2010 HASTAC/MacArthur Foundation Digital Media and Learning Competition
TIMELINE EXTENDED----Application system to open January 15th

To allow applicants more time to develop their initial applications, the Competition timeline has been extended by one week. The online application system will now open and begin accepting applications on January 15th. The due date for preliminary applications has been extended until January 22nd, while resubmitted final first round applications (taking into consideration any public feedback/comments received) will be due by February 15th. Please reference the revised timeline here: http://www.dmlcompetition.net/timeline.php.

The theme of this year's Competition is Reimagining Learning and there are two types of awards: 21st Century Learning Lab Designers and Game Changers.

Aligned with National Lab Day as part of the White House's Educate to Innovate Initiative, the 21st Century Learning Lab Designer awards will range from $30,000-$200,000. Awards will be made for learning environments and digital media-based experiences that allow young people to grapple with social challenges through activities based on the social nature, contexts, and ideas of science, technology, engineering and math.

The Game Changers category?undertaken in cooperation with Sony Computer Entertainment of America (SCEA) and Electronic Arts (EA), Entertainment Software Assocation, and the Information Technology Industry Council?will award amounts ranging from $5,000-$50,000 for creative levels designed with either LittleBigPlanet? or Spore? Galactic Adventures that offer young people engaging game play experiences and that incorporate and leverage principles of science, technology, engineering and math for learning.

Each category will include several Best in Class awards selected by expert judges, as well as a People?s Choice Award selected by the general public. The online application system will open on January 15 and will include three rounds of submissions, with public comment at each stage. Please see http://www.dmlcompetition.net for all details.

All applicants must be at least 18 years of age when the application is submitted; however, personnel working on the project may include students and others under
the age of 18 as long as they are working under the supervision of the primary applicant.

Can we submit the Logic Pack?

If one of you guys (Whichever one of you is 18+) were to enter, maybe the prize could be:
1.Used for LBPCentral.
2.Distributed between those who participated in building it.

Good news - a friend of mine who is of age will be helping me with the level. He'll enter as the leader but I'll be doing the main building aspects - he'd be the idea and feedback guy. I think it works well, since most of the ideas I have for the project now take minimal work. :B

And for the curious, no, the person in question is not a member of LBPC.

So, CCubbage, rtm, mrsupercomputer... want to enter? CC is game...

If we win, they'd want us to make more levels with up to 50k for "development costs"

Keep in mind people that you won't necessarily be winning up to $50,000, you'll be given a grant to spend on a similar project. Which means you'll have to have a purpose in mind for the funds, other than shelling out on a 4 grand TV and a 10 grand gaming computer!

Edit:

There are 10 different categories, where winning submissions can earn up to $50,000 in production / development grants.

So wait, I saw there were prizes for like middle-school age kids but then it later says you have to be 18? I might be looking at the wrong thing...2010-01-14 03:11:00

I'm so confused by the rules... so we get money for "development costs"? Last time I checked, I haven't had to pay for anything when I make levels.2010-01-14 15:47:00

Right, well our costs cannot exceed 50k, but they can certainly fall short of that. Granted, we would do our best to come up with "necessary" costs. Field testing costs money, right? Also, we need to eat... and how else are we going to meet rtm?

Am I right in saying the CLOSING date for entries is the 22nd of January?

a week isn't a whole lot of time to put something together...

That's when the initial proposal/applications are due...

**All applicants must resubmit their applications. Only those who have previously applied are eligible to resubmit.

February 15 Final applications due.

February 22 Public comment closes.

February 23 A group of expert judges will review all applications.

Round Two: Full Application

I don't think your next community project has to be inside LBP.

And maybe your TV breaks and your eyesight is so bad that you can only create using 56" HD TVs.

Dont think they will take the logic pack as you dont learn much form it, only how to use logic in lbp.

Do you think that Gadders invented logic?

There are plenty of real world applications for logical principles and abstract problem solving techniques outside of the world of LBP. So the pack would link in with the engineering aspects of the theme, especially concepts involved in digital electronics, in a very practical way. I don't see how that doesn't fit the bill, I'm guessing that the judges appreciate things such as abstraction and transferable skills, so we should be fine.

Creating logic in LittleBigPlanet encourages the young mind to think critically and analyze a given problem and to derive the "best" possible solution given the tools at hand. It's important to remember that there is no one-right-answer, rather, we encourage the active learning of the creators in Littlebigplanet, which encourages the independent learning that will be expected of them throughout adulthood.

/Educational Lingo

A ton of what I've learned in my Mathematical logic courses have run parallel to the LBP logic solutions that I am asked to make on a daily basis. Particularly when dealing with inversion.

Wow - well good luck guys! I know I learned a lot and since it's got a lot to do with math/science kind of learning I'd say you'd stand a pretty good chance at it too. If you win that would be amazing!2010-01-14 18:26:00

Oh that reminds me, I know some PhD students who are working in educational technology. I'm sure it would be entirely necessary to fly the entire team over to the UK so we can meet them for some advice and then of course a road trip down to MM Towers etc.

There's plenty we can find use for that money for

Never entered. Didn't have anywhere near enough time. How come we only found out about this a week ago ? Surely it must have been announced before then.

There are a lot of misconceptions about this competition.

1) You don't turn in a level right from the get go. You must turn in a proposal of what kind of level you will be making. From there it gets placed on a public forum where it will be judged by the public and they will be able to leave comments on it, i.e. "oh what a great idea," or "maybe you should add this in here instead." After that period of time, the entrants can redo their proposal or even team up with other entrants and once again turn in their proposals for final judging by the official judges. Only previous entrants can do this, no newcomers. If your proposal is chosen, you must then come up with a proof of concept to turn into the board which goes up for public viewing and voting. Once you're chosen, you will receive that grant money you estimated in that proposal.

2) You don't "win" $50,000. If your proposal gets accepted, you have to come up and turn in a proper budget that includes man hours, travel to wherever the awards ceremony is, lodging, etc. Depending if that budget is realistic, then they will award you with money of up to $50,000. If you have that many people working on your project, then yes... $50,000 is possible because its supposedly around $5000 per person. For example, for my project, I allotted $15,000 for myself and my wife who will be working on it, transportation (possible airfare), lodging and meals. If you're working with an institution, it becomes a little different but the $50,000 limit is still in effect.

3) On U.S. residents can enter as individuals. People from outside the country must be aligned with an institution.

Hi everyone. I dropped back in to let you know that if you didn't apply yet, it's not too late. (And thank you, donkey show, for that great explanation!) Due to popular demand, the 2010 HASTAC/MacArthur Foundation Digital Media and Learning Competition has been re-opened to NEW applicants for one more week!

We're looking for creative levels designed with either LittleBigPlanet (or Spore Galactic Adventures) that offer young people engaging game play experiences and that incorporate and leverage principles of science, technology, engineering, and math for learning. Check out the Game Changers (http://www.dmlcompetition.net/game_changers.php) category to learn more.

The application system is open now! (http://www.dmlcompetition.net/application.php)

For more information about this year's Competition, please see http://www.dmlcompetition.net. The first-round application just asks for 300-word description of your idea, so it's very easy to apply.

Please reply to this post if you have questions and I'll do my best to answer. Good luck!

There's still lots to do before the next deadline on April 19, but I'm really excited and nervous at the same time to get this educational level up and running. I wonder if any other LBPC members who signed up got in as well.
