Underrated Gems

Archive: 43 posts

Are there any games out there that you feel are underrated, or maybe they just weren't very popular?

Tell us about any game you think might be worth mention, maybe we can spark off some nostalgia here

----------------------

First off i think Jet Set Radio Future is incredibly underrated.
I've probably mentioned it here before, the amount of personality in that game, the fluid gameplay, the completely surreal soundtrack. When i first played i almost felt like i had culture shock, i was just completly immersed!
Despite what a great game this was it didn't even have it's own disc, you could only find it on an Xbox demo disc at least as far as i'm aware.

Secondly there's Vexx.
It might be slightly more well known but i've recently found out that it really isn't popular among critics.
Again i was completly immersed by this game. The worlds are FULL of imagination and it has a great sense of scale. The sheer size of some of the worlds just wow'd me from the second i saw them, and exploring them was even better!.
The difficulty too was great. It's a really difficult game which can make it frustrating but it also becomes addictive and really rewarding.
This has been criticised for being unoriginal, with a lot of similarities to the Rare games and Mario 64, but the style and presentation is incredibly well done

Conker's Bad Fur Day was sposed to be good. I haven't played it yet, but I just bought it, and am going to log at least one playthrough on it.

The original smash bros. had prolly the best stage in the bunch, the classic mario stage. that was great. what was better than smashing your friends on head with a home-run bat?

I could also say, Final Fantasy Tactics Advance. The story is simple and charming enough, but it was very enjoyable to play!

Sonic Adventure 2 Battle...though it was a port, still some of the best platforming i've ever seen.

Tales of Symphonia and the Abyss, and probably other Tales of games that I've never had the chance to play...

I'm being entirely serious when I say that Tales of the abyss changed my outlook on the meaning of life and what matters... O_o Odd that a niche JRPG with abd voice acting changed my life >_>

Yeah... *sigh* I need Tales of Vesperia/ Graces... GAH Stupid Namco/ stupid Americans not buying the games >_<

... and... um... hm... :/

Tales of Symphonia was great!

Lloyd was one of my favorite characters of all time, him and Kratos...I wish they had made it to Brawl. Woulda been great to use sword rain with lloyd or call down a thunder blade with kratos...

Odama was great. it was a military strategy + pinball hybrid. great game.

shadow the hedgehog was good too.

I always thought Final Fantasy VIII was underrated. In the grand scheme of things, it's a Final Fantasy game, so you know, it's not like people don't know what it is, but when compared to other FF games many people place it on the lower echelon of the series. I personally think it's one of the best games of the series, if not one of the best PSone RPGs.2010-01-11 02:16:00

I'd put FF8 as one of my favorite games ever.

I'm gonna try to think of the weird games I spent way too many hours on...

Dynamite Cop for arcade/Dreamcast... I played a ton of this with friends. Fun stuff!

Er.. I'll have to keep thinking.

Pokemon Silver. That was one of my all-time favorites. It packed so much life into that one cartridge. Wow. I still wonder at it. I think I maxed the timer on that one.2010-01-11 04:17:00

Wolfenstein ET for pc methinks. It was free (still is) and is to date my favorite shooter; great team gameplay with classes, spending more time specializing in a class unlocked extra abilities and it had very memorable voice overs ('Protect the fuel depot!', 'The tank is past the first barricade!&apos.

Also Sacrifice and Messiah made by Shiny. Two pc games with unique gameplay mechanics that no-one has widely used to this day (Prototype's consume is the closest I've found to Messiah's possession and Brutal legend basically IS sacrifice right down to the fan founatins or w/e they are).

And someone mentioned Hogs of war which i'm glade about because it was amazing .

I'm saying Rez, for either Dreamcast or PS2 (though it's now on XBox arcade in high def--I'm so jealous!). Also Jet Set Radio Future for XBox. What a great art style and some of the wickedest music ever in a game. Oh, and Blinx the Time Sweeper! The coolest game that nobody ever played!2010-01-13 20:28:00

Perfect Dark for the N64.
How is this underrated? It's widely regarded as one of the N64 games.

I used to think a lot of popular games were underrated
I probably used to think that Zelda and Spyro were unpopular just because noone i knew talked about them.

I remember Blinx!
I've always liked games with time manipulation and that game had the lot of it.
Don't think i played the full game though, think it was just a demo on that Jet Set Radio disc

The first two I agree with wholeheartedly. Rez was amazing, as was JSRF. Jet Grind Radio was pretty rad too. I never played Blinx though. Xbox and Platformers never really seemed a good combo to me.

I used to play that all the time!!! I remember spending loads of time trying to make an uber chao. If you don't know what a chao is it's a little pet that looks like this:http://media.giantbomb.com/uploads/0/867/267182-chao_large.png

I never played Sonic Adventures 2, but I loved the first on Sega Dreamcast. You brought me back with that picture of chaos. All I would ever do is collect the little animals so I can change the color of my teeny chao. I loved pocketing the memory card and playing with it. Until, the memory card died. :-(2010-01-14 22:11:00

Klonoa was another game i was going to mention if i didn't already.
Everyone always says Klonoa 2 though, i thought the first was MUCH better. It was that game that made me want to be a game developer!

Ape Escape was great too. Although it took me like 2 months to learn how to move because I'd never used the analog before xD

Yeah, I've actually heard equally rave reviews about Klonoa. I have to find it. Another one I would add is Metal Gear Solid: VR Missions PSone. Loved it. I'm a huge MGS fan.2010-01-14 22:54:00

I must say...

Lair.

now, before you laugh and point and shout, the controls weren't that bad - you just had to understand them. having the different dragons was cool (though I could never really tell a difference in speed/handling) and the fact that factor five even dev'd us up some analog controls for the noobs that couldn't handle it. and the musical score (all by John Debney, who can be found on facebook and itunes) was absolutely fantastic.

SA2B was prolly 60% of my childhood as well...

I'm going with UN Squadron (Area 88 outside of the US). My grandfather played this game when he had cancer and it was given to me when he passed. I played the game all the time when I was growing up and still haven't finished it! It's an extremely difficult but rewarding game. I still play it from time to time...

I just remembered another another one from my youth

Ogre Battle 64 for the, of course, Nintendo 64.

It was a strategy game, so it may not have had as good gameplay as the PC RTSs, but it worked well enough methinks.

It also had an epic story. Really awesome. Class Warfare, duty of the leaders, war between man and ogre, that sorta thing.

It also has six different endings, and multiple paths. So various cutscenes are VERY different depending on your path in the story.

Like in one playthrough, you may have to fight the king at the end of the raid on the Capital. In another, Prince Yumil will just kill him for you.

And then, if you play the game really horribly, after you fight the goddess of the underworld, there's another level where you have to fight against your Zenobian friends who see you'll just replace the old king, and you must kill them ^-^. Then if you play good, that whole level just doesn't happen >_>.

Anyway... yeah, really good story ;-;. Underrated Gem without a doubt

I am not sure 'Rez' would be considered 'underrated.' It was a critical darling yet largely unplayed; which is not the same as underrated. For underrated I would have to say Monster Hunter (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZOA6bWVlmvU). It is a very niche(and Japanese) title, yet one that offers one of the best online console experiences I have encountered since Phanstasy Star Online.2010-01-24 16:53:00

How about Ristar for the sega genesis? I only first discovered it a year or two ago, it's actually a very fun game with great graphics and music.

You basically play as this shooting star thing and your arms can extend to grab things and enemies that you can throw/manipulate... er.. hard to explain.
