Time Elevator concept...
Archive: 18 posts
Ok, so I just had a thought for a level based on the concept of time. The idea to traverse time with an elevator. Actually, I had this idea when I played a level where something like this was in existence...but I want to actually put more of a story, and more playability to it (as I remember, at one point the level broke itself, and that made me very mad.) I want to send some sort of message (if any of you have seen Click with Adam Sandler, I have an ending sort of like that in mind, but not quite as somber. More of something to not take technology for granted, etc). The only problem is that I have no clue where to start. Any thoughts, ideas, concepts? Remember to Keep it Simple, Sir, because I'm a pretty bad creator (though I'm about to do the logic tutorials as we speak) I'm up for hearing any ideas...so please, give me your thoughts, your opinions! I'm listening. | 2010-01-10 03:07:00 Author: Ragfell Posts: 729 |
No one? No one has any possible directions to take this, to shape it? It's a different idea, but LBP is a different game. Honestly, comment however you desire. | 2010-01-10 15:42:00 Author: Ragfell Posts: 729 |
Alright...I started scenery for the very beginning...it looks pretty good for only being able to put in about 30 minutes...but at least it's done for the moment... | 2010-01-17 07:47:00 Author: Ragfell Posts: 729 |
i think (hope) u mean travel trough history/time. but in that case: -start with the moment the earth was created like the big bang -then go to like the first real human (dont spend to much time on this) -then the old egypt -the romans -midd ages -the ages when there where alot of colonies etc. -World war I -World war II -Now -make up some stuff for the time wich must still come -then show that all we did for the earth etc. was for nothing because we leave the earth and go to a other planet. hope u can use it! maybe u ment something totally different | 2010-01-18 17:50:00 Author: Smelling-Cowboy Posts: 668 |
I'm unsure I can fit all of that into one level, or even two! The big bang may be too far back...the egyptians and romans, maybe (although I'm partial to greek history, myself...). Definitely through the Renaissance (which sorta includes colonial times), probably World War I (since NO ONE makes games outta WWI, just WWII >.<)...and then getting catapulted into the future...because the original deal is that the elevator breaks down. The main character goes through all these historical deals in an effort to get it repaired...but I still don't know the exact dialogue, etc. | 2010-01-18 18:23:00 Author: Ragfell Posts: 729 |
Yeh i was looking for a good word to explain that time but indeed: renaissance but how are u gonne make the doors of the elevator in those old times? maybe you could do that the "floors" have all different doors. for example: greek style - wooden door with around it columns WWI - wooden door with bullet holes in it. | 2010-01-20 17:50:00 Author: Smelling-Cowboy Posts: 668 |
Have you played Chrono Trigger for PSX? Minus the physical elevator, it's pretty much exactly what you describe. The elevator part makes me think of Bill & Ted's excellent adventure, or even the followup stories to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Anyways if you haven't played chrono trigger, it works like this: - 65 million BC (dinosaurs & cavemen) - 12,000 BC (dark ages) - 600 AD (middle ages) - 1000 AD (present) - 1999 AD (apocalypse/changing of the world) - 2300 AD (future) - end of time (very small area - a hub for travelling between time periods) I think 4-5 periods of time are plenty for a single level. You could always do a separate short level for each time period. Spread out your time periods so that each one is thematic and covers a distinct era in time. Honestly, ditch the WWI/WWII stuff... everyone does it and frankly if I never have to play another war themed level with tanks, paintguns, and green army men it will be too soon. If I were to design something like this I would go with: - prehistoric (caves type theme) - ancient greece (think greek mythology/caesar) - middle ages (victorian) - present (city?) - future (high tech) | 2010-01-20 20:10:00 Author: Thegide Posts: 1465 |
I still have a slight urge to do WWI...as you say, it is overdone, but I never see it done well. Victorian is definitely a possibility...its between that and Renaissance...XD but as for the rest, I have to agree! Any other opinions? | 2010-01-20 21:34:00 Author: Ragfell Posts: 729 |
If you want anymore ideas. I am going off of what Thegide said about thematic. Each level could express a different emotion, characteristic, or maybe a set of morals that act as a guide to the progression of time. If you want to bring in any religious concepts as well, you could have similar stories that happened in the bible and transpose selctive stories throughout the different time periods. Contemplative... Contemplative. | 2010-01-22 10:06:00 Author: eternal_renegade Posts: 35 |
I don't wish to bring religion into this - personal preference. The only thing I feel I could actually rip from the Bible would be King Solomon's Mines, since that was actually later an adventure book (starring Alan Quartermain, played by Sean Connery in "The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen"). Depending on what era, I may or may not choose to use information about the goths (the french barbarian tribes) or the Celts...I just don't have as much time as I wish to dev these levels! hahaha For the first level, I think I'm at 40% thermo, and its only the opening structure...maybe I'm thinking too much into it, or maybe there's some structures I need to delete. But I think the first level is gonna have to be a visual lightshow more than a level, to set the storyline...and I still have to think of how the elevator gets fixed in these prehistoric eras. So, I still need a few more ideas, at least to help me come up with a few more. Please? | 2010-01-23 05:28:00 Author: Ragfell Posts: 729 |

Dude...I honestly wish i could...-contemplates youtubing it- | 2010-01-25 01:08:00 Author: Ragfell Posts: 729 |
I'm not meaning to bump...but t is an update. I currently have a small part of the background scenery done, and it looks semi-realistic...the area is "In the Beginning, the Ancients Were"...or something. It's like the beginning of the world, wtih flooding, but there's a tribe you have to help to get a gem to power elevator... now I need to think of either a platformer, puzzle, or water challenge to go with it all...hooboy...and then the logic. | 2010-01-26 04:58:00 Author: Ragfell Posts: 729 |
I hope you have the History Kit! And I feel this would be awesome. I feel it will need close attention and detail for it to work properly and well though. | 2010-01-26 17:38:00 Author: kirbyman62 Posts: 1893 |
what you should do; Is in a space station and say something bad has happened so you have to go fix it, what the cool thing is is that the scenery is almost exactly the same... ((Actually i might do that...)) | 2010-01-26 17:52:00 Author: Kern Posts: 5078 |
I have the history kit - there isn't a lot of stuff I've had to use from it yet...Monster Kit background (thanks to Luos for the idea...but I'm not ripping straight off of it). Attention to detail is fine and dandy, and i'll be sure to at least moderately do so - but if one becomes so entangled in what actually happened, there would be a lot less of artistic value. Keep in mind, though, that I AM going to make it work. Next, i just need to figure out how to make GOOD lightning... | 2010-01-26 22:04:00 Author: Ragfell Posts: 729 |
Ok...I can actually show you guys some progress...sorry about the poor quality of the pictures, I had to use my laptop's camera for these... Now I just have to figure out how to add pictures. Hang on! XD EDIT: figured it out! The second area's scenery! http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=12251 The final area's scenery! http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=12250 This is looking to be more than I had thought it was going to be! Thanks for all your support, guys! | 2010-01-31 15:57:00 Author: Ragfell Posts: 729 |
Thanks to everyone who contacted me about helping me with this project! (or at least, level one....) after a long debate, I have arrived at an answer: SatansPit is now my partner for this level....thanks again to everyone who showed interest! As I speak, we're redoing some logic and attempting to make the level feel as if its more alive...its no easy feat, but we'll do our best! Wish us luck in the OC contest! | 2010-02-09 16:43:00 Author: Ragfell Posts: 729 |
