Survival Challenge ( Hot Pepper Hustle )

Archive: 22 posts

Do you have what it takes.
Uncle jalepeno has eaten too many hot peppers. Help him out by cleaning his stomach. In this challenge you throw the peppers out of the sides, and collect the score bubbles. Don't get too close or he'll digest ya.
This is one of my oldest levels. I dug it out and spruced it up a bit, so I thought I'd put it on the showcase.
It's actually really fun, so check it out!11664

Just played it. I love survival challenges (they're the only type of level I create, as well), so I just had to give this one a go.

Visuals:

The playing area looks nice. A few details on the backwall of Jalapeno's stomach could have added some finsihing touch, but it's so frantic there's not even time to take a closer look at that backwall. Why is his stomach framed by bones? Anyways, it's a game The bones are a nice design choice and provide a clear optical clue on where to drop the peppers. The starting area looks a bit bland in my eyes, especially the uncustomized, cardboardy player-blocking sign. You could spice this up some more. The scoreboard area does look nice as well.

Gameplay:

It's a blast. I've only played it on my own, but I'm sure this will be one heck of a party with multiple players trying to fling the chilis. The physics of the game do their share on making this an unforgettable experience. It just works out. The weight, the shape - you've managed to perfectly balance the chilis out. When I missed a shot, I always knew it was my fault and not a level-sided issue. The red, point-boosting (but well buried) peppers are great, too. Though the first one of them can easily be reached by just rushing down at the beginning. I'd change that by stacking some more green chilis on top of it. The "stomach quakes" are nice. They fit in story-wise, they introduce a new element of danger, but are helpful as well, since they can uncover the red peppers. Overall, it's a great experience!

I didn't particularly like the way the points were distributed. Letting them fall down at a constant speed using dark matter blocks above the playing field and attaching point bubbles using one-way pistons or winches could have worked out as well, but I don't really see a need to change this. Your scoring system works out as well, it's just a personal preference of mine.

Don't decapitate me please, but I think water might be a worthy addition to this level, both as a new physical challenge and as a new element of danger. Color it green-yellowish and call it stomach acid. Let it start under the actual playfield and raise slowly, maybe depending on how efficient the player is. Like this, for example: Build a water level controller. Let it raise the water level a few inches every second. Add a second input: For each pepper the player gets rid of, let it drop down a few inches (maybe three times as much, so the level would stay constant if the player got rid of one pepper per 3 seconds). Just an idea of mine.

Overall, I gave it 5 stars and a heart, well deserved. Added to my list of "levels to be played when friends are around".

If you want to do F4F, may I suggest taking a look at my own new survival challenge, Tomb Turmoil (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=20900-Tomb-Turmoil-Survival-Challenge-%28Pictures-Win-150XP%21%29)? Thanks!

Thanks for playing and for the feedback! I was thinking on sprucing up the visuals a little more, so maybe your push will give me the ambition to do it. The red pepper that's up towards the top I want people to get that one easy, so they see you get more points for it. The score bubble system is part of the challenge. If you do it right you can string together small chains for more points. I really like your idea about the stomach acid, but I think water would pose more problems than it's worth. I could use gas though. Maybe I'll play around with it a little. Thanks for the idea!

I played it, it was one of the better survival challenges out there. It was a pretty unique take on the "grab something and drop it somewhere else" level. My biggest complaint was that the poisonous gas that killed you if you went too far on either side wasn't fully visible. I often died by going too close because I couldn't see it. I would also suggest throwing in a few more ways to be killed as the level goes on. Overall though it was a great level. 4/5 and a heart. Please give me some feedback on my level (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=21278-Mysterious-Planet-Black-Ore). Thanks.2010-01-17 04:45:00

I really enjoyed this level. I thought the art direction was great, and the game play was very fun. I especially enjoyed how you were introduced to the level, and everything flowed very well. The concept of cleaning out a stomach is very creative, and fit the game play perfectly. My only complaint, is that the first time I played, I died right off the bat, because I had no idea how far I could go before I hit the gas. If you could add some type of visual to illustrate the edge of the play area, it would make the level perfect!

