Advice on digital cameras? $200-400 or so range?

Archive: 6 posts

Hey all,

Another selfish thread I'm interested in getting a new digital camera. I have been far out of the loop as far as new P&S cameras are concerned and have always figured I'd go for a dslr, but if the P&S for the value are actually good enough I might consider it.

I am not interested in something I can shove in my pocket wherever I go, I want something I can take crisp pictures with outdoors or indoors and that gives me total control. I don't care about the marketing spiel settings, I care about having direct control over the aperture, shutter speed, manual color balance, good memory card options, etc.

So looking for bang for buck here

(thanks again to anyone following the other thread, in the end I figured there wasn't enough allure to me to the PSP, the camera seems like a far better investment)

You might struggle to find something with full manual control at the lower end of your budget, even at the higher end it could be pushing it.

I actually work in a camera store while I'm at Uni but not all the models we have over here are the same in the US so I'm not sure if I'd be much help!

The Canon S90, and G10/11 are pretty much all about manual control and quality pictures. No novelty features or anything like that. May be a little above your budget though, I'm not sure what the prices are like over there.

http://www.dcresource.com/ is one of the best digital camera internet resources around, IMO. They have unbiased reviews, a buyers guide, a decent forums section, FAQ, and this page: http://www.dcresource.com/reviews/cameraList.php lets you query their entire database on your terms, then click through to specs and reviews for each.

Hope this helps!

Nikon or Canon you really can't go wrong with in the SLR market. Point and shoot maybe lean towards Canon. ..though I have not kept up with the latest point and shoot offerings from either brand.

I recommend going to a local pro photo store and see what makes the most sense in your hands. By that.. I mean if the controls fit and work the way your hands and brain want to work. You end up doing more with a camera that works more intuatively for you rather than fumbling around in a way that seems backwards to your brain.

I currently use 2 Nikon D3 bodies and have 2 Nikon D2hs bodies for backups, but those are total pro bodies and cost a mint. ...be very afraid! I am quite a freak when it comes to camera gear!

Here is a quickie search I did on B&H photo sorta within your price range (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/search?ci=6222&N=4294538181+4291315846+4291570227+4293918168)

Each of these contains a decent kit lens, but kit lenses can be less sharp and not as fast (i.e larger aperture) than a pro lens. That being said they are still much better than a point and shoot and allow you total control if you are wanting to shoot manually.

You can also sometimes find good buys on used camera bodies. As the new models come out the older ones get traded in.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Seeing as there is already a thread on cameras.

I'm looking for a camcorder that's pretty good for an average price. Any model recommendations?
