Sillouetes & Flags

Archive: 16 posts

Ok,so this is my first post outside of "Introductions" so don't hesitate to correct any umm..misuse?(For lack of a better term.)
Though Ill be careful to post things right.

Anyways I have two questions that much to my amazement I didn't see discussed anywhere else.

First of all would anyone mind explaining how it is that people have been making some of the strange effects they have like "Silhouettes" in there levels?
There may be a better term for that but if there is I couldn't even guess it.

More particularly I wanted to know if it's a glitch or just an advance technique.
I've never used glitches but I was hopeful that it was just made with the
Global Lighting Tool Ive even seen a fairly normal level transition into that effect for a boss fight.
Which is more or less how I was hoping to use it.
(Don't want to spoil my level too much. )

Trust me it's not for a lack of trying either,I fiddled with that dang tool so much it's almost surprising I didn't invent anything on the way, myself. lol

Second how exactly is it that some creators have been able to sticker
flags so perfectly?
This sounds like such a noob question but Ive tried everything I could think of to stop them from flailing in the supposed wind..

My second question isn't all that vital but after how long I spent trying I just have to know!

Suppose that's it.Thank you for listening.

1. Global lighningtool>Drag darkness to the max, then change fog colour. You will now have a visible background with a diffrent colour, so there's no problem seeing the ground, and everything you make will apear as silhouettes.

2. Not exacly following what you mean.. But if you mean a sticker on a material with the exact same shape, it is done by stickering the sticker onto something, for example, disvovle. Then making it HUGE, then either use the corner editor or cut out techniques to remove everything besides the sticker shape.

No,there not decorations.
I meant the object you get from playing through the main story mode.
There were a couple versions I think.
Like one was more banner like & I think one was just like a basic rectangle.
But they all hang off of a similar rod that works like any other object.

MM even has said object stickered really well in that one Gardens levels.
(Can't remember which off the top of my head.)
But it's right in that area where you ride that cut-out horse you have to decorate with a tail to pass. (It goes by quick though, might have to walk back to see what I mean.)

I know it's not just MM though Ive seen a handful of community levels do it really well too.

My problem with it is the actual flag part is always blowing in the wind
& even folding in on it's self from time to time which makes it tremendously hard to put stickers on accurately.

Sorry if I didn't clarify enough before.

Thank you! I can't wait to test that out next time I get on.
(A bit late to be playing though, right now.:blush

Ok, so my guess on number 2 was wrong, for what you are looking for do this:

- Go to pause mode.
- Drag out your banner/flag
- It shouldn't move now, so you can sticker it easily.

1. If you turn the darkness to full, and change to the fog color to something other than black. You should get a silhouette, try messing with the fogginess also, to see what effects it makes.

2. If your trying to sticker a flag, try laying it against a block of something, as they can collide against objects. And make sure it's hanging downwards.

Hmmm...Maybe I'm doing something wrong but it didn't seem to work for me..

Although I think I finally figured out how they work.
Even though the poles only take one thick layer the actual flag part of the object creates it's move moments by changing layers & seems to be able to reach any layer.(Thick or thin.)

Though I already tried what warlord_evil had suggest to an extent before too.
But thanks to this realization I have finally made them stop moving.

My technique is still far from perfect though.
I uploaded a picture to show how wonky they lay but at least there still.

(Hope this shows,Ive never done this before)

I know the stickers still don't look great but I wasn't really trying yet.
There mostly there for testing.

In order to make them stop I had to:
1. Place them with the flag part hanging down.
2. Put a three layer thick material to the side.
3. A one layer thick sheet behind them.
4. A strip of thin layer material on the edge of the three layer piece.
5. Then make sure the flags are on layer 2 & readjust them until they snag & stop moving.
Essentially boxing them in for nearly ever direction.

Oh & to both of you BIG THANKS for the help with making the Silhouettes effect. It worked perfectly first try!
Idk why but the one thing that never occurred to me to fiddle with was the darkness setting.Go figure.

@Moon_Slinger: I've spent what seems like hours sometimes trying to get a sticker on a flag just right. I'm really interested in your method but I can't view the pic you uploaded. Try creating an album under your profile and upload it there.2010-01-15 14:42:00

Sorry about that.I think I simply made the album I put it in private.
I re-uploaded it but Im not really sure how to insert it now that they reworked the site.
(Otherwise I would have just edited it into my older post)

So here's a link to the new album, hopefully this time it shows up.

Again I know the flags look kinda wonky but they ARE finally still.
Good luck,it still takes some patience.

Unfortunately, the flag will not stop moving in pause mode.