For F4F can you try my level Survive Or Explode II

Ok. I've made a bunch of changes. I've implemented Treas idea about the stomach acid. (thanks for the idea Treas) I've added antacid tablets if you get behind on throwing the peppers out, and I've spruced up the beginning a bit. I've also made the gas around the level boundary easier to see. Anyone who's tried this out might want to play it again, as it plays quite a bit different now. Check it out!2010-01-18 00:26:00

Whew.... just got done playing this about 10 times. This challenge has a really unique feel to it. Trying to get those peppers out of the body - man, it requires skill, strategy, speed.... this challenge in concept is simple, however is incredibly challenging and filled with depth. I played over and over again, trying to master my "pepper throwing" technique. Got several of the red ones out before dying.

5 stars and a heart!

Hi Smasher1973,

This a fun and challenging level, and a unique concept. Here are a few things I think might make it even better:
1) On the dialogues at the end: when you die and respawn, he says "thanks for helping" (or something along those lines). However, on several occasions he would say after that, after I have already died and the game is over: "hurry partner, my stomach's a rollin". I am not sure exactly how to do it, but it would make since to disable that part of the dialogue once you have already died.
2) I guess this is more of a question: how does the antacid work? Do you have to do something with it after it drops into the stomach? The gas seemed to keep rising steadily after I pulled the antacid switch.

Again, neat concept, unique, and loads of fun. Thanks for checking out my level! I'll be sure to check out some of your other levels soon.

My returned F4F:

+ good concept,original and novel.

- bit too difficult as the peppers drop in way faster than you can get them out again.
- same as pennydog I used 1 antacid tablet ( that was all I had chance for ) but it didn't seem to make any difference.
- the gas at the sides is too close. you have try and throw the peppers from a distance which just slows you right down making it impossible to keep up.

Overall: Great idea but just too difficult for 1 player alone.

As others say it's an interesting concept and novel. However i have one small problem with this level: i find it waaay to easy to die while flinging peppers out, can that be made easier somehow? Also, the water thing could work; you use gas in the water and then the antacids can have a water switch that dissolves them and drasically cuts the "water" level!2010-01-25 05:17:00

Thanks for the feedback! You know, I was gonna fix that last time I updated this level, but I forgot. Thanks for reminding me. Will fix tonight. As for the antacid I'm really sorry everyone. You have to throw them out. I thought it would make it a little more challenging. I should've put in an explanation. I think I might make it so you don't have to throw them out.

Thanks for playing mistervista! The peppers fall in fast enough for multiplayer. I think? (never tried it). They're falling in just so you don't run out. You'll never get them all out. You just give it all you got, and try to get the highest score. As for the gas on the sides I think it's just right. The best technique I've been able to come up with is, you just fling the peppers from the middle. (less distance to fly).

Also, the water thing could work; you use gas in the water and then the antacids can have a water switch that dissolves them and drasically cuts the "water" level!
Thanks for playing RCIX! The things you mention about using water aren't the reason it wont work. When you flood this level all the peppers float to the top. Also the stomach rollin thing doesn't work. I might be able to make water work, but I don't want to invest that much time in this level. I just wanted to make what I have here better.

Just updated this. I fixed the speech bubble problem, and I also made it so all you have to do is pull the antacid thing. You don't have to throw them out anymore.2010-01-27 01:26:00

I played this several times tonight. It's pretty well done, and my only real suggestions have already been mentioned. Basically I thought it was a very innovative concept and unique approach to survival challenges. The theme is just right and you'll catch a lot of plays I think.

The background in the stomach is a bit bare, as was mentioned. It would be cool to see some sticker texturing maybe. Maybe an ulcer or two haha who knows. Maybe the leftovers of some other parts of the meal.

The gameplay is fairly straight forward, but yeah you have to get so close to the sides to dump the chilis that 9 deaths out of 10 are because you strayed too close to the gas. When I think of survival challenge I think of a level starting off easy and gradually getting harder, and I would say that fits this level if I didn't die to the side gas so many times. If I kept my distance and flung the chilis, I usually missed. I think some tweaks here would improve the playability overall and help your ratings, but if you're happy then my suggestions are moot. I never lasted long enough to make use of the antacid tablets... but I did manage to grab a top 20 score.

Good luck and thanks for your review of Fireball Island.

OK. Enough people have problems with this, so I'm gonna change it.

Good point. I guess it never dawned on me that dieing by the gas on the sides would feel cheap.

Well, I wouldn't say I'm happy with it. Just working on something new. I do value your opinion, and thank you for the feedback. It just might give me the motivation to invest more time in this level. Thanks!

I updated this again last night. I removed some of the gas on the sides, so it should be much easier to chuck the peppers out. I also added decoration to the background. It looks more like a stomach should now.2010-01-29 21:07:00
