Fireball Island (LBW1 contest entry)
by Thegide
ETA: OUT NOW!
Genre: Platformer

(EDIT: relocated from blog while I experiment with VB4.0 upgrade features)

Fireball Island is my 4th major level in development. I took a rather lengthy break from LBP in 2009 to catch up on other games, but I'm back creating. The concept for this level is based off of the 1986 board game by Milton Bradley. The tagline for the board game is "The dimensional adventure game of pitfalls and perils!" It is set on an unexplored tropical island, the home of the primitive idol Vul-Kar. Players progress along winding paths around the island, avoiding fireballs and trying to capture Vul-Kar's jewel and carry it to the escape boat.

This version of Fireball Island plays out similarly. The premise of the level is to obtain the Vul'Kar ruby and escape from the island alive. The idol of Vul'Kar doesn't take kindly to jewel thieves though, and the island is set with obstacles preventing you from reaching the jewel. Note that you're not alone on the island. Another jewel thief has laid his eyes on the Vul'Kar ruby and the race is on to claim it.

I'm getting close to closing off the level, but a significant amount of polish remains to be applied. Here are some screenshots from my development in progress:

Native village. Here, you will receive backstory from the locals.

Meet your badguy, a jewel theif that has come to claim the Vul'Kar ruby as his own. Hurry, the race is on:

I've finally decided on the color palette for these nom-nom fishes:

Fireball alley, captures the essence of the board game - rolling fireballs (and not getting hit by them):

Early implementation of the fireball puzzle:

The idol Vul'Kar... he doesn't look too happy to see you:

As always, the answer is "it's done when it's done". I might try to finish this up to submit it for the water competition at the end of the month, but there's still so much I could do with it. Playwise, it's almost complete, but there is always a lot of work left decorating. I have a few more NPCs to design and am thinking about doing a video intro, and still need to implement the story bubbles.

Yikes, less than two weeks before January is over. I'd really like to have this out the door by then.

Did a bit of decorating this weekend. Added in most of the dialogue. Did a TON of playtesting for the fireball puzzle and Vul'Kar idol areas. I figure there's close to 50 logic switches between those two areas alone. But, this is the part of the level that really shines. Everything is so nicely choreographed, it's like watching a movie play out. A very action-packed movie. Probably 50% of my development time has gone into this area. I hope you guys like it.

I'm still stuck for NPCs for the village. I wanted to make some tribal natives, but I'm pulling my hair out over designs. Sometimes the stickers just seem to bloody limiting. Like for example, mouth stickers. Every single one is absolutely FUGLY. I'm probably looking at custom stickers at this point... great. I spent two hours on designs last night to come up empty handed.

I'll probably be looking for alpha testers by next weekend. I've been compiling a buglist - I think most of the major level breaking issues are fixed. If you think you're interested drop a reply and I'll PM you.

I'd test for you, if you need me to.

Also, you are so right. The mouth stickers are absolutely terrible and ugly!

Thanks Piggabling. I sent you a friend request.

I think I finished off the last of the gameplay design stuff today, so it's a lot of decorating and tweaking from this point onwards. Still a lot of work, but the level should be finishable at this point. I'll ready the key level and PM you a password in a few days.

EDIT: Think these guys might do well for my natives.... (for my own reference)

Perfect. I'll likely move this to Level Showcase for F4F in a day or so. I still have some things to add (cameras, lighting, etc.)

Very interested to see how you guys fare with the pillar puzzle. I could provide hints here but that would defeat the entire purpose of testing.
