I read everything and I like this idea, so basically every month a creator is crowned. The only thing I'm not really sure about is the time that is given to create an eligible level but I understand why the deadlines are so short, I just think the quality of the levels submitted will suffer.2010-01-08 04:51:00

I saw this:

Fret not though, as whilst the judges are working their way through the previous month's entries, we will announce the theme for the month ahead, which you can begin working on right away!

It appears my new level is well timed.... I think I can have this done by the end of the month. Shame I can't ruin the surprise.

Given that a large number of crowns have been awarded for things other than fantastic levels, I never really considered them special. Just, unique.

Well from personal experience I can say that a lot of my levels have been created within a month, and as someone who obsesses over tiny details I'd say that's probably enough time to create something of decent quality

Also, in order for the level to win it doesn't necessarily have to make peoples heads explode with awesomeness, it just has to be better than all the other entries, which seeing as everyone has the same amount of time, is pretty fair

But you have had loads of experience cranking them out. Can I ask, how much time do you spend creating a level? Do you sit 4 hours every evening, or a few hours spread over the week, or...?

EDIT: By the way, LBPC is the about the only game site that isn't caught by our webfilter, so I wouldn't mind if you quoted a bit more of the competition. I understand it's a water-related thing?

Monthly Level Theme
Create Contest

The Beginning

Well it's been a long time coming, more and more regularly we see requests on the forum for more chances to win the rather elusive Rare Prize Crown and with the budding Creator Curators among us especially requesting that there are more competitions based around one of LittleBigPlanet's fundamental elements...
Level Creation!

And with that we bring you the Monthly Level Theme Create Contest.

At the beginning of each month we will announce a specific theme for levels, although generally these themes will certainly allow Creators to be pretty flexible and allow them to have plenty of input into their own Creations, simply put the theme is a starting point and what the rest of the level contains is totally upto you, the Creator.

Then at the end of each month, the month's theme will end and the judges will begin working their way through the entries during the following month.

Fret not though, as whilst the judges are working their way through the previous month's entries, we will announce the theme for the month ahead, which you can begin working on right away!

Meaning that there will always be a theme active to keep you occupied whilst the judges are busy working their way through the numerous entries for the previous month.

So the big question that's probably on everyone's minds right now...
Just what exactly is the first theme for the Monthly Level Create Contest?

Well I can tell you now that the very first theme will be...

WATER!!!!!!!

Otherwise known as the no-brainer theme of the month.

Water has been recently discovered on LittleBigPlanet and I'm sure that by now, you will have seen Sack Sparrow's water adventures which ended with him defeating the Kraken and saving the LittleBigPlanet from this dangerous creature.

Sack Sparrow's adventures certainly don't end there though!
He still has the rest of the Seven Seas to explore and adventure on.
Infact that's the great thing about LittleBigPlanet, it can contain so much more than the Seven Seas, meaning that Sack Sparrow can potentially have an endless number of adventures on the LittleBigPlanet high seas!

However first he's going to need your help...
Since Water is a recent discovery in LittleBigPlanet, he's going to need your help with flooding the LittleBigPlanet with Water.

So there with have our first theme...
Water!

We're looking for Creators to use Water to its best effect.
The level itself can be based on any theme or setting otherwise, all it must contain is some Water that is used during gameplay.

How much Water is totally upto you.
Whilst using Water throughout your level is definitely a big bonus, I'm sure that Sack Sparrow and your other fellow LittleBigPlanetians certainly won't complain if they can get out of the water to dry off and stretch their legs occassionally too.

After all, whilst Water was the main gameplay element of the Pirates of the Caribbean Level Kit, we certainly didn't see Sack Sparrow submerged underwater for the entire duration of the story, so feel free to balance out Water gameplay with some classic platforming.

Other than the main theme, all we're looking for is genuinely awesome levels.

I know what makes an awesome level and you know what makes an awesome level.

As long as it looks good, is well designed and most importantly is fun to play...
It will score well with not only the judges but also the rest of your LittleBigPlanet community.

However since this is an official contest with a Rare Prize Crown at stake, I'm going to have to throw a few rules at you, don't worry though there's certainly not too many that will take away from the fun of Creating.

The rules for the Monthly Level Theme Contest are relatively simple.

Rules

1. The contest is open to ALL regions.

2. This contest is for the original LittleBigPlanet on Playstation 3, so please do not create and publish levels on LittleBigPlanet PSP for the purpose of entering this contest.

3. The level must relate to the theme of the month in someway, in this case the theme is Water and therefore the level simply must contain Water as a gameplay element at some point within the level.

4. The month's entries must be published before the 1st day of the following month. Meaning that the deadline for this month's theme of Water is January 31st.

