Competitions for Money

Archive: 4 posts

I've just read this:

http://blog.us.playstation.com/2010/01/be-a-littlebigplanet-game-changer-and-earn-up-to-50000/

and it got me thinking about money within the game. Now I know there has been threads based on whether having to pay to play community levels would be a good idea or not and personally I think that's always going to be a bad road to go down.

What do you guys think about competitions whereby you pay to enter and the winner/runners up get a split of the prize money?

Now I know this is never going to happen. The legal and ethical issues for Sony would forbid it before the idea could even be spoken about.

This isn't something I'm seriously entertaining, I just thought it may be something to discuss and wondered what you guys thought about it. I know there's a lot of people who would hate this idea and they dislike anything to do with competition within LBP, but I just thought it may make an interesting thread.

I'm not really sure either way. I can see many many bad points about it and how it could corrupt the' fun' of the game and is totally opposite to what LBP is all about. I'm sure this is going to be a resounding 'no', and when taking everything into account that would definitely be my answer too.

But I dunno there something about it that makes me think this could be an interesting thread if it was discussed and not just dismissed! Saying that, I'm not really sure how much sure how much room for discussion there is when everyone is going to lean towards 'definitely not'.

Let's find out, I guess...

I think copy right would be a big issue, if some one make a mario level and get pay for it I can't see big N being happy about it. I love to see them do somthing like GOTY but maybe as DLC and maybe have a costume at the end of the level that the creator wants.2010-01-14 08:30:00

I'll be the devil's advocate and say yes. I mean, why not? You see it in other games like Magic: The Gathering and FPS'es, it starts friendly enough, but as it gets bigger the prizes become bigger, too, and people start playing professionally (i.e. prizes as their main income). I don't know if LBP will get this big, but if it does, great! People striving to win a competition = people building great levels for me. 2010-01-14 08:57:00

I feel competitions are good for some of the community because if you enter a competition you are aiming for the best prize, so you will try the best you can. This can be good for some people who don't have that much experience in creating good levels but are entering the competition, they will try and push the boundaries when creating a level. If they are successful with whatever they did in the competition they will be more confident and the next time they go to create something, they are more likely to have a higher standard compared to before the competition. I think that competitions are a great way to accelerate learning.

As for the prizes, I don't think money is the best prize you can have; it is the best prize in one way: the fact that you can use it to get anything as opposed to an item prize like a TV. However, the problem with money is that it can make people a lot more greedy and selfish, you are more likely to get more entrants than if the prize was a TV, but it also makes the thing seem a lot more serious and dull. LBP is definitely not the game for that sort of thing. Also, as Jump_Button mentioned, there could be copyright issues.
