Making my own Sackboy doll. Need your opinion.

Archive: 6 posts

I am trying to make my own sackboy doll. I cannot knit (may be I should try learning to knit.... nah), but I am pretty decent at sewing (thanks to boy scouts. I had loads of badges). Hence I am trying to make it out of fabric. However, I ran into a little dilemma, and I like would like to hear your opinion on this matter. Take a look at this photo.

These are just the prototypes made out of felt. I just used random pieces of scrap fabric I have lying around at home, so don't worry too much about the colours. The dilemma I am having is with the mouth. Which one do you looks better, the left one with the glued on mouth or the right one with the stitched mouth? Also, try to take into consideration that the final version will be made using the blue denim fabric at the bottom of the photo - the black colour of the glued on mouth won't stand out as much as on the prototype. Thank you very much.

P.S. Just in case that you are interested, I am using Zelas' (from deviantart) papercraft for sackboy.

the sued mouth looks weird in some sort of way.... also I think their mouths our supposed to be wider.

anyway... out of these two, the one on the left looks better. Looking only at the mouth that is.

The one on the left, definitely.
The right mouth could look good but it should be a bit wider and higher I think.

Very cool to see people making their own sackboys, btw. If I had the patience, I would have a sack-sized army by now.

I make puppets as a hobby and what I do to get the shape of the head/body right for a particular puppet is I take it into adobe illustrator and trace the figure. Then I make my pattern out of that.

I also studied a sackboy doll because I was going to make my own a while ago. The head comes in 3 pieces. there's the front, the back and the top. The top portion is handstitched on to give him that "homemade" sort of look.

Anyway, these are just a few things i've learned in my puppet making adventures.

Concerning what you posted, the one on the left in your picture definitely looks the best. Nice work!

Left deinitely. The right looks a bit too low. And I also think it's really cute when sackboy does his open-mouth smile 2010-01-12 20:50:00
