Working on an avatar level

Archive: 29 posts

hi, i am making an avatar level, (the film, not the stupid cartoon) and need some help
i have been following the cave tutorial here and found it really useful, used water and turned it into a cavern-type thing, now i need to make a jungle scene, but i don't know how i will do it, i also need a model of one of those helicopter things, thanks!

btw: used the logic pack to make the flickering lights too!, made three switches differently, to make them better by changing speeds and adding more key switches

Does anyone know what those are called? I want to make one badly

The funny thing though is they're based off real helicopters.

Im already making this, so is coxy =/ (from a different perspective)

My advise, watch your thermo, its proven pretty costly to make the environment of Avatar

thats a good idea! but i don't know how you will make the floor "glow" apart from lights but i don't know if that would work, and thats only for night scenes?

when i get home, i will get back on lbp and do more "work" for the level, its about 60% complete?

I hope you're making the giant spaceship at the beginning. That was so... awesome! :eek:2010-01-10 15:41:00

nope, i'm making the level as a sequel to the film, its gonna be called Avatar 2 - The Awakening, if you search it now, you will find my teaser level, don't play it, its rubbish!2010-01-10 19:41:00

While I was watching the movie(today!) I was writing mental notes on stuff I thought would make a good lbp level. The more I watched the more I realized it would take up WAY too much thermo to get remotely the same effect the movie had. What a wonderful movie o_o2010-01-10 22:27:00

If you're still interested, the craft is an AT-99 Scorpion Gunship. There is also a smaller model based on the same design which is used more for transport than for combat; the SA-2 Samson Tiltrotor.

I really hope a good Avatar level will be made, it will be a nice compliment to the film! Good luck with this project.

thanks, i hope it will actually be any good in the first place!

btw, i have been testing out lighting and have first tested lights ABOVE, if i can get them to get brighter when you get closer to the switches below i will decide.
but then i thought, what would happen if you shined lights up UNDER through glass? but to do that, i may have to dismantle my level. i will this idea on a blank level later tonight. if its any good, i will happily upload it!

Well you probably could get non-foggy lights and have them shine on the ground. That way you couldn't see the beam of light but the light would show on the ground. You could use the P.T.D. for it, maybe.

Oh. Goodluck on the level, btw.

In my avatar level the glowing ground effect is made by a series of foggy LED with proximity switches set to speed hidden behind the ground.2010-01-11 23:23:00

Im glad to hear people are making avatar levels, i searched on lbp the other day to see if there were any but only found costume tutorials lol. Can anyone please leave there psn's and the name of their avatar levels if you have onel. ID LOVE TO SEE EM!!

Tip: You could have a bit in the level where you have to fly on one of those horse animal thingys with the wings where you have to attach your hair! That would be good

thats another good idea! but i don't know how i will do that!

will test out that light thing soon, but can't seem to make it shine on the floor, how close does the light have to be, as i don't want the "player" to see it

also, about that PTD, i thought they were called proximity switches, but a good way to shorten it!

Try making the lights as bright as you can so that the colour of the light will shine on the floor but the player wont see the actual light. The brighter the further you can put the light out of view.2010-01-12 21:34:00

no the PTD uses a system of proximity switches and pistons to make a device that follows the player throughout the level2010-01-12 22:20:00

3 whole layers of lights and P.T.D.s everywhere would use alot of uneeded thermo. I'd say have a section(like in that part where they are on the trees with all the floating seeds) and have that section with one walkable layer and the other layers just scenic.

Oh, sorry I wasn't very clear on the P.T.D. I just assumed you knew what it was. If you need it or need an explanation just search P.T.D. on LBP. There should be a tutorial level or two floating around somewhere.

well, to update the project, i used the lbp central logos and made a short cutscene at the beginning, its not the best but it will do

also, now on the part where the helicopter thing crashes, used the layer glitch to add some hovering islands in the backround but i think the camera might not pick them up, LOL

been editing this lvl every night to get it finished, its about 80% complete? but every time i come up with a new idea, it takes longer to get it finished.

might put a 'home tree' or a RDA base where the copter crashes. your ideas?

well i can finally say that the level is completed and online now. although i think i rushed the end and i also need to place more checkpoints.

i may edit the level soon and tell you when its changed

but like i said. the level is up and playable, and the checkpoints are also the infinite ones but i think it only works in one player, and maybe two. if you have 3 other mates please test it with 4
