? (will make a poll for this if I can.)
(will only be able to publish it after the 30 dragons are done as 16 of the levels are published (empty) so I could sort out keys and then I have my 2 other levels (will be 3 on friday) leaving me with only 1 publish slot free for the template (current), demo (if wanted) and HUB.

EDIT:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MD6TwVCPINE&feature=related
Reminds me of why I am doing this. (even though this ad is for the second game.)

You may change the materials if you wish, but if I really need the thermo they may be changed back (or I will just put that dragon in a different level. Electricuting thin planes is fine.
Please do not make the dragon grabbable though.

I will update the OP with some more up to date images of the HUB.

I agree with ghik16.

Speaking of Magic Crafters, are you going to include those evil green wizards that could shift the level geometry? Particularly those annoying ones where they would shift the geometry to make walls.

I was indeed going to. Some may create a wall just as you think a load of gems are in your reach! haha!
On the other hand I think I will also do a maze (birds eye view) in which the wizards move the maze constantly.

And definitely keep making them. In the credits sequence, your name will appear followed by images of your dragons. The same will go for anyone else who makes a dragon/s.
Most likely, I will put the first community dragons on the boss levels as they will give the best advice.

Also, as an update: Each level area (artisans, peace keepers etc) will have a different gameplay element, not saying what atm. But the artisan tutorial level's basic gameplay elements will be throughout.

Thanks for the feedback. Since MAG came out, I have been playing it non-stop. But I am now at lvl 60 (max) and have now received 16 of the 22 dragons needed.
The Dark Hollow Level is now finished, Work on Toasty will start this afternoon.

Please note that the levels are quite short, but this allows me to save gameplay ideas for other levels rather than repeating the same things over and over.

I have decided to not work on Toasty for now since I cannot get my head round the logic I want to use. I have it but am not sure what hooks up to where. I need SLS10 to explain/show how to hook up his logic. I will ask him next time we are on PSN at the same time for some help.

So, work on peace keepers will start tonight.
Once all 22 dragons are done I will create a level with images of the levels that I will update. I will also add the spyro costume tutorial.

Sticker with any story, custom, or DLC stickers of these packs
MGS
PotC
Monster
Norse
Egyptian
Rag Doll Kung Fu
Ghostbusters

You may lethalise thin layers and change material (provided that the material is in story mode/the packs listed).
Please not that I may change the material to save thermometer but this is very unlikely.

I am already planning on using it in the Ice Caverns level where the general idea is 'catch the egg thief!' a bit like the thief king on LBP PSP. The dragon will hatch once rescued. Also your dragon is the first one in 'Dark Hollow'. Aka first community dragon!

How long will it take you to make the whole series?

Short version: I have no idea.

Long version: Education, exams and other things are making it so I can only build for about 2/3 hours a week. Plus I am trying to find good gameplay ideas for the levels and am struggling. I am going to play some of the platforming levels from past spotlights to get inspired.

Good idea. This has gotten me thinking about a Crash Bandicoot series of levels.2010-03-09 05:35:00

Ok, update time. The HUB is gone as that method meant carrying 32 stickers. Not good.
I plan to work on these after my exams, last one is June 15th.
However, I will be transferring and updating when LBP2 is out.

If anyone has any ideas for gameplay I am all ears. and I mean ALL.

It's pretty obvious, but if there is a magic power-up in LBP2 and you can breathe fire, include that. When LBP2 is out also, when you collect a dragon egg, it should crack open and a sackbot dressed as a dragon could pop out.

(I'm getting a bit too excited about LBP2 if you haven't noticed.)

Question: Should I make all of the levels for a Spyro vehicle?
Direct control seat obviously
Charge attack
Jump
Glide!!!
Fire breathing
And a special, fully flying one for crystal flight.

I just tried to make a spyro vehicle in LBP. It did not go well at all.
I think I will wait for LBP2 and what seems to be a stabiliser/gyro tool.

http://www.newsoftheworld.co.uk/multimedia/archive/00111/lbp2b_516x516_111781a.jpg

This looks like a rudimentary walker vehicle. Notice that the legs each use a motor/wobble bolt and a regular bolt. The leg parts are perfectly upright despite the awkward mid-climb position and there being nothing to hold them upright. Note the shiny new object just above the sound objects that resembles an atom or a gimbal. There being nothing else present to explain their perfect upright positions, and a gyroscopes resemblance to a gimbal, I'm betting that the object is a gyroscope object and can force an object to remain upright. It may even be tweakable: let the object lean either direction 5 degrees.... but that's pure speculation.

Or should I use a sackbot with the modifications for each player.
(probably this judging by how bad the vehicle went unless I cannot get it to breathe fire and/or glide)

Aww so you really can't publish it on LBP
This sounds so cool playing 18 levels it would be so much fun if you placed prize and score bubbles nicely it would be like playing a real LBP level!

I really need the monster pack!!
Actually one of my friends used the dragon knight's body from the white knight chronicles pack. If you don't have the wings.

I guess I could publish what I have so far. But it really isn't much. I will post here when I do.

Sorry about double post but...
4 Demo levels are published!
The first is called 'The Artisans' the rest are unlocked via a key at the end of each level.
If you can't find them, my PSN is 'Jedi_1993'.
Finally, ENJOY!
