Armagadder by tsr13 (PSP)

Continue your adventures in the Space Corps and defend LittleBigPlanet from a deadly threat! (Part 3 in the Space Corps series)

By popular demand, here's a third helping of absurd space antics. The story begins after the events of Apollo 13.5 (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=t=20144) and finds Sackboy wandering around on My Moon looking for score bubbles. After a bumpy ride home and an encounter with the Flight Surgeon, Sackboy is once again sent into orbit on an important mission. A mysterious object is speeding through outer space on its way to LittleBigPlanet, and it's Sackboy's job to investigate.

This is my fourth PSP level, and remarkably it gave me almost no problems at all during the create process. I worked on this level for several weeks overall, but put the project on hold halfway through when I decided to make The Interwebs (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=t=20652). Although a couple elements of this level are leftovers that didn't fit in my other Space Corps levels, it is almost entirely new material. I had a lot of extra ideas that didn't make it into Armagadder either, so Space Corps part 4 is a possibility.

I hope you enjoy playing Armagadder as much as I did creating it. Thanks and have fun.

Hey Taffey,

Armagadder! Hehe. Love the title. This level is certainly deserving of a spot in the Space Corps trilogy, sharing with its prequels your trademark humor, engaging story, wonderfully stickerific character designs, and well-crafted layout and gameplay. Some innovations that I particularly liked was the SNAFU, which I actually wikipedia-ed (Funny!). I liked that it had multiple means of movement: first rockets, then sliding. I adored the contrast of environments you created in the sliding part...their blatant contrast gives the illusion of traveling really far, which was funny because one expects a tremendous amount of friction on impact, but the rocket unexpectedly gets some serious mileage. I also liked the overlapping planetary orbits towards the end: I didn't know one could do that, and the effect was well-suited for the theme.

And the ending. Well, I won't spoil it for anyone here, but that was outrageously funny, and the humor is amplified a hundred fold for LBPC members...

A minor blemish I encountered was the flickering LBPC logo. I know this was beyond your control, and I appreciated all the details and crafting you did to frame that area, but that was a bit distracting...

And suggestions. For some reason, the storyline wasn't as engaging as your previous two. What I loved about your previous levels in the trilogy was the devotion to a cohesive, simple and funny storyline that was complimented with animated scenes and well-developed characters. I didn't get that here. The character design of the admiral was admirable , but he only appeared briefly, and I really couldn't pinpoint his personality the way I could with your other ones. The doctor of course carried over from your first level, and I loved the way you incorporated his evil intentions into the gameplay in both the first and this level. However, I can imagine people playing this level without the first and will not appreciate his character wholly.

Another issue I had with the story was that his visit to the Space Corps was extremely brief and seemed to lack a purpose. Why couldn't he just fight the "impending doom" straight from the moon? And the second launch sequence from the Space Corps was, well, underwhelming. I've seen you done some amazing stuff when it comes to launch sequences--and this seems to be a tradition carried throughout the series--but in this instance, sackboy/girl unclimactically just falls into a shuttle...

Sorry if I'm being nitpicky, but I know what an extremely talented creator you are, and I wanted to do this level justice in hopes of realizing its full potential. I must say that I loved the levels preceding this one a bit more, but this was still an awesome level way above the caliber of even a "good" level on the community moon...But then again, maybe I did this level injustice by playing it with extremely high expectations from your previous levels...

:star::star::star::star::star:, level heart, and I already hearted you!

Trying to strip that doctor of his license,

Awesome level Taffey!

In all honesty, this level was my very favorite to play. I can see where you are coming from (Jeff), because there were parts (like the second shuttle launch where sackboy just sort of falls out) where I felt like corners had been cut (but I guess we all have to cut corners on the PSP due to thermo and the extra limitations). At the same time, I thought that this level actually had much much much much much better gameplay than the previous ones. I felt like the first two were a mash up of fun little challenges, but I desired more platforming gameplay. In this level you started off strong with some simple platforming, and you kept the platforming going throughout the level.

I was actually happy that you didn't keep me in the Space Corps for long, because I feel like I have already been in there enough. I was worried that this level would just be another one spent in the Space Corps, and if that had been the case, I would have been pretty disappointed. Thankfully, you had the Space Corps in the level, which I think is good since it is sort of a staple of this series, but you only had the player spend about 30% to 40% of the time there.

As for the story, I thought that this was the funniest. I didn't feel that there were as many jokes, but the jokes that were there seriously made me laugh out loud. And the end of the level is outstanding (sooo funny!!!).

So... sorry for disagreeing with you Jeff, but I wanted to give my honest opinion. I was actually disappointed that the second level was so much like the first, and I thought that this one was excellent because it was so much different.

Keep up the great work Taffey!

