Having troubles trying to pick the best materials, help?

Archive: 6 posts

Hello, I've been lately working on my first level and I've gotten some nice ideas that can at least try to set it apart from other levels out there (I'm thinking along the lines of more than one path to get to the finish with random secrets areas for more points unlocked through puzzles or repeated playthroughs). However my main snag right now in the creativity department is to which material I should use and how to get the right color. I originally started going with stone, but I was not happy with the color scheme, so I started deciding on using wood and it's various brighter colors.

My only problem is that I would love to have the wood colored a certain tint of orange, similar to the africa levels (?) in the main story mode. I haven't even tried touching stickers, but I don't think they would help me unless there was some way that I was unaware of that I can make my own color through a variation of stickers.

Right now the level is progressing using only three different materials of wood so I can distinguish them when making platforms, but any tips on which materials is best or how to get the best color would be appreciated. The level doesn't have an exact theme, but I was thinking of at least three tiers of paths, a top path that is in the clouds, the middle being standard desert, with the bottom being cavern like with stone, but that'll have to come up later in development. Thanks ahead for those who reply!

I don't know much about combining colors, maybe you could google for decorating or something, or pick a bunch of materials you like and experiment with it.

Anyway, in case you don't know yet, you can somewhat mix colors with the partially transparant gradient stickers. And because of the texture, some materials look pretty good with a simple uniform color sticker, like white.

The only way to "change" the color of a material is to apply a sticker on them.
You also cannot really "play" with stickers in order to create color directly with them outside the couple of gradient stickers they give you with the game.

However, it's possible to set a material or white sky somewhere and change its color appearance with lights. Then when you have the desired color, you take a picture of that light up material or sky. That photo then become a sticker you can put wherever you need it.

Thanks everybody for the suggestions, I was unaware about using a picture of lighted colors for materials and using that as a sticker, I'll try to experiment.2010-01-12 03:52:00

In my case, one of the most important things to consider for material picking, is lighting! Different types of materials reflect light differently and make a huge difference. In the case of the story level, I'm pretty sure that they use regular wood but they tweak the global settings. If you want to achieve that orangey look, you have to set the 'day-night' scroll to about dusk. If you place some sample materials and then play with the global settings, you'll see what I'm talking about. Fog, darkness, color correction and all those settings change the way materials look.

Also, try pointing some spotlights (if you're using any) and you'll see a huge change as well. I usually tend to go for materials that have a lot of texture (such as basic metal or wood) because those are the ones that look the best under spotted lighting.

Hope this helps!
