PS3 in glorious 3d

Archive: 21 posts

Okay, so Sony announced in a recent games conference that they're going to give everyone a free update that gives ps3 (no matter what age) the abilty to play in not one, not two, but three dimensions. Along with the small compromise that you've got the David Tennant-like 3d specs and a 3d TV (minimum starting at ?4000 apparently)
So what game are you most looking forward to playing in 3D, what game would you want remade to be 3D compatible and what LBP LEVELS would be even better in 3D?

I'm not buying a tv just to play in 3D, screw that

Really!?
Obviously no-ones really gonna be buying 3D TV's for a long while, the only thing i can see myself watching in 3d is the footy of world cup and movies (avatar: genius by the way).
Gran Turismo 5 in 3D is an irresistable thought for me personally
Can't wait

Unless they'll support the 100 or 120hz TV's somehow. Should be able to get a nice framerate on some of the older games perhaps. But I'm not buying a new TV to use this feature. Mine is about two years old and I paid close to 1000 euro for it.2010-01-11 17:04:00

Whoosh!
I'm not suggesting that we should all buy a 3d tv just for 3d gaming by the way because names like sky will be giving a 3d service this year.
The thing that all the papers over here in snowy England is that if 3d tv's react like hd tv's did then the price will drop like a hippo on a diving board so its looking good

This whole 3d thing's going a bit too far... it isn't even that good :/

Are developers going to be shoving loads of gimmicks into 3d games now without giving any of the features that matter a second thought, like they're doing with movies?

Also i'd imagine it'd be the games themselves that need to be updated to support 3d. I'm pretty sure 3d works by using 2/3 cameras side by side to show depth, that's not usually something that can be done just by updating the ps3.

I do have some 8 year old 3D glasses for the PC. The real deal. The depth perception is awesome but it gave me a headache after five minutes. I bought them but barely used them.2010-01-11 18:27:00

If the glasses have advanced and I should miraculously have too much money in the next few years (by which time 3D capable probably cost as much as a decent TV now) than I would buy one.
Something like Wipeout should be fantastic in 3D, and of course adventure games ala Uncharted. Here is an interesting short interview about this with Housemarque (the makers of SSHD)

No thanks, I don't think 3D will catch on for anything other than cinema use.2010-01-11 19:08:00

I got a pair of fancy(ish) glasses that they give you at vue cinema after I watched avatar. Although they make you look like less of a spanner I am a pretty old skool kinda guy and would love to own a pair of blue red glasses ready for england in the final of the 2010 world cup.
I reckon 3D will be the norm by 2012 ready for the london olympics lol, that's my english view anyway lol

well, after i have bought a ?2000 tv, i will have no money for the ps3 or glasses!

well, putting the joke aside, this would be interesting to see if existing games could be converted and/or updated to work in 3d. also if this affected lbp, this would give us a new idea of layers when making levels
what would happen if the layer glitch, cam out the screen?!

The sony dude said that converting the PS3 to 3D will be as simple as an update so me thinks that games would just have to release patch.
I don't really understand fully how 3D works in the first place but i understand its a trick of the eye with the tv pixels which reflects light off of each other so I don't think that a patch would be too sizeable a task (says joe bloggs).
The thought of having a 3d camera on create mode is one worth thinking about

Sony sound like they know what they're doing with 3d. My Dad has been along to a few showings of 3d stuff and he says motorstorm was very good because it used 'good 3d'.

Good 3d and bad 3d seem to be the tricky things at the moment.

As I understood it good 3d had certain parts of the screen done in 3d effect such as the exhausts the boost flares but bad 3d would be making the whole car 3d and so you'd have your car image on top of your normal hd image of the scenery which is generally what you see in cheap 3d where its just layers of images rather than a full realistic scene (like channel 4's awful attempt which could barely muster even that).

So while it may be a case of just patching the game it's also the challenge of making it look good.

I just hope that too many producers don't go for the gimmicky route.
Oh my god! Roger Federers serve comes out of the screen, woah.
It could be LBP water round2 and people start making games that use new features just for the sake of it.
Although I must say there aren't any games that come to mind that don't have a legitimate reason not to use 3D

Be interesting to see if this pans out this time its not too hard on the wallet to see a 3d movie at the cinema but will people be willing to part with a few thousand for another tv and yet another increase in their premium tv subscriptions especially with the effects of the current recession.

Trouble is those are only good for the old way of doing 3d and seeing void stuff.

What we want as the general public is for two big name brands like LG, Panasonic and even sony themselves to do a little game of chicken where they battle to make the lowest price.
For Christmas I really wanted an I-Phone but forgot about it in the end because ?350 is just too much for a phone especially when you have to buy a new ps3 cuz old one broke but now google are having a go at the phone market and have released a new phone that wipes the I-Phone and even better, knocked of ?20... that's what we want to see in 2010 but instead of knocking off ?20 people will be knocking off ?200 at a time.
It's going to be interesting me thinks

You can already play Avatar in 3D.

Personally I sure ain't buying a TV for this gimmick. Also, it's possible that the PS3 will make 3D possible on all HDTV. It will simply process the image and then shoot the result of what it looks like to the TV. When you look at the TV with the glasses, you recover the 3D effect.

The thing I was wondering as well was there are kind of two types of 3d
the one that comes out of the screen and the one that stays in the screen like the avatar film.
I wonder if the tv would make it full 3d gaming
