Rush's review on Escaping the doctor's cave (Done)!

Archive: 5 posts

All right, This is my first review on LBPC and it will done on iGotFancyPants' Escaping Doctor's Cave
This level starts you off falling down into a cave where a lion's head says "What a fail!" and then says "A level by iGotFancyPants".
Asthetics: 8/10
This stage looks really nice for the most part. It really makes it look like you're in a cave. There are animals carved onto the walls, Carved wooden heads and pottery with sackart on it. The ground is jagged and jaded. Everything is earth colours. The only thing that didn't seem to blend well with the other stuff is the spone colors. The design was nice but the color was abit too deep a green. Lighting is done pretty good as well. It could've been abit darker overall to simulate the darkness of a cave.

Puzzles: 10/10
The puzzle here is very intriguing. Where there are two switches, One you press and a two way switch, then abit higher up, there is a piston attached to a platform, an opening about it and a wall lodged with explosives abit farther away. Pressing the red switch will drop a time bomb on to the platform and the two way switch will move the piston. You stretch the piston all the way out and it will drop the bomb in front of the wall. It took me two bombs to break the wall and open the other door.

Platforming: 7/10
There is plenty of platforming here. Some parts are done really nicely. Others parts aren't as good. The first bit of platforming is just using sponges to swing to high ground to then drop down to the first puzzle. The next platforming section is jumping from platforms moved by pistons and this part is done nicely. Next platforming section done is jumping from an edge to a sponge and swinging to the other edge. The sponge is VERY far away from the edge you jump off of. You really need to hold that X button and the R1 to grab on. But it can be done. Next part is where there is an X that is rotating clockwise, like a windmill and you must time your jump to the X well so you can jump to the platform being extending back and forth because the timing of both the X and platform are not synced to each other. Which can cause some fustration. I would suggest slowing down the rotation speed of the X. Also I found myself jumping onto the X and just going right through it. So I died plenty of times there. There is also a chase scene where you must avoid the coal on the ground while keeping your distance from the ball of burning coal behind you. Your pacing of this part is very inconsistent and you'll find yourself jumping too early. Though it doesn't pose much of a problem. The final platforming scene is where you jump into openings in the backgrounds in order to bypass the walls blocking you. Then jump up edges and bypass another wall. So the platforming is good. But it does have it's problems.

Exploration:
The cave is is very linear, he has arrows come out at times to point you into the right direction.
There is one item to get here. It took me awhile to get to it due to the position where the grabbable material is placed in order to have your sackboy autoplaned into the background.

Length:
Compared to the other stages that have been made, this is short.

Dangers:
This stage has plenty of natural dangers. During the jumps between pistons, one of them has a ceiling above it with spikes that can kill you. Gases at the bottom of big jumps and certain platforming levels. The boulder of coal chasing you. There are also times where you must die in order to progress. You can avoid most of the dangers with alittle planning before you jump.

Problems:
When you meet the Doctor, and you go foward, the gate did not open at all for me. So I looked around for a switch and it still wouldn't open. Next time I pllayed, it opened automatically.
Severity: 10/10
Why? Because you are unable to complete the level now.

Overall: 7.5/10
This stage creates a nice atmosphere, and is definitely a platforming level. I feel the doctor could've been worked more into the plot of this level. Have him mocking the player instead of the wooden heads. What really hurts this stage is the Gate problem I encountered. I hope it's just a problem that will happen with me. So I really hope you give this stage a chance and enjoy it. Thank you.
I will post pictures up soon~

Wow thanks for the top notch review!

I have also noticed the door at the end occasionally being unresponsive so I will look into that. That should be fixed next time I'm on. The door does prevent you from completing the level, but the scoreboard is right on the other side so you aren't missing much.

Is the door opened with a sensor switch?

If so I've had that problem before. It's yet another bug. I don't know what causes it but there's a thread about the same thing happening on the psp version.

The solution I think is to replace the whole setup i.e. new door and new switch. I had this in my Arabian level before I knew it was a bug and ended up having to remove 2 doors completely. They worked fine in create mode but wouldn't work in normal play mode. I tried new switches but that didn't work so I guess replacing the door too would have been the way to go.

If it's not that it could just be a case of the door jamming on something if it's in a tight recess. Can't say because I haven't seen it yet. I just had this with a moving roof section in my new level. I made everything perfectly aligned to the grid but it just kept jamming so I had to take the grid off and move the wall very slightly away. Of course that leaves a tiny gap but it wouldn't work otherwise. STUPID GRID !!!

Yeah, it certainly is a bug. I'm going to be rewiring it all tonight though lol

And the grid definitely bugs me when it comes to placing moving doors or elevators that aren't glass. BOB SAGET!

True but the player doesn't know that there's just a scoreboard. xD2010-01-10 17:10:00