Hi Taffey!
I really like this one!
Nice platforming, nice looks, nice Humor (the end = muahaha), nice length.
There was one area that reminded me of something... hehe i think we both had nearly the same idea (my dream area in Dream Or Reality and your stethoscopes).
Nice one! 5 stars + heart!

You've excelled yourself!

Your previous Space levels were already great, but this one is even better IMHO. It has everything: exploration, platforms, humor, puzzles, even minigames! I can't name a favourite part because there were a lot. I liked exploring the moon, and also that platforming section inside the cave. Then the landing was a welcome suprise, another one of what I'd call your trademark "Wow moments". Usually, I don't like minigame levels but having one inside a proper long level was a welcome addition. And then, the final section in outer space was incredible, plenty of original gameplay: using the planets to traverse space was clever, while the boss battle was epic and hilarious.

There aren't any flaws that I can mention. Congratulations for your best level yet!

5 stars and hearted.

Thanks everyone for the plays and the feedback! Hey, there's no "thanks" button any more... Well, not right now anyway. If/when it comes back I'll be sure to use it.

Some innovations that I particularly liked was the SNAFU, which I actually wikipedia-ed (Funny!).

I also liked the overlapping planetary orbits towards the end: I didn't know one could do that, and the effect was well-suited for the theme. The planets are all front, thick layer objects. The wheels they are attached to alternate between thick back layer and thin middle layer. The thin layer passes freely between any thick layer objects that have been glued or bolted together, and there's your overlap. Convenient!

And the ending. Well, I won't spoil it for anyone here, but that was outrageously funny, and the humor is amplified a hundred fold for LBPC members...Of all the people on this board who I knew would appreciate that joke, that one was especially for you my friend. Think of it as my in-game response to H4H Scorpians.

A minor blemish I encountered was the flickering LBPC logo. I know this was beyond your control, and I appreciated all the details and crafting you did to frame that area, but that was a bit distracting...Yes, that turned out to be something of an annoyance. I think it happens because of the on-screen fire effects, so lesson learned. My only way around the problem was to use a fixed camera and get it framed and locked in as soon as possible so it stops flickering while the player runs by.

With as much time as I spent designing the Admiral, I'm was a bit sad that you only see him for a short period of time in the level. Then again, I'm glad that I only had to sticker him three times - he takes forever! I did develop a personality for him in some additional scenes that never made it into the level. Most of those scenes involve him saying "It's a trap!" just because that makes me laugh. As for the doctor, let's just say that I could have (and may) make an entire level filled with stuff from him. I spent literally days crafting devious ways for him to torture Sackboy but in the end it all came down to the thermo. I saved all my objects and concepts, so if there's a part 4 you can be assured he'll be in it.

Another issue I had with the story was that his visit to the Space Corps was extremely brief and seemed to lack a purpose. Why couldn't he just fight the "impending doom" straight from the moon? And the second launch sequence from the Space Corps was, well, underwhelming. I've seen you done some amazing stuff when it comes to launch sequences--and this seems to be a tradition carried throughout the series--but in this instance, sackboy/girl unclimactically just falls into a shuttle...I thought of having Sackboy help construct a moon base and go through his Space Corps experience there, but I liked the way the SNAFU turned out and went with that instead.

As for the launch, that was largely an editing choice to keep the pace of the level going. I felt the Space Corps bits were slow-ish and wanted to get straight back to the platforming. Also, had I included a more detailed launch I would have had to get rid of the planet sequence. So, in the end I decided that I'd have outer space take the spiritual place of the launch. Like the Flight Surgeon, I had a pretty cool idea for a launch that I will definitely use in the event part 4 takes place.

Sorry if I'm being nitpicky, but I know what an extremely talented creator you are, and I wanted to do this level justice in hopes of realizing its full potential. I must say that I loved the levels preceding this one a bit more, but this was still an awesome level way above the caliber of even a "good" level on the community moon...But then again, maybe I did this level injustice by playing it with extremely high expectations from your previous levels...Apologies not necessary! It's exactly this kind of feedback we all need, and it's great to receive it. As I'm sure I've said before, if all you ever hear is "can't be improved!" then your subsequent levels are guaranteed to be worse. Honest feedback is what it is, and it's also incredibly valuable.

Regardless, I'm glad that you did enjoy the level and laughed at my usual array of jokes. Thanks for taking the time to write up such a detailed review!

Just played all of your Space Corp levels last night and... my word those levels are all absolutely brilliant! O_O The humor is incredible, the scenery is spot on, you've got fun little plays on words, the story successfully carries through from one part in the series to the next, just... just... I love them all! Please oh please make more. Also thank you for the levels.

I thought that this level actually had much much much much much better gameplay than the previous ones. I felt like the first two were a mash up of fun little challenges, but I desired more platforming gameplay. In this level you started off strong with some simple platforming, and you kept the platforming going throughout the level. Thanks Poo! (By the way, have I ever told you that "poo" is my favorite word in the whole world? Just ask my wife. It's fun to say! Poo!) Anyway, you've hit the nail on the head here. My first two levels were exactly what you describe: mash ups of small challenges. I tried to go for a more platformy feel on this level, from My Moon all the way through the solar system sections.