5. Entries for each theme must be brand new published levels. We will not accept previously published levels that were originally published before the announcement of the month's theme. Any levels found to have been published before the announcement will be disqualifed.

6. Each player may only submit one level per month for the contest, any player found to have published more than one level will be disqualified for that particular month's contest.

7. There is only a single Prize Crown to be awarded to the winner chosen by the judges for each theme, which will be awarded to the PSN that the level is published under. You may use Online Create if you wish, however bear in mind that there's only a single prize on offer and it will be awarded to the publisher of the level.

8. At the end of each month, the month's theme will end and judging will begin. The judges consist of myself and a number of other community members who have been selected especially for the task of judging these levels. Whilst we will endeavour to pick the level that we feel is best amongst the entries, you may not always agree, however the judges' decision is ultimately final.

Further details on how to submit levels will be provided soon.
However the contest has well and truly begun now, so feel free to begin creating those Water-themed levels and we'll provide you with details on how to publish and submit levels within the next week.

That's it!
Hope those few rules aren't too much for you to work with.
Basically we're looking for brand new levels to be published under the given theme for the month and we'll be awarding a Prize Crown to the winner of the theme for each month.
I'm sure you'll agree that we can't be any fairer than that.

Any questions, feel free to send a PM my way and I'll answer any questions as best as I can.

All that's left to say is good luck.
Try not to drown too many poor Sackboy's whilst working on your creations.
And I speak for myself and the other judges when I say that we look forward to playing all your great Water themed level submissions in a month's time.

there you go.

Ok so this worries me:

5. Entries for each theme must be brand new published levels. We will not accept previously published levels that were originally published before the announcement of the month's theme. Any levels found to have been published before the announcement will be disqualifed.

I started working on my new level a week ago. I publish locked to my moon (and make backups to my hard drive) while I design. If the announcement was made after my initial backup publication, I'm worried that I could be disqualified solely for practicing safe backups, despite the fact that the public has never seen or played my unfinished level.

I guess the question is how are they judging this? Are they checking publishing logs server side or is it more a question of if someone reports that the level is old or a staff member recognizes it from an earlier date?

If you publish on an new section to your planet it will be fine as the locked version is just a safe backup.2010-01-08 14:33:00

It will be okay. In all honesty with water being so popular at the minute this month probably isn't going to be as strict seeing as it's going to be pretty much impossible to be able to tell when people really did start their level.

With the next themes they will be a bit more random and therefore it will be much harder for people to start before the start date.

Sounds like an awesome idea with montly contests. But ugh seeing that you can online create the levels, I already envision the endless messages on help getting it.

As much as I like all these new chances to get the crown, even better that this a contest for one and not to make the greatest level known to man (which it seems everyone thinks thats how you get crowns, I still get hate mails saying "I don't deserve it") but all the contests since march (at least for the US, I don't know if this happened to EU) have been just 1 crown per contest, which can be quite a turn off for some people.

It's nice to see a regular series opening up strictly related to level creation. Since the ratings system is so flawed, its nice to know that talented creators can still be rewarded for their work.

There are so many authors here only LBPC I would like to see crowned for their work, but have always assumed that this was impossible given the rarity of crowns. Perhaps this isn't so...

Monthly seems appropriate. Given the hundreds of thousands of creators out there, giving out 12 crowns per year for level design doesn't exactly make them a commodity, but fitting enough that I think we can expect a large number of those to come here to LBPC.

Heh, you just missed the Sackies. They gave away some crowns around Christmas, so it's not quite as rare already. Still, cool to have a regular opportunity. I have this year-old pirate level concept gathering dust on my moon, perhaps I should give it a shot...2010-01-09 00:46:00

Full details on how to publish and submit your level for this month's theme has now been announced:
http://forums.littlebigworkshop.com/lbp/board/message?board.id=pod&thread.id=118773

Anyone who's entered a LittleBigPlanet level creation contest before should know the drill.

In this case simply put the term "LBW1" into your level's name and publish.

Sorry I've been a bit quiet over here but I've been a bit busy organising things and getting the contest up and running on the LittleBigWorkshop.
Glad to see jackofcourse has been keeping everyone updated though.

Hmm, I was planning on it, but after my experience with the fairytale competition I think I'm done making levels for contests. Felt a little too much like doing homework, ya know? 2010-01-14 04:28:00

Just a reminder that if you wish to submit a level for this competition it must be published by the end of January and have LBW1 in the title! 2010-01-29 22:00:00

Well any hopes I had of entering this contest have been well and truly squashed by the YLOD about 1 hour ago.

I just hope I can get back in action in time for the next one.
