*SPOTLIGHTED* The Mine 2

Archive: 26 posts

What's this then?
Sackboy continues his journey into the deep dark mines, hoping that one day he will see daylight. But he must use his enviroment around him in order to progress through the mines, and keep his fingers crossed.

Sackboy will also need to handle plenty of switches, and use his brains to get past obstacles, as well as the occasional explosive, and with the assistance of a mine cart, there's nothing he can't do!

Race?
That's right! There is an unlockable race at the beginning of the level, which will time you to see how long it takes you to finish the level, and then award you points! So, if you still have the sticker switch from the first level use this at the beginning! If not - don't worry, you can collect this at the end of this level too!

Screens?
Sure! Take a look below!

Turning platforms? Whoever thought of that?!

http://i601.photobucket.com/albums/tt100/standby250/APhoto_4-1.jpg
Water!! Don't expect too much of it though!

http://i601.photobucket.com/albums/tt100/standby250/APhoto_3-1.jpg
These mine lifts can sometimes be dangerous!

Anyway, I hope you enjoy playing this. Feedback is very welcome, and if there are any problems, please let me know
Thanks!

Awesome! Thanks! Sorry rangerzero! I've not been home all week, and I just thought to myself today - why not publish? I finished it on... monday I think but then I was away. Anyway, don't expect too much more - the thermo started to get very angry!v2010-01-15 19:11:00

I just played this one. First off, I really like this level. I really like the looks, but I think you use a little too much red lighting. I would like to have seen just a touch of some other color mixed in. I'm not saying it looks bad I just thought wow there's a lot of red there. Now to the gameplay. I think the gameplay is excellent. I love your puzzles, they are a little tricky, but not too hard. Very fun. I didn't get to finish the level though. When I got to the mine cart ride part my cart flipped over, and the checkpoint kept spawning me into the fire. You might want to test some more, and work out a fix. If you find anything post it, because I would love to come back and finish this level.
Could you check out one of the survival challenges in my sig? thanks

Just played it and I thought it was a good level. I like that it's straighforward but since you activate and do alot of stuff it feels like it was a puzzle level. There's not enough level out there where you need to "figure your way out" you see. I went through the whole level and everything went smooth. I love the Simon Says part, it stroke me as original actually. I didn't flip in the mine cart (lol smasher ) and I also did the race. It's sad that almost nobody finished the level, I think they miss something. This one is especially interesting in race mode because of its nature. You remember the level and how to do it since it was puzzling therefore when you go and race, you're confident to make it through but faster. This makes the race fun.

Well, I hope more people will play this!

Thanks RangerZero and Smasher1973! I'm glad to hear that you guys liked it! Yeah, I think the reason behind not many people finishing MIGHT be the mine cart falling over - although I'm not sure how I can change this seeing as I have very limited thermo left! During my testing, I found that you were more likely not to fall over if you hold R1? So maybe that's something you could try =). Glad you liked the race =) Oh and Smasher1973? I know the lighting might have been to reddy or orangey, but I think that's because I struggled to find many suitable colours for a mine! And sure, I'll play your level next time I'm on LBP!
Thanks! I hope more people will play this too! =)
Got any ideas how I can... promote it?
And thanks RangerZero for helping me test it before!

hey, I forgot to tell you but it's possible to grab the left cloud and then swing you on top of the leaderboard. Once you're there, you can walk to the right and drop outside the level.

Thanks! That's now been edited so it's no longer possible to fall out of the level =)

Just played this and I thought it was pretty good. It was a nice fun balance of platforming and puzzles ( I really like the one where you had to copy the lights). There's a lot of variety too, which is good as is means you're never really doing the same sort of puzzle twice, but at the same time that means there's no continuing gameplay element throughout the level, so just as you get familiar with one thing there's something completely different to do instead.

A few minor things:

- Near the start there's that thing you grab which bounces you onto the ceiling. Even though I was quickly tapping it, it only worked about 1/5 of the time. Managed to do it after about 30 seconds trying, but you might want to see if it can be improved at all. Could just be me being unable to grab and release quick enoguh though.

- The timed puzzles ou have could perhaps be more obvious they're timed. Thos platforms with the spikes that you grab the siwtch to rotate for instance. I managed to get past them on my first try, but I wasn't aware they'd spin back after a while. Maybe using a ticking clock noise if you have the History kit would let players know that they have to be quick.

- For the mine cart at the end you could add some kind of supports for the track. At the minute it looks like it's just floating in mid-air.

Overall, a good 4 star level in my opinion. Might go back later and give it a go in race mode.

For F4F, if you have time, could you check out my Deflectorball level please? (link in sig)

Just played this, and it's very cool. I loved the part with the paintinator and the cart, although the paintinator on the right was kinda tricky to get to for me (I would jump up to get where it is, but there was a layer behind it so it jumped back onto it instead of forward to the paintinator). Also, when trying to shoot the switch for the second time, the grab sponge for getting the bombs was in the way until i realized it was there and moved. Kinda my fault, though, as it isn't really that hard to see.
Other than that, the rest of it looks really good.