As for the story, I thought that this was the funniest. I didn't feel that there were as many jokes, but the jokes that were there seriously made me laugh out loud. And the end of the level is outstanding (sooo funny!!!).Heh, good to know I've hit your funny bone. I made myself laugh when I came up with the idea, and I had hoped everyone else would think it was funny too.

Look i'm getting rightfully annoyed with you now, you are starting to get on my bad side because once again my psp crashed from your brilliance.

Kidding my psp has never crashed playing a level, but it crashes all the time in create.

How do you keep making good levels soo fast i dont even have one proper level made.

I loved the moon the shaded circle was such a good idea for craters (its my overall favourite sticker an both platforms aswell)

see you soon creator::kz:Glad you liked it, and thanks! I will definitely make more levels, it's just a question of what and when. I'm not taking a break from create mode so much as I simply don't have any ideas right now. Interwebs 2 is a probably not, just because I didn't like any of the Matrix sequels... I suppose I could continue the story and "finish" the first movie, but again I've had no brainstorms there. Space Corps 4 is a maybe. I also have two other concepts rolling around in my head; one of them is too silly and the other isn't silly enough.

Firstly, the name is absolute genius. 5 stars for that!

Comedy gold as usual, loved the SNAFU. Very good Simple platforming but perfectly executed. I think your levels come as the 'complete package' really. As in the everything is well done and not one element is put above the rest.

Whereas my level is pretty much just visuals and gamplay, so if one of these elements isn't upto scratch...the level would just be crap! Your level has a bit of everything, and that ties it all together neatly and gives you a really fun and enjoyable experience. I think I read somewhere that someone didn't enjoy the 'coming back to Space Corps' ride? I thought that was excellent, the way you went through all the different scenery and landed was fantastic. Really liked it.

Great work as always Taffey!

Whereas my level is pretty much just visuals and gamplay, so if one of these elements isn't upto scratch...the level would just be crap! "Just" visuals and gameplay? Well, what visuals and gameplay they are! I think a lot of very bad things would have to happen before one of your levels could be considered crap.... but I know what you mean and I appreciate that.

The level was amazing Taffey. I really like the visuals, and also the the short storyline. The elements in the level were blended good, like lava in the moon. I kind of had doubt when I first saw lava on My Moon, but then you made it work so well, especially in the LBPCentral Logo. I love how you went ahead and changed the method of how to get to My Moon. Dropping down and seeing the Earth fly away was new, so I liked it. Finally, I never knew you had a hatred for Glokenbop (I think). It's funny and yet sad, it's not that annoying, it's... catchy... and ....

how does that rocket work!!?
There's a very long thin-layer bar of dissolve material with a hinge at the far end. The SNAFU is attached to it with a rod, and the rockets are activated with magnetic key on a piece of dissolve that drops onto the bar. At a certain point in the trajectory, the bar and key are dissolved and the SNAFU starts its free-fall.

Wow, this level was the first one I ever downloaded ^^! It was refreshingly different from the story mode levels and, still being new to playing LittleBigPlanet, I had no idea that community moon levels could be so much fun. It sort of inspired me to try create mode actually, cause up till then, create mode sort of scared me with all the gadgets and stuff. Pistons are evil, in my opinion. They scare me still...

Anyway, I loved how it was funny all throughout. The speech bubbles caught my interest from the very beginning and even though I hadn't at the time played your earlier levels, the story was easy to follow and really entertaining. The flight surgeon was my favorite character XD. The part where you dodge his medical instruments was extremely enjoyable in my opinion. It's just so funny and the scary music was so perfect for that part. I liked the end a whole lot as well. The final boss was the best boss ever! Really unexpected, and the way to defeat it was clever and awesome.

I also liked the art style you used for the entire level. Everything is so cartoony and bright and really adds to the mood of the story. Very great work!

Thanks for the feedback Phalaina, and welcome to the boards!

It's always great to hear things like this, especially from people I haven't met before. It's still weird to think that so many people are playing the levels that I created.

It sort of inspired me to try create mode actually, cause up till then, create mode sort of scared me with all the gadgets and stuff. Pistons are evil, in my opinion. They scare me still... Pistons ARE evil! No, actually they aren't, but they can be quite fussy from time to time. A piston is a lot like your neighbor's cat that is friendly and sweet, for example, but every once in a while it will try to eat your face when you reach down to pet it. Just as long as you go slowly and plan things out you should avoid any unnecessary maulings.

Create mode in general can be pretty overwhelming until you get a feel for all the different tools at your disposal. It's just a matter of making a level, getting feedback, learning, and repeating the process over and over.

Do you have any levels published and/or in the works right now?
