CometChat Load Issues

Our server load is spiking way too high at the moment, and it seems to be due to CometChat. I'm going to disable it for now and see how our server does, and if that's the problem, then we'll take steps to fix it. Thanks for bearing with us.

EDIT: I have some good news, some bad news, and some more good news:

Good News #1: CometChat was the source of our problems, which means the site should not have any more issues from here on out.

Bad News: We will not be re-enabling CometChat.

Good News #2: A new, very similar but much improved chat software has been announced (it's called ArrowChat (http://www.arrowchat.com/) - by a customer of CometChat who discovered he could do better), and after much discussion with the developer about how it handles server loads and things like that, I have purchased two licenses. Hm... I was wondering all along if it was cometchat, but didn't know enough about whatever was going wrong to say something. If you all recall, the problems started just after we got cometchat. Makes sense, right?

You know, I'm not actually sure, but it seems as if ArrowChat will be much more feature-packed and well-written. There's some awesome coding magic that goes on behind the scenes that allows it to be much lighter on the server without sacrificing functionality, and everything else I've seen screams consistent and high-quality, so I would not be surprised.

Plus, there's this preview image (http://www.arrowchat.com/images/preview3.gif) on the ArrowChat site that suggests ArrowChat will be supporting pop-out chatrooms. That in and of itself is already above and beyond what CometChat offers. 		2010-01-08 01:29:00

No, not currently. December was a great month ad-wise, and we had a couple of big donations too, so we were able to cover it without a problem.		2010-01-08 01:45:00

Glad to see the problems are being solved, cometchat never achieved "non buggy state" either way but it was a very cool addition to the site so I hope arrowchat is an improvement.

Possibly an issue with your browser ignoring comment tags. In all modern browsers, comment tags are supposed to inform the browser to ignore any content between them. I'm not sure why it's not working out that way. I'll just remove the code altogether.		2010-01-08 05:56:00

I too hope the new program will have better chat rooms. It would be great to have some chat rooms to talk with everyone here. I don't mean user created private chats, just like a general chat room I can click on and start talking to people about LBP.2010-01-08 06:57:00

Methinks some people forgot this existed...

So yeah, me and my sneaky ways have found out that ArrowChat is currently set for February 19th, having been delayed two weeks so it's better...

So... will we have the applications part of the chatbar? XD. Or just other stuff?

The pop out windows look like they'll be cool too- especially since it looks like GROUP CHAT THAT DOESN'T SUCK!

... yeah. Anywho, um... yeah.

I unno what applications there would be really... it'd be nice if somehow someone made one related to LBP and we got that here... but that's not too likely.

Well, in theory, you can do ANYTHING on it. I don't sue facebook (big gasp!), but it's like that in which you can download "apps". Obviously, CC would be the one to make these apps available to us. But people can make apps like games and whatever as long as they can program it. Then they will be upload it to the store on the arrowchat themesite, where other people who own arrowchat can purchase apps and themes for their websites, either for a fee or for free.

Obviously, only site owners have access to the store, so it is up to CC what apps we'll have.		2010-01-29 21:34:00

If anyone makes a LittleBigPlanet app, it will probably be me before anyone else. LBPC is the biggest LBP fansite on the internet, and it's due to the size of our community and the generosity of its members that we can even afford things like this. I don't think anyone else using Arrowchat will be even remotely involved in the LBP community.		2010-01-29 22:14:00

Considering the fact that there are only 3 LBP fansites (fansites so not LBW) that are in the least bit active, and neither of the other two seem to have this, I'd say that's a probability.

However, I don't know how likely this would be, but i posted in the Sackpad thread about the possibility of a Sackpad app for here. That'd be cool if we could incorporate that into LBPC somehow.

Then, when the Online "Sackbook" finally comes out, if you could somehow negotiate with MM about making an app for LBPC that is linked to said "Sackbook". That would be beyond awesome if possible.

Just thought i would mention it's been delayed


In order to pack even more features and quality into the first release of ArrowChat, we regretfully are going to delay the release date by two weeks. Our new anticipated launch date is February 19th, 2010. We understand a lot of people are anxious to get their hands on ArrowChat, but this will ultimately make a better product in the end.

One of the main reasons for this delay is the applications feature. This is a complex feature, and we need more time to make developing applications easier for anyone who wishes to make apps for the store.

We know everyone will be extremely impressed with the quality of ArrowChat, and we know it will be worth the extra wait. The ArrowChat Team highly expects to release on or before February 19th without further delay. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

The good news is that we've released a new screenshot which can be viewed on our homepage screenshot section.

We're looking into it. There's no way I can make promises until I get to play with applications myself, but if it works the way I think it works then incorporating a Sackpad app should be pretty easy.		2010-02-05 00:18:00

Wouldn't it be simpler, and cause zero additional load on the server, to just agree to use a specific IRC (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_Relay_Chat) channel on one of the many free IRC networks (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Internet_Relay_Chat_networks) that are out there? It's a well established protocol which has existed for over 15 years, and pretty much all of the multi-protocol IM clients (e.g. Pidgin (http://www.pidgin.im/)) that are available on every platform already have IRC support.2010-03-04 17:45:00

Well, it has been purchased already at a pre-order discount. Also, there should be an option to disable the chat if you so desire. Honestly, when it was around, chat was awesome. We had cometchat, and it was excellent,but due to some bad programming, it caused site-wide problems. We can only hope arrowchat is better.2010-03-04 18:05:00

About the sack app. Some websites create special versions of the website to fit on your ipod. it may have a different format but they have all the same features.plus they work better then the regular websites.2010-03-04 19:39:00

You can't have it's not out yet. But speaking of that they said earlier today that it's very soon...

The most recent date they mentioned was march 2nd. Clearly they've gone over the deadline just an ickle bit. My guess is that they all randomly exploded and were unable to finish making it.

I think not. Preorders have ended, yes, but there wasn't an official announcement and stuff, so probably not yet. Plus no one posted in that topic saying they got it, so I'll assume not.

The reason it changed to Purchase is because it is so close you can't preorder anymore. Right now they're just finishing up documentation and stuff. I honestly will be suprsied if it isn't released this weekend- or at least 0.1.

Not all features will be in 0.1, but several things like chatrooms will be added in like a week or so until the "full" release.		2010-03-12 23:00:00
