Project Natal: Holiday Season, 2010

Archive: 20 posts

First off, no Xbox hate to be posted in this thread.

Next year in the Holiday season [Christmas obviously] will see the launch of Project Natal. Hopefully it gets an original name for the official release. I'm gonna save up and hope it isn't more than the console itself.

Video released with announcement (http://www.joystiq.com/2010/01/06/microsoft-says-project-natal-coming-holiday-season-2010/)

To be honest, I'm not that excited about Natal. I'm still happy with my good old controller. It gives me reliable results and tactile feedback. That said, I still remain open minded about Natal and I have thought of it's potential uses. A role playing game in which you can actually ask the NPC's questions would be great, but I can't help but see the NPC's responding with "What was that? I couldn't understand you?" Such interactions are great ideas, but like the Milo demonstration, they tend to fail outside of very specific and controlled interactions.

I hope I'm wrong though and that this thing ushers in some new and creative gameplay ideas.

My thoughts of this have been an entirely negative ever since i first heard of the concept - not that i didn't think it through though

For me there's just something strange about games based entirely around flailing your arms around and shouting at the tv. I've seen the demonstrations... those people looked like idiots.

The wii was ok, it stuck mostly to simple movements and actually had buttons, and if people saw you jumping around your living room they'd see the wiimote in your hand as opposed to a discreet little camera

Another problem is space. Most people don't have enough space for a lot of the features i've seen for Natal.
During the demonstrations those people had entire stages or huge advert-esque living rooms and they were standing miles back from the tv.
I had this problem with the eyetoy games but luckily just shaking my body from side to side was enough to win most of the minigames on those

I'll see how it turns out anyway.
The universal opinion of it has plummeted though, i reckon it'll be mostly hype as with most MS things.

I'm looking forward to seeing how it actually turns out, what the games are, how well it reads your motion etc. I loved the wii at first, then sharply realised that waving my arms around in front of the TV is not the way to relax like I general use games for.

And waiting for the price of course

I'm more interested in this in a technical sense than I am in any gaming sense.

Sorry MS, it's just too cool for games.

Im pretty sure this is a lot more advanced than eyetoy with that milo stuff.

I cant wait till this comes out to see people make youtube videos swearing at that milo kid and seeing how he takes it XD
I might look into this depending how much it is $ wise

The thing I liked about the Wii was sure you COULD flail around - but even wii sports can be played well sitting down with the minimal of movement. It was a choice.2010-01-08 00:29:00

Achievement: Make Milo commit suicide.

I saw the Milo demonstration and it's pretty blatantly a fabrication.

Either the events were incredibly controlled or Lionhead has created the most advanced AI ever which experts have strived for for years, and created a neural system that'll run through an xbox processor.

It's easy to see which is more probable

Well, consider the AI fable 2 was supposed to have versus the AI it actually has.

Lionhead did make black and white, an awesome game if you ask me.

It is likely that it responds to set inputs, and the demo probably covers most of them.

It is still technologically interesting though, but I dont think I willl get much gaming from it.

I hated the eyetoy.

That's all i expect really, just a limited amount of ways you can interact with him.
That stuff about it sensing your emotion i'm not so sure about. Last time i checked voice recognition was still nowhere near that reliable.

I'm suprised noone ever comments on the issue of space.
Unless everyone here has a huge living room and it's just me that's never had enough space then it's pretty hard to ignore.
Notice how much space and movement is required, not to mention the YELLING at the tv
Not to mention you need an incredibly well bonded and enthusiastic family as the preview suggests!

Overall given the average Xbox player everyone will give up quickly.
I'd like to see the fluid transition from being all friendly with Milo to blowing someones head off in GoW xD

It's too bad Milo isn't actually going to be released. But I'm sure the technology will get used.

The thing I like the most is just standing infront of the camera and telling it to turn on and goto your avatar.

It was just demo software. Like all the other things in the videos. But it isn't 100%, they may develop the software and make a game out of it.2010-01-08 01:38:00

I'm actually really intrigued by it... if my 360 actually gets fixed by the time it comes out (3rd red ring....) I may actually buy one. If they can make FPS's work with it in a manner that doesn't feel like a rail shooter for Parkinson's patients (Medal of Honor Heroes... AGH), I'm definitely down for it.2010-01-09 23:16:00