Checked this one out the other night and I really like it.

+ Awesome lighting (I'm a sucker for good lighting)
+ Nice geometry in the landscape
+ Thoughtful puzzle work
+ Good platforming
+ Loved that it picked up right from the end of #1

I think I may have caught you in between fixes though. First time I played it my group managed to ram the mine cart over the stop block and we couldn't move it so we had to restart. Second time the water level was too high in the room with the generator looking thing and the blue and green buttons. Can't push buttons in the back layer if your in water so we had to restart again. Third time was the charm though and everything worked great. The mine cart is the weakest link in this level though. Careful players will have no trouble with it but the rush about types may have issues with it.

On the whole I thouroughly liked this level. I gave it 5 stars & hearted it. Thanks for the sequel - I'm a fan of the first.

First off, let me say thank you to everyone who has played and left feedback! I'm really pleased that you've enjoyed yourselves

Nuclearfish: Thank you for your feedback! I've made a few changes - those changes being adding a ticking clock sound on the timed bits (Great idea!). Unfortunatly, I'm a slightly stumped as to how to make the bouncy thing at the beginning any more reliable, and unfortunatley I can't really add supports to the tracks at the end due to a very complicated reason with the structure of that part. But thanks all the same =) sure I'll check out your level soon as I find someone to play with!

Hibbsi91: Thanks for playing! I'm glad you liked that bit with the explosives and the paintinator - that was one bit I'm especially proud of! Yeah I know the paintinator is in a dodgy place but that's the only place I could put it! I did however make it so if you move slightly forward, the entrance closes up which makes things a WHOLE lot easier! Also, thanks for playtesting when the level was still being made!

Morgana25: YAY! I have a fan =p! Yeah, I think that you must've caught me inbetween fixes because I know for a fact that there's not meant to be water in some of the places you mentioned! I'm really glad that you liked it (and everyone else), I was almost having doubts because last time I checked, I didn't have many plays!

Shawneboi Thanks =) It's nice to hear praise like that!

Thanks everyone for your feedback =)

I thoroughly enjoyed playing your level.

The puzzle elements were good, particularly the section with the paintinator and the cart and the one with the lights. You also managed to combine the brainteaser side of things nicely with some fun platforming. Nothing?s too difficult but it's varied and it all works really well together to make for a fun playthrough.
I enjoyed the visuals too. You really managed to create the feel of being in a mine and I liked the lighting. It gave your mine a different feel to all the other mines I've seen.

I had one problem though. The elevator which falls down into the water got stuck halfway down and I had to restart. It may have been a one off however. I also had to restart when I stupidly wedged the mine cart with the bomb behind the stop blocks and couldn't reverse it. My clumsiness at fault there though.

The race is a great idea and I?m going to have another go at it to improve my score. It's funny how just adding a bit of speed and tension makes you mess up on things you did smoothly first time round! I might cheat though and activate the race gate after having done the jump pad section...

5 stars and hearted

Lol Hibbsi91: Thanks! That's for the spotlighted team to decide though =)
Thanks shropshirelass! Ha! Decided to cheat on that bit then? Good idea - I never thought of that! I'm glad you enjoyed it - I'll try to make that stop point on the mine cart area a bit more... useful - I've had a few reports of this being problematic! As for the lift - I don't know why that happens! It's happened when I've playtested before, but sometimes it happens, and sometimes it dosn't. But as I don't know what causes it, I can't fix it - and I don't have enough thermo to pull the whole thing apart and together again. Sorry about that but thanks =)
Thanks for all the praise, feedback, comments and plays I've had! Does anyone want me to play any of thier levels? Just that not many people have mentioned it so far!
Thanks =)

Just played this again, and the "R1 tap" piston at the beginning got stuck. However, this was in extreme network lag conditions, and I don't think it was through any fault of your own. And there were three sackpeople on it

Ok, ok, so we were trying to break stuff. But we couldn't do it again the next time through, and it was with less lag than before, so I'm guessing network latency was the culprit.

As for F4F, I'm working on something top-secret for now (top-secret because I'm not sure it will work XD)
I'll ask you to check it out later.

I played this this morning. I was having a really a good time, it looked beautiful and was very well designed. Then I managed to tip over the car type thing so far in (with the bombs and moving bridges), which unfortunatly stopped me from continuing. I'd put quite a bit in to get to that point, and didnt want to restart in case it happened again. You really should emit another if that happens.

Great level up until that point tho.

I played this the other day.... didn't have any issues, but wanted to stop in and say I really enjoyed it. I loved the puzzle where you need to get a bomb to the left to blow up the floor... it got me for a couple minutes, but I figured it out. Great stuff!2010-01-24 21:09:00

Hi. Just wanted to say I played through a 2nd time & enjoyed the level greatly. Good variety of puzzles. It's great giving players a different experience with optional content. I always try to do that in my levels, too. Don't have any complaints. You might want to double check that elevator I got stuck in, but it might have just been a freak thing. (?)

Anyways, keep at it!
