Which DLC packs worth buying?

Archive: 17 posts

So as most of you know by now, I'm back creating after a long absence.

I'm always on the lookout for useful stickers. Most of my levels tend to have a realistic artistic direction, and I frequently find myself using stickers in unconventional ways for design. I noticed recently, playing some community levels, that some of these packs might be worth investing in for the stickers alone.

Was looking for some recommendations on which packs if anything to buy. Here are the ones I do not own:

Watchmen Pack
Vera Bee
History Pack
Artists Sticker Pack - Jon Burgerman
2000AD
Monsters COSTUME pack (not monster level kit)
Egyptian Minipack
Rag Doll Kung-Fu

I've played a number of levels recently that use the ICO pack stickers, so that was on my list to try, as well as possibly the egyptian pack. The two artists packs I'm probably not interested in since the stickers look childish/cartoonish and I don't have any real use for that kind of thing.

Here's my opinion....

Watchmen Pack-Great variety of costumes, symbols, and stickers.
Vera Bee
History PackStunning variety, stickers, objects, and sounds. A must-bye I think.
Artists Sticker Pack - Jon Burgerman
ICO & Shadow of the Colossus-The only pack with bonus sound effects! =D
2000AD
Monsters-It really depends on what you plan on making, but still. It's a minipack. lol.
Egyptian Minipack
Rag Doll Kung-Fu

The John Burgermann pack is of wacky animals, useless in my opinion except for cartoony levels. The Vera Bee has more variety, with people, animals, and very good vegetation.

You will definitely need the Monsters Pack, all the different decorations are so useful, as well as the background, music, and sounds. It wont disappoint.2010-01-09 02:10:00

You'll probably get tons of advice from other people, but of the ones you listed, I have to say the one that's the most UNDER-RATED are the Rag Doll Kung-Fu stickers.

Now I know why they're under-rated, there's absolutely no reason to simply use the stickers as what they are for the most part, with some exceptions (the vase, etc).

However, where they ARE incredibly useful is simply due to the fact they are "realistically shaded" - IE, they are stickers of 3d objects and well rendered.

It's because of this that you can use parts of the stickers to accomplish great shading and textures on ALOT of things. Use the fabric on the arms to give something a well shaded fabric texture for example. I just recently used the vase sticker - which is of course convex and its shading shows it - to create a very smart looking breastplate for a character.

For "clever stickering", it has some great uses.

Conversely, I think the most OVERRATED one is the Jon Burgerman pack. It's over-rated for pretty much the same reason the Rag Doll Kung-Fu pack is UNDERRATED - people simply looking at the sticker and saying - oh, yeah, I could use that sticker as what it is (Jon Burgerman's Tree Sticker, for example).

That being said ... in all honesty, you would never want to really use that sticker, for the most part. You'd just be making flat, cartoony looking trees that are identical to the trees in a million other levels.

When it comes to stickers, the stickers that are often the most valuable are the ones with tons of detail, as you can use just portions of them to create some amazing looking things.

If there's one "simple, cartoony" pack that actually is worth getting, it would be Vera Bee ... but simply because her stuff is so pleasing, that honestly as long as it fits in the level - it still looks great.

Finally, the History Pack is something I simply could not live without. The background is excellent, the music is excellent, the decorations are excellent. It simply exudes excellence.

Going on your criteria for realism I could only suggest the History pack

I have all the packs but that's just because I can't help myself, I'm a collector and hoarder even though I've never used 90% of them and probably never will .

That's for the same reason you have, they are just too cartoony. Even though the history pack has a lot of cartoony ones too there is a lot of variety in there and they are the ones I use more than any others.

I've been saying for months that Mm should give us some more realistic looking stickers but it looks like that's never going to happen so I'm afraid we're stuck with buying 500+ stickers to maybe find 1 or 2 useful ones.

The dlc packs i would recommend would be the verabee because it has some really good scenery stickers that look realistic and great. Also the history pack wold be good if you are looking to make some great realistic architecture structures. The monsters for the scary looking stickers and decorations. Both the history and monsters pack come with some really good sounds and backgrounds too. If you are unsure about what dlc to buy, you should just type it in the level search engine because there are some levels that people have made to just showcase the dlc availible. I was in a predictament like yours and all i did was look up levels for the dlc i was unsure about and it helped me alot. Hope this helps you!2010-01-09 02:45:00

Hmm thanks for all the input so far. While I couldn't care less about costumes, I think I'll have to start with the ICO pack since it has sound objects.

@Jagrevi - Shadings you say? Sold. That's something I could definitely use more of. I'm looking for stickers than can be exploited for their patterns moreso than anything. Things that have regular patterns that can be blown up to make new materials entirely are things I like.

On a side note: Did you know you can make a pair of khaki shorts using one of the monster dino body stickers and the pirate treasure map "x" as a drawstring? Perfect shading for the inner thigh and some dirt stains.

@Damaz - great idea. I'll start looking for levels tomorrow. When you say backgrounds, what do you mean exactly? For example, the "background" category stickers in the popit is completely useless, since they are screenshots of Mm story levels. I also don't do much of that fake 2D stickered backdrop. If anything I use the natural environment backgrounds, natural material patterns, or sticker materials with solid colors or large patterns, and/or use cutting and pressing techniques to achieve my effects.

@mistervista - any particular examples in the history pack you can tease me with?

@Endless echo. I bought the monster construction kit. I did not buy the costume pack which comes with stickers. I don't envision myself building many horror themed levels, but if I do, I think the monster kit has some great stickers that will take care of the business.

I already bought the monster kit (with the playable level). I have not purchased the *other* pack with the costumes and extra stickers
The Monsters costume pack doesn't come with any stickers.

Really? The PSN store is lying to me then. Says it comes with all the costumes and some new stickers, which surprised me given the monster kit is packed full of goodies already.2010-01-09 05:20:00

Then again, I have never bought a whole costume kit that was part of a larger pack.

I never hear of stickers with the costumes though, I really think they don't come with stickers. You could ask someone else just to be safe.

If you are a creator, then go with the Monsters Pack. It includes many different materials.2010-01-09 05:35:00

Here are the ones you should buy and why:

Vera Bee
There's alot of good foliage stickers in there. Alot of things the default stickers collection is actually lacking.

History Pack
Lots of stuff in there. Background, materials, sticker, music. You shouldn't think too much before getting this one.

ICO & Shadow of the Colossus
This one is interesting because it gives you a sound effect pack.

Monsters
Lots of stuff in there again. Background, materials, stickers, music. Just take it.

Killzone costume pack came with Killzone stickers. God of War costumes came with Olympus stickers. I just purchased the ICO/Shadow of the Colossus costume pack which came with stickers and a sound object.

No stickers with individual costumes, but the packs that have 4 costumes frequently come with stickers.

Think I will try the history pack next. Thanks for the input guys.

Yes, you should get hold of the History Pack if funds allow - it's worth the money for the music track alone.

Sorry, I'm talking about the costumes that are separate from the bigger kits. Such as Monsters, History, Metal Gear Solid, and Pirates of the Caribbean.
